Once more, thank you for the episode; and like the last time i've said: it is nearly a shame that it spread not wider. All Martial Artist out there could do a look over the fence and listen to what other high experienced people out there have to say. (Ok, it took a lot of time to listen to 300-350 hrs.. :D ) People, IT IS FREE! (btw i would give you some credit, but i am seriously ill and so seriously poor.) One critique: the question of the title isn't answered regulary. First, maybe in the Aikidocommunity also, what is the difference between Yoshinkan and other styles. Why should i evtl. take this one to take Y. alive? Instead of Iwama or Ki-Society or, in my possibility german Budo-Society-Aikido? For a notInsider it is complex as the different wing chun styles out there. It is easyer to understand different Tai Chi Styles.. Second, Where is the future of YA? This very smart, good and honorable man said: i do it for sure my way, that is what i learned and stand for. But - in which direction goes YA, can it survive? Greetings

Hey. I would simply get an thanks for your work, your spirit and all the time ya spent here. I am not from Aikido, have a total different background, but in the last week i did a lil bit of research - of my own mind-history. (Because of besides the childhood heroes The Rebels from Liang Shang Po and Carradines 'Kung Fu' Charakter .. and McQuade the Wolf .. my first Real contact, also that one where look Really Real, was Take Sensei in '88. Last weekend i stumbled upon a movie about him from '01, and was more as impressed, 'cause my feelings about him and his art was always true! But life was going in another direction, so i did not come in the near of Aikido or Aikijitsu till today). These podcasts are awesome! The people in there are awesome, all the decades of knowing, training, thinking of, remembering, questioning, searching for ..whatever is awesome. I heard with that one the 3. pc, two with Ellis Amdur and this one. They are so informative and honorable and humble (hope this is the right word i choose. Isn't my mother tongue). All the different martial artists out there are only fishing in their ponds, the other one's do exactly the same (the practicing spiritual people), but the knowledge You few people share for free are astonish! It is nearly a shame that there are .. 16 likes only here :/. Greetings from South Germany and head up! Be water my friends!

Thanks for the videos. It seems there really is a big split in Aikido. A schism. Some people really want the new age "being whole" brand. They say Aikido is the way of peace and harmony. Ok sure but doesn't that mean we beat the attackers who wish us harm? It must mean (in my mind) that we defend ourselves and somehow discover how to restore peace (restore order) by hopefully surviving the attacks of the villains of modern life. Some Aikidoka would disagree with me. I appreciate your martial mindset though. I say this all as merely a fan and observer of Aikido. I'm a boxer (not a good one lol) but I can throw a punch or two. And take one. But I was always interested in Aikido yet frustrated with the conflicting answers and differing emphasis. If I could have learned the "hard style" I probably would have but it's few and far between sadly. We already have a Tai Chi! We don't need another lol

Great Asian co-prosperity sphere is something that Chinese people(and pretty much all Asian nation that invaded by Japan at the time) absolutely HATE it. And Japanese solder did lots lots of war crimes. Many Western people only know Nazi concentration camp and genocide but rarely know what Japanese solder did during the occupation. But, at the pre Japanese invasion, actually there are many Chinese warlord and government generals invite Japanese military personnel to China to be military advisor. Just a little bit history I know and happy to know when O Sensei go to China, he is not engaging those bad stuff, but I’m sure lots of people want to kill him just because he is a Japanese. So, because all of that, When I’m train Aikido, it makes me less sad because of the history😂 I love Aikido by the way!!!! ❤❤❤❤

Self defense is fighting. If you don't know how to fight, you can't defend yourself. You learn to fight by fighting, not by performing pre-arranged drills with a compliant partner, just like you don't learn how to drive a car by riding a skateboard. If you don't fight, you won't defend yourself.

After 18 years of paying my dues to the British Aikido Association, which had factions and was also politically divided between the North, South, East & West divide, where grading levels were pathetic in some and excellent in others... Where sadly people were chasing grades instead of self training to become technically & truly effective in aikido, was in my mind self defeating... Training intensively for all of those years, competing and running my own club and achieving a 3rd dan, and also a senior coach award, I felt it was time to go out on my own . I left because many were brown nosing to so called "sensei" who couldn't find there way out of a wet paper bag, let alone "fight" their way out of one!! Being too controversial in my thinking and attitude to the lack of realism in the training I saw then and still see... I'm glad I went out on my own, because I was able to test my ability against people who didn't want to just fall down, just to make "sensei" look good!! I never had a lot of students, but the Tomiki "aikido" we did was very healthy!!.... As for hakama's? I only wore them for demo's when asked by request for video shooting... I don't profess to be the best in aikido and would never think that, but I know my own shit works having been a doorman/bouncer part time in my past... Application is the key!! .... Good conversation!!

Great conversation gentlemen, all we need is a few hundred thousand more like minded people! The branding and marketing conundrum is arguably one of the hardest aspects in evolving what we do. We've gone with 'Aikido & Aikijutsu" but thats what fit best in our local marketplace, but I'm sure other countries and cultures will need different semantics. With regards to the last point, we already run open style camps twice a year it would be fabulous to get all you guys involved one year - road trip to NZ anyone?

There should be two types of Aikido: One that is more oriented for combat street situations with randori , second can remain the current state of Aikido designed for the sick and old.

One of Shihan Reynosa`s Senior Students was Accosted by 5 gangbangers at a gas station. He was able to Completely defend against (some with knives and chains) in a Very Real "Randori" for approx six minutes before the Police arrived!....Jeff G was still 1kyu before the big trip to Take Sensei`s Montana Ranch in 94.

Have you guys ever looked into Shodokan or Tomiki aikido? I did it for 32 years...Its sport element has many similarities to competitive judo... I found no trouble in applying techniques in sport aikido bouts which allow full resistance and also real life situations as a part time bouncer in my younger years.... Its ALL in the application... The secret is to be soft, pliable and being able to adapt instantly to any given situation... AND lots of practice!! Kata was the ABC... The free randori to full shiai was the reality...

About the link between Aikido and boxing you should tcheck Yoshio Kuroiwa, he was a semi-professional boxer who used to get in street fights and then started aikido. Look for the friendship demonstrations part 4 I believe, it is very interesting!

4:41 You lose your sense and motor control. This is something I feel every time I try Aikido stuff. Once, while I was throwing an ikkyo, a partner yelled at me, "Hey, I have an elbow attached to my arm." I just grabbed it and twisted it around like a screwdriver, using brute force, but it worked. Some day, I'm sure some day I ripping someones arm off like Jason by pulling off those techniques.

Great discussion. Really good to hear different approaches. I wish the discussion went into the importance of striking to close distance. Another benefit of learning striking is to learn to close distance. It gives you ways to interact with strikers besides trying to grab a wrist.
@tristanchermack6735
@tristanchermack6735 Год назад
Striking to create an opening to close distance is very useful, one could even say critical. I think aikido is about closing distance, so having a way to do it safely that is reliable makes aikido more complete. Older pugilism used a variety of strikes to targets which are not part of modern boxing, arms and such, to create those entry opportunities. Thanks for the comment and a great point!
