It will never work and the Jews will most probably experience the pogroms again if they form a single state with Palestinians being accorded citizens with equal rights. A democratic state that gives all of its citizens equal rights and respects the wish of the majority is in itself an oxymoron. Remember, democracy is by the people for the people and all the sound bytes that sounds good but the problem is people are morons. In this case, the voters will start supporting and electing leaders who will demand religious laws and before you know it there will be push for the rejection of the very secular nation that gave them these rights in support for a theocracy and theocratic rule. Even a two state solution is in theory a bad idea as the risk of Israel having an immediate hostile neighbour which is ruled by religio facist is guaranteed. They will find themselves unable to control what gathers just outside of their borders and one has to be extremely naive to believe the motivations of these forces will be peace, security, respect if sovereignity and recognition of unuversal human rights. India Pakistan is an excellent example of what will happen to Israel with an independent Palestin nation as its neighbour.
