Scale Modeling and Tabletop Gaming

I’ve been building models since I was a kid, but recently got back into the hobby as an adult looking to develop as a model builder. I also enjoy tabletop gaming which will feature heavily on this channel as well.

Suggestion for the Metal finish: Paint the Wings top and bottom with the Tamiya Silver. Then get a reference which shows the areas top and bottom which were actually bare metal and mask off the painted area -.ONLY. Next lay a gloss black surface over the bare metal fuselage and those unpainted parts of the wings, and then repeat with an airbrushed metalizer such as AK Extreme or Alclad. The flying surfaces of ALL Mustangs were delivered filled and primed from the factory, then either camouflaged or painted silver. This was done to reduce drag and improve flying characteristics. There are numbers of good photos that show the wings looking silver where the fuselage looks like polished bare metal.

Having a one piece closed canopy also makes for a good mask for painting if you're going on to make an open canopy version. The only fault in detail that I can see with this kit is the one that is in every Spitfire kit except the 1:32 Kotare ones - there should be no visible rivets on the leading edges. They were filled and sanded at the factory before primer an paint was applied (similar to the wings of a Mustang).

Glad to see the nose art does not have any actual 'art', ie girls. I work for an after-market company which produce nose art decal sets fo all sorts of kits trying to give a little colour and variety to what is usually available from the kit makers. I understand that this kit is limited to the 100th so they have to go with what they used but lots more work for me! Great reveal, the kit look superb as you would expect from a re-boxing of the HK models kit. Eduard are one of the best for the quality of tooling so their additional bits are, I'm sure, excellent.

I almost want to say that it depends on the drone, Ukraine has used drones to down 2 helicopters and you can put money on the bet that they or someone else is already working on a jet powered drone to take down planes, that tech is coming. Downing a drone shouldn't count as a "real" air to air kill, but it should have some kind of status, the destruction a cruise missile or large drone can cause is truly horrific if used to target civilians as Russia has, so downing them does save lives.
@Sidewinderhobbies

In WW2 V-1's counted as kills as the explosion of one could destroy the chasing plane! Modern drones don't fight back and can be engaged at a safe distance even with 20mm! Not real kills! I think the USAF is pushing this as a DEI stunt as one of the pilots is a woman!!!

The American female pilot is in the US Navy not the USAF. That’s always a possibility although I would anticipate the Navy doing more to promote it. I wasn’t able to find good solid evidence the Navy is counting them as legit kill claims other than the pictures of kill markings on Hornets. The Navy even chose the oddly worded “successful air to air engagement” that mentioned the female aviator. But I’m sure saying “one of our pilots got a kill” is not politically correct.

The "new" ??? Eduard decals are SO easy to deal with. Removing the carrier film while seemingly dicey at first, has now been proven to be very straightforward; I sussed out and used a couple of easy really simple techniques to remove the carrier film very early on. The results of the simple carrier film removal techniques reveal a decal that rivals the masked and painted equivalent available in the aftermarket sector. It's mainly all about varnish layers and beforehand and appropriate or relevant decal setting-solutions available, ie Tamiya Markfit Stong or Mr Mark Setter... even Microset works, just depends on your paint or varnish choice as to which of the many techniques there are for the fantastic Eduard decals. Check out the techniques being used now, there are so many posts online now showcasing extremely easy ways to deal with the carrier film. Eduard do the best models on the market, a decal problem shouldn't dissuade you SO easily. Look at Tamiya - the best, again, but they can't get the thickness out of their decals, yet so many people continue to work around that. With ease... It's really no biggie either way. Maybe time for you to learn afresh and pick up some new techniques, everything is evolving for the better 😊 Remember, a poor tradesman always blames his tools or materials lol 😅 Go well 🤙

It's kind of a dick move for Eduard to not want people to see the "secret bonus" . Most of us are not going to pay over $300 for this kit. We just can't afford it. And one little bonus part or whatever is not going to change that. And not letting us see it will not help Eduard sell this to model builders that CAN'T afford it anyway. $300 for a 1/48 B-17...phah! I'll just build one my Revell kits. Eduard can take their secret bonus and go bleep themselves.

