Got my DLux 8 about four weeks ago. Took it to Alaska to supplement my wildlife kit. It was awesome! 20% of my best shots came from it. Bears way too close for the wildlife kit were captured beautifully. Image quality is fine. Is it like my X2D, of course not. Is it good enough for 11x17 prints on any screen? Absolutely! Is it a slightly modernized LX100ii? It’s close. I had one of those. Sold it. I won’t be selling the DLux 8. Unlike its predecessor, this camera is a joy to use with its ergonomics, Leica menu and fotos app, not to mention image quality. All in all, my first true EDC (aside from my phone). And I have tried a lot of potential EDC cameras.

I just returned from a trip to Singapore and took my D-Lux 8. It performed admirably, taking beautiful images and short video clips. The image quality is next level when compared to my iPhone 15 pro max. The compact size of the the camera made it easy to take almost everywhere.

Hi There, Thanks for the video. Just letting you know that i have owned the D-Lux Type 109 for five years and then upgraded to the D-Lux 7 again for five years and yes i will upgrade to the D-Lux 8 I use my D-Lux 7 for hiking and city/weekend breaks as well as annual holidays. I own a few cameras (Digital and Film) however the compact camera is the one that i use the most. I use a Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 5 to keep my D-Lux 7 protected and use the optional grip which is expensive but worth it. I am sure that you will love yours too...best wishes and love to you and yours ❤

What you're describing is close to my favorite EDC kit, my Q2 monchrom and Lumix LX100m2 (now discontinued). If/when my LX100m2 gave up the ghost, I'd replace it with the D-Lux 8 in heartbeat. I'm holding off for now only because the improved video functionality and improved button layout and menu system offered by D-Lux 8 isn't sufficient reason for me to upgrade.

Had the D-Lux 7, sold it for the GR3x. After reviewing the images taken with the D-Lux 7 and remembering its versatility for street, I just ordered the D-Lux 8 for travel and EDC. It won’t replace my Sony A7Cr or A7Rv, but those are for projects, and usually stay home for EDC. The GR3x? Hmm, let’s see if I’ll miss it.

I've used a Lumix LX3 for years, liked it so much I bought a second one. I now have a Leica X2 and the images just are just beautiful. They just Pop. I'm looking forward to a Leica Q3 in the future. Yes, I'm now sold on Leica.

I understand that the menus and controls are unique, and maybe the color science, but I feel like my Panasonic LX100 II is so close that I have no desire to upgrade. It’s not a bargain-basement alternative, though. Even the LX100 II still demands up to $900 on the used market. More testament to what great cameras the LXs and D-Luxes are.

Love your videos. But not sure about this one. Vs the previous DLUX? Same sensor. Same lens. Is the scaled down Q bod what does it? Otherwise you would have considered the previous camera (unless the processor is from the Q).

While I have a decent phone for taking pictures (iPhone 15), I still enjoy PS cameras. I have a Panasonic ZS-7 (25-300mm FF equiv) which made it a great travel camera and EDC. While not a PS, I recently got an Olympus PEN E-PL3 which is not much larger and use TTArtisan 18mm pancake lens. Both make taking pictures fun.

Enjoyed your video and connected with your views. Over the years I have used the LX series of Lumix cameras, finishing with the LX100 which I finally wore out. My fun photography is travel and the LX100 was an incredibly powerful tool and I have even had images published which were taken on it when it was all I had to hand. I have a collection of 'serious' cameras but found that the LX100 is, to me, the best camera I have ever owned and used. Of course a large part of its secret was the Leica lens. The camera is not longer made so I was delighted to see that Leica have decided to update and 'Leicaise' the camera with the controls and menu system close to my Leica Q3, which is a great camera but not nearly as easy to use as would be a DLux8. My camera store is contacting me soon, I hope, to advise that my DLux8 is ready for me to collect.

I've always liked having a compact camera for the times that I don't want to carry larger equipment and multiple lenses. The D-Lux 8 looks like an intriguing camera for anyone that want to have a Leica without the cost of the higher end models. It would be the only Leica that I would consider getting. But for now, I'll stick with Canon G series cameras. I am currently using a G5X Mark II.

