We’d like to say that TIMECODE IS AWESOME. If you’re using it, good for you and more power to you! Capture ALL of the candid moments you can. buuuuuut, it might be a bit too much to handle for a beginner. So know where you stand, and make sure to do whatever it takes to serve the family best. The more that you can capture THE BETTER.

@@jpemile are you using timecode when you film weddings?
@jpemile
@jpemile 11 месяцев назад
@@BlakePollino It is something I have been looking into for a while now. Since NAB this year, I have been in the waiting list for the Deity PR-2 as it was the best solution for me, at this point in my career. And this whole thing started after justinportermedia replied to one of my comments on a post about the new RODE. Like I said in my previous comment, instead of seing it as something that is overkill, I waited for the right moment to grow into it. When you start having a lot of weddings in a year, every single tool that make your life easier in post is priceless.
@BlakePollino
@BlakePollino 11 месяцев назад
@@jpemile I think the PR-2 is going to check all the boxes, it looks really solid! I hope you enjoy using timecode on the wedding day. The great part about this industry is that there are a thousand ways to film a wedding and serve your clients the way they want to be served. There's no one way that works for everyone and a beginner who chooses not to use an expensive and complicated system is not settling for mediocrity. There are reasons that wedding professionals draw lines at certain equipment choices, there's a reason we don't all run around and film weddings on an Alexa Mini, we all have to make choices about what works for our personal style of shooting. I've filmed weddings with timecode, for me personally it's additional equipment that I'd rather not have to worry about, the pros don't outweigh the cons for me, that's my personal style and that's 100% ok. Once you try it you might decide it's an important part of your kit and you'll never film another wedding without it, and that's 100% ok too!
@jpemile
@jpemile 11 месяцев назад
@@BlakePollino To be fair, it was probably more complicated to get into timecode before. The same way nowadays it is easy to find a mirrorless camera with great dynamic range and LUTs that emulate the “Alexa look” instead of having to use the actual Mini like you said, companies like RODE and Deity are trying to release new products to vulgarise the technology. Calling the technology itself “too much”, “overkill” or “complicated” is just a subtle way to justify YOUR OWN LIMITS. As the goal of my comments was never to get YOU to change YOUR mind on where YOU draw the line but rather just to give viewers reading a different perspective, I will leave the exchange at this point. More power to you for keeping it simple.

@@HowToFilmWed It's great that the mics record locally AND send the signal to the receive as well. Never having filmed a wedding with a wireless system like this, I guess you just put the receiver on whichever camera you're using as the static wide/safety shot? And does the receiver mix the signals from the two mics? 🤔
@ChadWork1
@ChadWork1 11 месяцев назад
Did you test how good the signal is when a human body is between the transmitter and receiver? All the other little wireless Rode systems cut out if you put the pack on the side of the person that's away from the receiver. I can't truse them for weddings because of that.

How does it handle loud music? Is the sound distorted? I'm looking for a new mic for livestreaming Sunday church service and my current mic distorts the music, especially the organ or a brass ensemble. I figure if this can handle music at a reception, it'll handle my church organist! 😀

Hey silly question I am sure...but if I am transmitting to the camera, can I still choose to use the internal 32 bit float recording for the entire recording? I know that the backup file is used when the signal is dropped but am I correct in thinking I can always just use the 32 bit float recording, even when transmitting to the camera (assuming I press record on the tx)? Someone help me out!

GREAT shout on the livestream! I have the Rode Go ii for livestreaming, and I'll buy the Rode Pro for livestream too for sure because #32bit But will these become part of my workflow for weddings? Very nice review? I ordered the unit from B & H. After watch your review (thank you!) and a few others I’m starting to think even with the improvements maybe cancelling my RODE PRO order, get the DGI (is that it) unit instead and maybe wait for them to counter RODE. Looks like the time code is quite limited and with various software easily being able to match video audio seems a bit like RODE might not have been as fourth coming as I (maybe others) would have liked. Your thoughts if you would please. Thank you.

@@garfieldmtifywhat audio gear not camera. What is it that you don't like? DJI can't record 32 bit float audio. I'm sure they'll eventually be able to but the huge huge thing is the 32 bit float internal recording with wireless transmission. Just means there are very few points of failure. The time code is okay but not 'why' you'd buy it. But there's absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that you would get this over the DJI Mics now. 32 bit float is incredible and means the audio won't spike when recording. DJI is 'just' 24 bit and if you get the setting wrong or the talent doesn't listen to your instructions repeatedly and talks too close and loudly into the mic (literally happened to me this weekend over and over again despite constantly telling her not to) then your audio is ruined. Whereas that wouldn't happen with the new Rode Pro here.