You wouldn’t want to buy anything else. I’m not a fan of the marketing and gimmicks but I want a kit that is complete. Many plane kits, I pay extra for masks at a minimum. Seatbelts and decals are other purchases. I can actually see myself only buying kits like the 100th. Another factor is finding these extra items. Seems I can never find everything at one place. Many of the subplots-that-went-nowhere would have worked better, had “Masters of the Air” been centered around Robert Rosenthal. “Sandra” is who told Crosby about what happened to France’s Jewish community, which is why he suspected she was a spy. Same goes for the Comet Line, due to Rosie crash-landing in American-occupied France. While the only time the subplot in Stalag-Luft 3 worked, (apart from the evacuation march and Cleven’s escape) was when it portrayed the dangers Jewish POWs faced. A lot of the pacing issues, could have been fixed had the first three episodes been condensed into two, and the back end been given more space to breathe. As it would have allowed for more episodes, in the later part of the series. Crosby’s first mission as lead navigator, should have been the first mission shown. Rather than the 100th’s inauguration mission, as it did not feature any main characters the audience would need to care about. While Rosie arriving in England, with other replacement crews, would have been a great juxtaposition to the Regensburg shuttle. As it would have helped balance out the action, and introduce him much earlier.
@Sidewinderhobbies

Kill ratios is a worthless measurement. Would I consider F16 to be the worlds best aircraft if it scored an amazing kill ratio of 300 to 1 against third world countries flying M-15 jets with inexperienced pilots? Of course not. You always have to look at the opposition, did this aircraft fight good enemy planes or crappy enemy planes? did it fight against good pilots or bad pilots? Did the enemy air force have a good organization and good cooperation between air defence and fighter jets? If your enemy suck, then of course it is easy to score enormously high kill ratios even with an mediocre airplane. Was Buffalo brewster one of the best planes of world war 2? Probably not, but Finland did well with the plane against the russian airforce and its bad pilots. But in the pacific was the plane so bad that the American military considered it obsolete and retired it in the war against Japan. The battle tank with the best kill ratio in world war 2 was the Ferdinand (aka Elephant). It was a powerful vehicle and the crews were both skilled and lucky to gather such high kill ratios with this mechanically unreliable heavy slow crappy vehicle. Youngsters and wheraboos on the internet loves to claim that this vehicle was great as they only look at the kill ratio. But the German military itself considered this vehicle to be bad. They did not want this tank. They gave the contract for mass production to the Tiger I tank instead, and never in the war did it ever change its mind. Which just shows that Ferdinand was not a good vehicle. It was too expensive to produce, its exotic engine broke down constantly, the vehicle was too heavy to cross bridges or to get towed to a repair shop if it got damaged by a landmine. The tank lacked a turret and its gun traverse was extremely bad. So yes, it was a terribly bad vehicle. And despite its impressive kill ratio I do not think anyone with a deep knowledge of tanks would seriously say that this was among the top 5 best tanks of world war 2.
@Chris-bv4ko
@Chris-bv4ko 4 месяца назад
As I understand it, the Ferdinand was not exactly as you described. The hull was originally intended and made to compete for contract to produce the upcoming Tiger. Porsche, I believe, made these hulls. 90 of them were produced before the contract was awarded. Unfortunately for Porsche, they lost the contract so they were stuck with 90 tank hulls. To try to make use out of these, Porsche then converted the 90 hulls to the Ferdinand tank destroyer. They never produced more than the originally 90 and the Ferdinand design was never the intended final product. The German army didn't reject the Ferdinand in favor of the tiger. They just made use of it because they needed every vehicle they had. The Ferdinand also did see combat before the actual tiger tank and 4 Ferdinands allegedly took part in the defense of Berlin. The Ferdinand was big and slow just like the King Tiger and Tiger and also had mechanical issues just like them as well. That was common with most german heavy tanks not just the Ferdinand.
@nattygsbord
@nattygsbord 4 месяца назад
@@Chris-bv4ko Your comment was completly worthless. I already know everything you said. It had nothing to do with kill ratios. Nor have you put forward a single argument why it was the best tank in world war 2 - which it wasn't. A garbage comment and a waste of my time.
@Chris-bv4ko
@Chris-bv4ko 4 месяца назад
@@nattygsbord I never said the Ferdinand was the best tank of the war. I was pointing out that your characterization of the Ferdinand was incorrect. It wasn't even a tank really. It was a tank destroyer/assault gun. You said you knew everything I said, but apparently you don't. You essentially said the Ferdinand sucked and the Germans rejected it because it had no turret, was too slow, too expensive, and they chose the Tiger instead. That is absolutely incorrect. As I said, it was never Ferdinand v Tiger. It was Porsche Tiger v Henschel Tiger. Porsche lost, so he had to find another use for the hulls he had already produced. Then he made the Ferdinand which was a mutant hybrid of sorts. The Germans did not reject the Ferdinand because it was too big, too heavy, or too expensive. On the contrary they made extensive use of them and even upgraded them after Kursk. Also, not having a turret was a hallmark of many tank destroyers, it made them cheaper and quicker to manufacture; not more expensive. If the Ferdinand sucked because it didn't have a turret, then you must also think the Stug sucked because it also didn't have a turret even though the Stug destroyed more armored vehicles than any other vehicle in the entire war. Being big and slow with mechanical issues doesn't make the Ferdinand worse than other German tanks. All German heavy tanks suffered from that issue. Since only 90 Ferdinand's were ever made, it was inevitable that the Ferdinand would have a high k/d ratio, especially with thousands of Soviet tanks. I never said that was a good indicator of finding the "best" tank.