I have the Leica SL2-S and M8 bought used and the Q3 brand New but at a higher than MSRP because the newer models like the D-Lux 8 and SL3 are either preorder or backordered. My local camera store is excellent and I got the Nikon Z6III on the first Day Shipping. Love the camera. Problem with Leica which I love their products are they are a little too slow to ship. I could of bought an SL3 for $8000 and up from a dealer in Hong Kong but I think it is way overpriced in my opinion. I do have the Z8 & Z9 which do 8K but they are bigger than the Q3. I run all my cameras on a dummy battery and only use the camera battery if the power bank is drained. The portability of the D-Lux 8, Q3, Fuji X100VI, OM Systems TG-7 etc. and size plus the simplicity of use are great for a do all everything. The bigger cameras are for other options. ZV-1M2, RX100 VA, Q3 are the ones I grab most of the time and one of them are always with me. I have been watching your Nikon 1 V1 videos and have the V3 & J5 on dummy batteries plus 4 camera batteries for each. All of the lenses, Chargers, Batteries, Accessories plus the J5 & V3 fit in a LowePro BP 130 and weigh 10lbs. My favorite lens is the 6.7-13mm (18-35) Full Frame. I also use the 70-300mm (189-810) Full Frame. I love them all. Photos and Videos and it is a great time now to be in the camera world today because of innovation, options and there are really no bad cameras. Just the waiting in the mail for them. My Q3 Think Tank Speed Changer V3 with everything only weighs 4lbs. When just having the camera and dummy battery in my pocket is much easier. Just have enough sd storage capacity and You are set. They improved the things that needed to be improved. Viewfinder, screen, usb c, memory card, menues and buttons. And left the sensor and lens as they were. I think its and excelent option. I have had the dlux 109 and the dlux 7, and I plan to buy this one

I absolutely loved the first gen Lumix LX100. There really isn't anything quite like the LX100 / D-Lux package. The lens and sensor combo are now a bit older, but they are still a great match. Good enough for digital media and most prints. Regarding value... considering it's a Leica, and is almost 2x the cost of an older used LX100 II. But the Leica is new, and with quality of life updates makes this the dream LX100. Even against a top tier option like the Fujifilm X100VI, the Leica will still have advantages in its focal range and will still have a higher resolution of image at full zoom compared to the Fuji's crop of its 40mp sensor. Image quality is going to be less and less of a concern in the coming years thanks to the advent of neural nets / AI post-processing. Your images from this camera will last a lifetime and then some. It's more about finding a tool that you connect with. I'm personally fine lugging an APS-C ILC body around with me along with a diminutive F2 lens or an assortment of lenses up to a heavy telephoto manual lens. I prefer the grip and flexibility of such a setup. However, for others, especially those who might just want a single camera solution, or who have large full-frame or medium format kits, the LX100 could be ideal for travel and as an EDC.

I have the 1st Gen LX-100. Leica should have put a bit more into this camera, IMO the AF system & better sensor (not necessarily bigger). The lens is great and the MP is fine . But like you said the small improvements and new menu system makes this camera the best of the 24-75 FAST 1.7-2.8 P&S made. Unless you go fixed lens no zoom camera has this type of lens for it's size.

@@superstringsbro missed opportunity for sure. It looks to be a success from a sale perspective, so maybe Leica will continue on this path and be a bit more innovative next round. As much as I'd want one, for myself personally it makes more sense to hold onto my Fujifilm X-E3 as a second body as I have lenses for it along with my main kit.

I can say from experience, the X-T line has the best of everything Fuji offers and weight/size wise is still very portable and easy to handle. I run two Fujis, an X-H1 and an X-E3. The X-E3 still gets a ton of use as it is very portable and I can cram it into any pouch without a thought. I do use larger lenses on both, and I take the X-H1 out to commercial gigs, events, and nighttime shooting. I'm not in a rush to move to the 40mp sensor, as I just don't need the resolution right now. Would be nice for cropping, but will demand more performance out of the lens.

I enjoyed your video because I very recently visited a Leica dealer in Washington, DC, (the only camera store with walking distance of my Capitol Hill hotel) to buy a CFexpress card, and it was like walking into a Mercedes dealership. I was extremely impressed by the cameras and lenses. Unfortunately, they were all out of my price range, as are most Mercedes cars.