A very intriguing audio kit, I’m tempted to order. I was already getting ready to order DR10L Pro, and then RODE dropped the news. One thing I’ve noticed on their website, is that you may also use the receiver as a third “narrator” recorder if you pair it with a lav mic - this makes me wonder if you could plug in a shotgun or stereo mic and have secondary ambient track. Can’t wait for hands-on reviews to start rolling in.

Yeah I've often used a rode wireless mic to plug in a shotgun mic and then transmit it to my camera as a boom mic (not for weddings). But means your shotgun mic doesn't have to be where your camera is. It can be placed somewhere and wirelessly transmitted. Of course it's even better with this as it would be 32 bit float and there's much less risk of it spiking (unless the mic is hit with sound it can't cope with of course).

Prosumer vs Professional. Despite “Pro” being in the name, if it was meant for the “for hire” market it would cost 2-3 times as much (ie SnapOn, Festool, etc) For content creators and casuals this new Rode system is the new market leader. It’s exactly what we’ve been looking for from Rode ever since DJI stole the market. Aside from maybe making the transmitters being a little smaller and subduing the indicator LEDs, there’s absolutely no features or specs I’m left for want. It hits or exceeds every spec and feature I would have asked for, and at $100 less than what I told Rode’s marketing outreach team 6 months ago.
@jambononi
@jambononi 11 месяцев назад
I'm sure there's reasons it's not considered pro. I mean the lack of swappable batteries and even 2 mics going into one transmitter is convenient but actually a hindrance when you need total control over your audio. I experienced this on one job where it actually ended up making things much more complicated. But yeah it's so good for run and gun/wedding/solo shooters. It's so easy. Being wireless so you can monitor but also a perfect recording kit at the same time with 32 bit just removed that entire layer of stress. I'm sure sound guys would choose something else as they can sit behind the console and don't need 32 bit float and prefer control, battery swaps, and a dedicated channel. But yeah for us it's hard to think of much more we could need.

The TASCAM DR10L Pro is much better because it is a wired solution. Any time you have a wireless solution you are always prone to interference. And Blake is right - everything being internal reminds me of an iPhone.
@alvinburrell
@alvinburrell 11 месяцев назад
There is a real issue with recorders that you can't monitor the audio in real time - I have had dresses rustle against the mics and once where the mic dropped down the bra, and at least on the RODE you can hear the audio change and make discrete changes when you can. I could not trust leaving a recorder unmonitored until the end of the day. Maybe there is a feature that allows you to listen on your phone or something but I would rather headphones plugged into my camera to monitor.
@BlakePollino

Thankfully they record to the internal memory so you have a backup just in case you get wireless issues, but I agree!
@asafblasbergvideographer
@asafblasbergvideographer 11 месяцев назад
@@alvinburrell You are 100% right about the TASCAM limitation. I thought about this issue too, and it is a big issue actually. It is very important to be able to monitor the audio in real time. I guess I might just have to go old school and rent a Sennheiser wireless lav system which is going to cost me a lot more dough. The other issue, though is that I film live events/concerts and sometimes it is quite difficult to tell the audience "Wait - we have an audio issue" - so I guess with the TASCAM you just have to take the risk I guess. Test it very well before. Also the TASCAM does have the app where you can see the levels (even though you can't hear anything), which is better than nothing.

Which RODE models support real-time monitoring?@@alvinburrell
@alvinburrell
@alvinburrell 11 месяцев назад
@@asafblasbergvideographer I agree, a big no-no for me; in film production, you would always have a sound engineer to monitor everything because of the impact that failed audio would have; I do find it odd that one would risk not even being able to monitor audio. While it is not always possible to stop a speech, at least you know that there is a problem so if you can't fix you may be able to work around it - when I have not been able to stop an event I have moved a 2nd camera closer just to improve the onboard mic sound placement so I can use that. While the RODE can record for 7 hours max, that is at full 32bit quality so you can drop that lower, but the battery life is a kicker if it runs out, but you can plug a USB battery in, which does take up more space.
