This is a very interesting and thought provoking conversation. Humans have learned nothing about our history, unfortunately, not in any tangible way to self-correct from this current path. And many of us even lie to ourselves about the things that are real and important. I wonder if our DNA and those animalistic instincts that we still have, even though we consider ourselves to be intelligent, will allow us to move beyond our current path towards destruction. Is there enough good will and true intelligence to correct it?

I love how quick & adaptive & flexible Yuval is when conversing with people. edit: his point at 102:15, that the most helpful thing to do is join an organization or institution. How do we prevent orgs & institutions from exploitation & corruption? Because it seems the shot-callers of society use stories to sway populations and constituents, but they themselves are controlled by their greed lust & envy. Fascinating discussion, thank you so much. Perhaps there is one aspect of the conversation I would push back on-quite a bit, actually-regarding the call to organize and act on what we strongly believe to be right. In my mind, this attitude is at the heart of many of our problems today. If we are honest with ourselves, history teaches us that our solutions for today’s problems often become the problems of tomorrow. For example, the plastic bag was once seen as a solution not too long ago, as was the automobile. I would urge caution in advocating for ideas generated by limited knowledge and narrow perspectives. Based on personal experience, I believe that doing less often leads to less damage caused. When someone confidently advocates a solution to a complex problem such as what this discussion was about, I’m almost certain that the idea is driven by something other than intelligence and benevolence.

I don't believe in historic detemination but i believe that it helps to understand our present position. In human history all wars were about money and perspectives for country development. Religion ie the wholy rock was just a cover, an excuse. In europen moder history big wars happend every 100 years on average. After each war countries signed a deal like Akwizgran, Viena or Jaulta. However capitalism and human competition always led to development of inequalities which led to the next war. This time war in Ukraine is all about a new balance, a new order because ruusian and china fo not agree for US rules and if US and the West does not capitulate there will be a bigger war. Military spending was low because US was a global policement, a pease keeper but we all paid them a contribution with a tax called petrodollars allowing US spreading their domestic fiscal ptoblems around the world. That has ended now and both Russian by over 250% and China over 500% increased their military spending. How about this mr Yuval? Welcome back to a jungle wothout cooperation...

The liberalism is based on the predatory individual, in a life situation in which the social aspect results from the mere struggle between individual interests. It is competition between individuals, between companies. And where does he see cooperation as the most recent liberal idea, that everyone is "his own boss or entrepreneur"? Although he is neither a fascist nor a Marxist, his summaries of Marxism and fascism are a joke. Anyway, Harari, once again, repeats his mild, catastrophist and simplistic speech -- an oracle!

The Cold War was World War III, in the so called "Third World". I'm not sure naming "Liberalism" as a relatively benign narrative is sufficiently deep as an analytical concept. I think its important to understand social organization of production, geopolitics and the struggle for world hegemony. Capitalism (liberalism) permits cooperation, but it is also at conflict with the environment because of its need for eternal economic growth. Also, it creates the complexity that requires larger masive markets and exchanges that fuel the need for Artificial Intelligence.

Consciousness - self awareness? Are computers aware of their own existence?

I absolutely hate it when intellectuals write books and give speeches about things they never bothered to spend 8 hours learning what it is they talk about. Anyone in the world can find out how AI works for free just by studying statistics for a few hours. Look at a matrix and tell me that thing has wants and feelings. If you can do that then there's a mathematical proof you can make for consciousness, sentient experience, and the meaning of life. People love to speak so authoritatively on the existential threat of AI but the only threat of any tool is the stupidity and exclusivity of the persons wielding that tool. Media is a threat to democracy because of special interest groups, propaganda, and scams. Commercials are all of the above, but we laud capitalism so that's not a threat that's a feature. When commercials sway cultural rather than sales suddenly it's a catastrophe? I say no, selling people things by manipulation rather than practicality is not productive, though it does add to gdp. AI is not the threat, it has no wants or incentives it is churning statistics. The closest humans come to machinery is primal emotion like fear, or curiosity or hunger or sex drive. Everything beyond instinct is fundamentally unique to life and not mechanical. AI is nothing but mechanical. It has not capacity for feeling because it is not emergent from layers of analog processes, it is emergent from switches. It's not even similar, it's closer to a rock rolling down a hill than goal seeking or intelligent. This fear mongering about statistical Bayesian inference is absurd and its not helping anyone have a competent, coherent conversation about the ethic regulation of the open research and application of machine learning algorithms and tools. Isolating power is not a way to prevent harms from its discovery since the "threat" also happens to be the most viable and cheapest protection against its malicious implementations.