My doubt is that having two compact Leica cameras with some wind the sensor gets a dot of dust due using the zoom. For this reason this compact cameras has to being send to clean them either the factory or a Leica dealer ...they can only being desembled at Leica. This always happen when you have wind in the area were you are shooting.

I just order the D-Lux 8 from my local Leica store.I alreay have the D-Lux7 but the interface is hard to understand. With the new camera it is just like the Leica Q interface now I don't have to call the Leica store for setting my camera over the phone again! Leigh I like your BW files. I will start doing the same just Like I did in High school over 55 years ago in Graphic Art class.

The major issue with those deluxe/lx cameras is the dust in the zoom . the dust block the zoom motor, make it unusable at last. Its a really common issue, just check at the second hand market.

I have the d-lux 8 on preorder to partner my Q3. The almost identical button layout/ menu system will make switching between the two a piece of cake. And yes, I don’t expect the image quality to match the 28mm Sumilux / 60MP Backside Illuminated full frame sensor of the Q3.

Same question. I have a Q3 and a Fuji X100VI. The Q3 is my everyday camera that I always pick up first if I think I'm going somewhere that will be good for street. . The Fuji is smaller and the one that I take everywhere I go if I don't have the Q3. It would be nice not to switch menus, ect..., though.

thank you for the great review! people keep saying Lumix has a same sensor and lens but I wonder whether the color science (or I should just say the color of the jpeg / DNG to jepg) would be the same as well. I know the retouch could do the work but hey at least I am not capable of doing it and I won’t try to do it when I just bring a compact camera with a small sensor to a scene to capture some of the moments.

Nice video. I am wondering whether to get this camera. I indulge in landscape photography through fairly easy day hikes and tend to use a Q2 attached to my rucksack shoulder strap with a PD capture clip. I’d have to trade the Q2 in to get the D-Lux 8 Do you think the D-Lux 8 would be used in many situations that you currently use your Q2? I’d probably switch to my M11 for high quality landscape work.

The de Lux Is a great little cameras I have had a type 109 for many years at 12 megapixel it still delivers beautiful quality pictures my only problem with the camera is the dirt on the sensor that you get regularly with the In-N-Out motion of a zoom lens. It is nearly impossible to clean on your own and requires you to send the camera in for servicing this can get expensive I don’t live in a dusty environment but this camera will pick up dirt quite easily something to consider as the average cleaning here in Canada will run you about $150. If you like it and of course the Panasonic equivalent could address this issue it would be a great Camera

As you said, this seems to be a very versatile if not superlative bit of kit. How was the battery life in your experience? I like that if could service as either a bridge for those wanting to step away from just using a smart phone, or for someone who might already be in the Leica ecosystem looking for a simpler everyday carry option. Formerly I used a Sony RX100 V but haven't had that for nearly five years, but looking to find a something similar again - maybe Sony has na new RX1R coming out?!

I always wanted to try her little sister the Panny 100LX but don’t have the coins. I use a EPL2 as a daily carry instead. I love B/W jpegs but prefer RAW if doing anything serious. My favorite compact camera is the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mk II. I bought it many years ago when I needed a camera that would fit in my pocket. I have nothing against Leicas (I have a digital and film M), but I don't see myself wanting the D-LUX.

I had the D-Lux 7, launched in November 2014 and identical to the Panasonic Lumix LX 100. Unfortunately, the Leica D-Lux 8 is disappointing compared to the D-Lux 7. Me would have expected more technical progress, but the innovations are hardly worth mentioning. Instead of real improvements, it seems as if a few steps have been taken backwards. Less good Viewfinder. 10 year old technology? Why? Too bad, I was hoping for a real upgrade! And I don't see the point in paying €600 more for it. You'd be better off looking for a Lumix 100 II. It can do the same. The only plus point would be the new “Leica Like” menu.

Still on the fence...can you explain the difference between a traditional 4/3 senso and a micro 4/3 sensor? Photos are wonderful and this looks like a winner but I'm not sold just yet.

