A few errata: (1) At one point, I referred to Mochizuki, Sugino & Murashige as having studied Yagyu Shinkage-ryu at the Kodokan. Of course, it was a slip on my part as I was already talking about what they actually studied: Katori Shinto-ryu. (2) Also, I did a total gear slip and referred to the military circle around Ueshiba (the Aioijuku) and Ueshiba's renaming of Daito-ryu as Aioi-ryu, with the term "blue." I have no idea how I came up with that. In fact, it was 相生. The first character is a variant that can be understood as connection and the second character as living/life. (3) In my reference to the Mobara rebellion, the farmer's revolt suppressed by the men of Honma Nen-ryu, one error and one item needing clarification. The farmers hired one ronin, Yano Jugoro. He didn't drive off the specialized forces of the lord of the domain by himself - there were over 1000 farmers participating, some surely with ordinary weapons and others with farm implements. When Honma's squad of 100 fighters showed up, one of them, Nakajima Yonojo, was delegated to kill Yano. When he did so, he broke the spirit of the rebels and they were routed.
