Thanks for this footage. Crazy that they are playing in week 1 of the college football season this year and this was the last time they played against each other
Great footage for sure! Be sure to check out the other vintage films we have too, including the famous 1945 Army team with two Heian winners. A great film!
Wow.. This was a year before my 63 year old mother was born. My late grandparents on my dad's side would've been roughly 9 years old. This was only 6 years after Hank Williams had passed. It's strange to see how similar, yet also different it was back then. It's more similar than I would've thought. Though you can notice more of the difference of that old era by looking at the festivities, and the attire of the cheerleaders. I'm kinda surprised at how many people were there, though I probably shouldn't be. I should probably be more surprised that there are still a bunch of people who attend today, considering the amount of outlets we have today, compared to back then. It's awesome that this was recorded and preserved.

You could see him probably thinking when the coach (Fontes?) game him last second instructions; ‘Yeah, coach, I know: hit the hole and run to daylight.’
Amen And how WONDERFUL it would’ve been for us the fans & the NFL. I can remember watching him play every single Thanksgiving day, and it just hurt - playing with high school lineman 😢

3 mins 45 seconds in he gets tackled and grabs his head. He wouldn't be able to play anymore in a game after that in today's game. Clear concussion protocol status from a hit he likely took earlier in the game. Don't let your kids play football.
I don't know, I think boys get more out of playing football than an injury could take away. Any activity has inherent risk, including driving your car for the grocery store.

Imagine if they had 14 games back then he would’ve went for over 3000 yards he averaged 200 yards a game that season that is absolutely amazing without the doubt in my opinion the greatest collegiate running back of all time running backs in general of all time and my personal favorite.

The absolute saddest sport truths is that one of most if not THE most deserving man to never get a Superbowl ring is Barry Sanders. I loved Walter Payton and Earl Campbell and Emmett Smith but if I got to pick one player for every position to field a team, Barry Sanders would be my running back hands down.
Imagine having a head coach wait until mid 3rd quarter of week 1 to play the third pick and Heisman trophy winner for a team that had gone 4-12 the year before.
Some of the guys I played youth football with (Lakers and ymca league warriors) in Wichita went on to play w/Barry at north high (redskins) I moved away in eight grade so I'm not sure if Barry played on any of the teams I played against growing up but I love his story and most of all his humility and attitude.

He Played 10 seasons, not 9. Also, he never had a inkling to go to Miami in 99 to join a Fading Dan Marino who quite honestly was a shell of himself that year. He’s actually NEVER left Detroit. He made it his Permanent Home. But, I WILL say he was actually trying to get to the Green Bay Packers the year he retired and they wouldn’t let him do that for obvious reasons. They told Barry he would NEVER play for ANY organization other than The Lions. He definitely wanted to Join a young Brett Favre team that had everything BUT Barry on their team.