I got the D-Lux 7 a few years ago and it has become my go-to travel camera. I can tuck it into my smallest camera bags and still have room to spare for other things like wallet, passport, keys, sunglasses, etc. It takes great photos and works great for landscape, architecture, and street shots. With the pared-down button layout on this iteration, I'm curious how easy the on-screen controls are to adjust, like focus and drive modes. And is the focus point selection on the touchscreen responsive? Sometimes on my D-Lux 7, it takes multiple tries to get it to register that I'm trying to move the focus point. My only other wish from this line is that it was just a little bit wider at the wide end. 24mm-equivalent is pretty good, but I think I'd readily sacrifice some length at the long end if it meant they could make the wide end go out to about 20mm-equivalent.

The original Panasonic LX100 had a big problem: dust sucked through the lens and landing on the sensor, rendering the camera all but useless. The Leica DLux8 has the very same lens. Have they corrected the issue?

Hi, thanks for your overview of the Lux8. I've one problem. The camera is set as I want it but after power off some of the settings revert to default. eg. DNG reverts to DNG/JPG. I'd be grateful for your help.

Hola, Leigh. I have been a fan of Panasonic cameras since the LX3. My last Panasonic from this model series was the LX100, which I still have but cannot use. The issue is dust on the sensor. I was wondering if you can say anything about the potential of the lens sucking in dust into the sensor with this Leica version of the camera. Have you heard of this issue, and do you think the Leica D Lux8 will eventually succumb to the same fate as my LX100?

the 1/2000 max shutter speed and $1.5 price tag are why i won't be getting this. But this is headed in the right direction. Where's the lumix version and can it please hit at least 1/4000, plz

My Q3 is my daily driver. This is a great camera but it would cause relationship issues between the Q3 and me. Sadly, I won’t get a D Lux…………yet.

Hi Leigh, I’m torn between the Sony RX100 VII and this D-LUX 8, what are your thoughts on their differences? On the one hand, I think the Sony would probably make the best, slip-in-pocket always available camera (more so than the Leica) and thus probably best travel/hiking camera esp. with its 24-200 lens. But if I wanted seriously high quality images for a wedding (as a guest) or street photography, then the Leica is the one I’d take. May be I need both?

@@LeighAndRaymondI’ve decided for the Fuji X100 VI instead of the D-Lux 8, because the Leica is basically an f/3.4-5.6 FF equivalent lens which means sacrificing shallow depth of field. Looking at most people’s images, everything’s in focus unless you’re up close to your subject, whereas the Fuji allows pretty decent background blur. Additionally, the Fuji’s 40MP APS-C sensor can take 70mm FF equivalent shots by cropping in post and still give a 17MP image, which is the same as the Leica. So all I’d be giving up is the Leica’s wide end, but that’s okay.

I had the same question and went for the Sony. I am very happy with that capable little machine. And there is a huge price difference because the Sony is a bit older. After all you pay a lot of money for the red dot. My biggest concern was that the D-Lux 8 would made me even more long for that Q3... because it wouldn't feel like "a real Leica" and more like a pimped Panasonic. The picture quality of the Sony is outstandig; the Focus is much better than on my X-H2 and you can easily slip it into the pocket of your jeans. Either way, you don't choose wrong with any of them.

The Leica colors only exist in the jpegs, in RAW you have to create the colors you want in postproduction

I bought the D-Lux 7, and the shutter speed dial goes to 1/4000th. The D-Lux 8 only shows 1/2000th, yet the content providers on RU-vid are claiming the D-Lux 8 shutter tops out at 1/4000th. Who has the right answer? And why might Leica make this downgrade change?

Just a rebadged Panasonic LX100 ii introduces in 2018. Same sensor, same controls, etc. And at a MUCH lower cost.

we need a much more in depth review of this camera. This seemed hurried!! And why would we believe you if you haven't owned it for at least 3 months or so. And you really do need to go into specs. I expected much more to be honest.

The Leica D-Lux 8 is made by Panasonic. Leica and Panasonic have a long-standing partnership in which they collaborate on the design and manufacturing of certain camera models.

How do you charge the battery in the Leica D-lux 8? I haven't been able to find any charger for it other than one that charges the battery while it is in the camera.

If the camera takes the same battery as the D-Lux 7, you could use the discontinued but still available Nitecore Leica BP-DC15-E Charger. It is available at the website of Leica Camera San Francisco. This Nitecore charger shows a lot of details about the charging on its screen. This model is also called a Nitecore UL 109.
