The transition of myth of Persephone entering the Underworld voluntarily to having to abducted and traumatized to enter reflects the demonization of the Underworld from a place of healing and rest in the time of the earlier myths where a person could enter without fear to learn the secrets of the Darkness to a scary place that people avoided and required them to be drawn to it in extremis. From voluntarily NDE during initations to karmic induced brushes with death to those who needed the Underworld's wisdom and were too afraid or ignorant to seek it.

Hi Janet! Here's my take on the Pandora myth. To me, the myth of Pandora's Box, represents the demonizing of female sexuality. Box is closely related to "pu$$y" or "v@gina" in our modern slang, and I don't think the mis-translation from “pithos” a jar, to "box" was a mistake. Pithos, the jar represented the blessings and fertility of the womb, and the "box" was the vagina, from which all blessings of abundance, love, peace could flow. However, patriarchy reworked the myth (mythic inversion), so instead of blessings, all evils would flow from the box (the female vagina… female sexuality), as soon as she opened it. So, it is a metaphor for maiden innocence and the blossoming of her sexuality as a source of evil and corruption for mankind (and temptation), for which all humanity is punished. Instead of seeing female sexuality as the life-giving creative aspect of the divine feminine, it was twisted into something evil, deviant, shameful, and monstrous, something that should be feared instead of celebrated, as it unleashes all the horrors of the world upon humanity. For me, the reclaiming of the myth from a Goddess, feminine perspective, is the reclaiming of our vaginas and sexuality as sacred, bestowing life-giving energy, creative flow, fertility, and abundance, both in our personal lives as we reclaim our sexuality, and for the world as we reclaim the Goddess. So, to me, her "curiosity" and the "box" has a much deeper meaning, and how our sexual awakening as young women is often seen as dangerous to "mankind". Further Interpretation of the Myth: Hurwit (1995) says that the myth of Pandora represents the beautiful figure of dread, something for which men can find no device or remedy. The quintessential woman was created to beguile men with her beauty and uncontrollable sexuality, to introduce falsehood and treachery and disobedience into their lives. Her task was to let loose all the evils upon the world while trapping hope, unavailable to mortal men. Scholars commonly claim the myth (and Hesiod himself) is misogynistic, especially when Pandora is seen as the analytic blueprint for the Judeo-Christian figure of Eve. Both figures are the original human women; both of them are the agents that set the events of the Fall of Man in motion; both are depicted as temptresses that aim to seduce Man, lead him astray from the divine trail. This perspective, when expanded upon in popular culture across history, lead to women being treated as inferior beings that serve only the sinister purpose of seducing man, distracting him from the righteous path of moral and spiritual enlightenment (that was the normal before the Fall). Pandora's Box, in patriarchal mythology, was the container of all evils, unleashed on mankind by the greatest evil of all - the first woman. The classical legend of Pandora's Box is thus one of the most extreme examples of patriarchal "mythic inversion". The Pandora myth lies at the very heart of our cultural self-definition. The phrase ‘Pandora’s box’ is commonly used to denote any form of multiple/uncontrolled disaster, continually reinscribing, at least at the unconscious level, the idea of femininity - and of female sexuality in particular - as alluring and desirable, but also dangerous, irrational, uncontrolled and chaotic, the source of all the world’s ills. In a way, she is cast in the role as the ultimate femme fatale.

Wow, I love this video so much. The story of Persephone's abduction was the first Greek myth that fascinated me and drew me into the entire world of Greek mythology as a kid. I remember reading about her kidnapping and thinking that there was something darkly romantic it -- something about Hades' desire for her felt hot in some way. But as I got older, I realized that that particular version of the story both attracted me AND repelled me because I did not like Persephone's lack of agency in it. I became ashamed of the fact that I found it romantic because she was a victim. Plus, my feminist awakening led to me being ashamed of finding Hades' actions sexy/romantic. There were some things about myself that I had to learn and come to terms with, but I felt like it was anti-feminist (and still do in some ways...). So I LOVE that you talked about the earlier versions of Persephone's story because it puts things into a greater perspective for me. I was familiar with Inanna's story and consciously appreciated Inanna's agency compared to Persephone, but for some reason I felt distanced from it in a way I didn't feel with Persephone. There was just something spiritually and emotionally wresting about Persephone despite the fact that her victimhood made me cringe (to be honest) for a long time. But knowing her earlier stories and mysteries helps a lot. It's almost like Spirit shines little lights to guide our way and gives us little kernels of understanding, and we have to actually choose to take the journey into grasping the full picture -- how's that for agency! That's how I feel with this transformation in my view of Persephone. It makes me think of the idea that Wisdom is at the center of a great labyrinth, and our life's journey is to ultimately reach that center. The answers won't always be given to us upfront; sometimes we have to journey into what scares us, repels us, makes us feel ashamed, etc. to learn something (i.e. the Underworld). That's the Eleusinian mystery -- or perhaps one of them :) I feel like Persephone has led me onto this journey through her story. Thank you for this video!

Snakes and Medusa have been coming up this week. I named my hair Medusa because when it's unbound and the wind catches it, it can go up into the air in snake like tendrils. I love the question, "Who were you before the world told you who to be." I'll write on that. 💜🙏