So, you cast doubts on the USAF figures, but take Russian, Chinese and NK numbers as gospel as to the loss numbers? I know you briefly mention that they may have had some issues with their numbers, but you do not spend as much time exploring that as you do the USAF. It may well be that the kills claimed by the USAF were inflated by a factor of 2. It is also highly likely that the numbers cited as losses by Russia, China and NK were divided by 2, so, while the actual kill numbers may be lower on the USAF side and losses higher on the Russia, China, NK side, the ratio is still probably close to the 10:1 that has been touted all these years.
@Sidewinderhobbies
@Sidewinderhobbies 4 месяца назад
I spend most of my time on the USAF simply because no one claimed as high of a kill ratio as they did or as few aircraft lost in air to air combat as they did. You are correct that Soviet numbers are highly suspect, which is compounded by the fact that Soviet and Chinese fighters did not work together nor share information. (Examples exist of Chinese and Soviet pilots claiming the same F86) The final number I presented of a 2:1 ratio in favor of the F86 takes into account deliberate inaccuracy on both sides by examining kill/loss claims on both sides with corresponding dates, and trying to match them up as best as possible while finding “operational losses” that should have been combat losses. I could have expounded on that final number more in the video.

Kill ratio has never been about the pilots, it's always been about the planes. The famous 103:0 kill ratio for the F15 makes no claims on whether or not the pilots survived.

@@launchsquidhow many pilots shot down those 103 foes? Kill ratio is airframes but they don't tell the whole story

Perhaps the story of Rosey should should be its own movie - now that there is an interest in the activities of the 8th.

I have a lot more info if you'd like to hear. I was lucky enough to attend a Reunion of the 100th in February of 2019 at Palm Springs Air Museum where I met the families and 9 of the original flying/ground crews that had attended. In March of this year, I was invited by a friend with credentials to the private screening of the last episode on the day it dropped, with a presentation and Q/A session with the stars, and Gary Goetzman, one of the Executive Producers. Gary filled in a lot of information about the production. Then, in early April, as a speaker in that month's "Hangar Talk" event, the Chino Planes of Fame hosted the show's official historical consultant, and the 100th Bomb Group's Official Historian. I was able to speak one-on-one with him and he answered any and all of my questions.

Absolutely! I wish more were still alive to tell their story.
