thank you brother Nick! The only thing I will add, is to leave a 2-minute moment between the bride and mom for them to talk, ask mom to give her some advice, or to remember her own wedding, some kind of connection.
You know, I actually filmed a little section about this but cut it because I wasn’t making sense in what I said and didn’t want to re-record. Good tip!
I was influenced and I purchased one, lol. However, I'm definitely just a hobbyist that happens to love using cheap lenses to see how much I can get out of them. Back in the day I found mount to fix a dianaF+ lens to an older sony alpha camera and I really loved the results. This is going to bring me back to that so I'm excited about it! Nice to see this review! Thank you!
@@HowToFilmWed I don’t have a PL mount - I just thought it’d be kind of funny with that lens since PL mount sticks out. The mount would be bigger than the lens probably! Haha. Loved the video, Nick!
Thanks so much for this BTS! It's so helpful to see not only the end results but to hear what you're saying to couples and how you are directing them. I have filmed quite a few weddings but I am always looking to improve so I'm excited to put some of this into practice!
If you'd like to add a 3rd as a solo shooter you're going to have to find out which angles you want to be unmanned. I would probably have an unmanned camera as a reaction at the front. After the groom gets to the front get that camera locked off. I'd then move and get the up the aisle shot of people walking down. If you want to add in a gimbal as your 3rd I would hold off on adding this until the main part of the ceremony starts. Hope that helps!
I’ve been using three so far and have everything locked off. But I love the idea of a gimbal for you to add that small movement!!I have been wanting to add a process to get more reaction shots from family and guests.
this is VERY similar to what we do. Only difference is that we use 4 cameras minimum. Also LOVE that you mentioned that the 180 rule changes once the ceremony actually starts after the processional! Great video!
As a solo shooter I use 4 cameras. So the bride cam is set up already before the processional. I use the gimbal camera the same way, and it also leaves me with a camera to get reactions of the front row during vows etc.
I've gone back and forth so many times if a 4th camera is worth it. It would be super helpful to have, however I never wanted to spend the extra money on a camera I would use for just a few shots on the ceremony. Love those reaction shots during the ceremony, though.
Interesting that you shoot the ceremony with only 3 cameras. I'm doing 5 right now; two identical bride and groom cameras on opposite sides, a 70-200 straight down the aisle, a wide angle at the back off to the side, and then I fly around with my 24-70. And I've even considered picking up another camera solely just for reactions in the front row. I just want to make sure my couples are getting every angle they could want but sometimes I wonder if I've gone overboard lol. I'm solo too so its a lot to set up by myself (I mic everybody up and get the DJ feed too).
Seems like a lot, but if it works for you - do it! I decided that I wanted to be as minimal during a ceremony where it was possible to get everything that I needed, therefore 3 cameras.
ahhh this is so so helpful! Audio is the thing that always trips me up the most, I just don't know this lingo when I walk up to a DJ, I usually feel like an idiot. So this was super helpful. I don't think I will sounds so dumb when I walk up to them with a bag of cables!
@@HowToFilmWed Please, do! We'd be happy to see some real-life scenario comparisons with your work-horse camera. I see only one problem - lack of close-up possibilities...
I don’t use one. My S5II does more than enough for me. Couple that with stabilization in Final Cut and I’m more than satisfied. I do think ibis technology will render gimbals obsolete at some point. I’m just happy that it is an option and not a necessity in 2024.
I tried one wedding handheld to give it a shot and I liked certain things about it but I love the look of gimbal shots for almost every reason you pointed out. Except for dancing. I still go handheld for the party.
It comes down to the edit and the type of day it was. If the day was very somber and more of a romantic slow move then 100% you are not going to be able to hide handheld shots in the edit. On the other hand if it was an absolute crazy day and a lot of stuff going on that is easily able to hide handheld / jittery / sea sickness shots in the edit. In my opinion I would prefer to shoot way solid with a gimbal and tripods and then if the footage needs to be crazy just mix it up in the edit you can't do the reverse with already shaky footage.
solution for gimbal shots. dji pocket 3 for that 2 or 3 shots you need on a gimbal. camera on gimbal all day means more metal or material between you and the subject leading to a disconnection
Im with you, John, on this one. Its all about what the Move-meant. The camera's motion is speaking to the viewer and taking them.on an eMOTIONal journey. Intentional or not, everything is saying something. I dont see the gimbal leaving my gear essentials anytime soon.
I ditched mine primarily because I use the Canon R6 with EF glass and it's impossible to balance. I had the Ronin-S, and just grew tired of it being so old, heavy, and clunky. I filmed a real estate video this week with the FX3, Sigma 20mm, and RSC2, and my mind might have been changed about gimbals. Still though, I don't use one enough for weddings to justify re-purchasing one. I hire a second who has one 🫡
Thanks for all the infos, very helpful video !!! Are you focusing in manual or auto. I can't make my mind on this. This is going to be my second season as a wedding videographer and I shoot with an Irix 45mm T1.4 cine Lens. I love the image but manual focus is hard below 2.5-3.0 when there is movement and I loose a lot of the possibilities of going full bokeh which I could do with an autofocus. Also i need a bigger focal length for portraits so I can't make my mind on buying another cine Lens (manual focus) or moving to classic lenses like an 85mm or bigger but with autofocus. Would love to hear feedbacks of people on this 😊