Brilliant exchanges. Interesting questions. As evolution continues,it will affect the ways schools function. Less physical presence will be needed. And the now question,who’s ideas,policies and government will be dominant ? AI will have a definite impact. How mankind programs will be of significant importance. Harari hit the nail on the head that it is essential we dampen fascist and socialist ideologies which claim conflict is the motor of history and that we ought to amplify liberal ideology which promotes cooperation and tolerance. Universities, like Cambridge, need to take a long, hard look in the mirror here. Where are the moderate, liberal conservative voices? Excluded and silenced, because moderate conservatives are viewed through the socialist prism of conflict and are deemed enemies to be defeated. Where are the moderate, liberal pro-MLK voices? Excluded and silenced, because moderate pro-MLK voices are viewed through the CRT prism of conflict and are deemed "racist", colour-blind enemies to be eradicated. Where are the moderate, liberal feminists? Excluded and Silenced, because liberal feminists are viewed through the radical left-wing prism of conflict as being "misogynistic" because their feminism is not radical enough or "transphobic" because they dare to claim being a woman has some limited biological basis. Yes, right-wing nationalism and authoritarian populism are also inherently conflictual and demand redress, but we seriously need to wake up at Cambridge and other universities to the obvious, crippling intolerance and illiberalism of the left, which permeates our institutions and, with social exclusion and vitriol, coercively shuts down genuinely diverse, well-meaning and moderate liberal debate. We continue down this path at our peril. Even now as I write this, I imagine my comment will be censored, silenced, excluded. Liberalism is the antithesis of authoritarianism. Why even bother attempting to defeat or offset Russian and Chinese authoritarianism, when we ourselves enable and subject ourselves to authoritarianism within our own institutions? How can genuine, permissive liberals possibly marshal a compelling case for liberalism, tolerance, and cooperation to win over Western elements who may have growing sympathies towards right-wing identitarianism when we ourselves seemingly support left-wing identitarianism? It defies logic. And, it also paves a way to further polarization which, almost by definition, is anti-liberal. The solution? A paradox: total, uncompromising intolerance of intolerance and an attendant celebration and reassertion of the very Western liberal institutions which helped usher in the great post-WW2 peace, unprecedented interstate cooperation, and the global human rights programme. Does that mean we can't hear or take, say, postcolonial criticisms of Western liberalism seriously? Of course it doesn't mean that. But total, ill-intentioned abnegation of the West and recourse to authoritarian censorship to silence pro-Western interlocutors or (especially young) individuals who are critical of conflict theorists should be rejected outright. We need a radical shift - a serious programme - back to well-intentioned, tolerant, pro-liberal discourse which has, as its endgame, tolerance, cooperation and universal flourishing as its guiding principles. Humankind fights wars battles and arguments to preserve their safety based upon their perception of what constitutes danger. We fight for resources because resources keep us alive. We seek power to maintain our boundaries so we can feel safe. Advances and progress as Cavemen came about because we were afraid of the dangerous environment. Our fear generates activity toward our perception of safety. We have an overwhelming amount of laws that are to maintain safety. Money is spent on often illogical stuff because we are fearful. The problem is our fear is often misguided and illogical. I believe we dropped 2 (not just one) atomic bombs on Japan to warn the world not to attack us. The war was about over when we ... The US.. killed those people.
