Hampshire, in Amherst, Mass., is among the most innovative colleges in the country, challenging students to design their own programs of study and recruit a faculty committee to advise them using narrative evaluations rather than grades. Like a graduate school for undergraduates, the success of the College can be measured by the mainstreaming of many of its innovations in education and the achievements of its alums: Academy Award and Emmy Award winners, best-selling authors, scientists, historians, Peabody winners, MacArthur Foundation awardees, Fulbright scholars, and more. The College is ranked 40th in the US for percentage of alumni who earn doctorate degrees according to the National Science Foundation. More than a quarter of its grads have started their own venture or organization, landing the college on Forbes’s 2015 list of top-ten most-entrepreneurial colleges. Hampshire is part of the Five College Consortium alongside Amherst, Smith and Mt. Holyoke Colleges and UMass Amherst.

Attending Hampshire for college was really a GREAT experience for me in a myriad number of ways, BUT chief among them was getting to know The Farm Center. It's an integral part of the campus community, and it's the backbone of the college's mission to instill self-sufficiency and environmental awareness in each student. I spent a LOT of time there, interacting with the Animals, picking up mine (and my Modmates) Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares so we'd have healthy meals to eat in our Mod, including fresh veggies and organic meats, walking the trails, and loving the connection to nature. Growing up my family split their time in between NYC & Southern Vermont (where my parents owned a small farm) and so, I was taught about agricultural sustainability from a young age by my parents. Also the entrepreneurial aspects of Farm Life in the urban environment because we'd sell the fresh eggs, honey, syrup and Apples harvested from our farm at Farmer's Markets in NYC. We had Horses, a Cow, Chickens, Goats, a couple of Pigs, raised Bees for Honey and harvested our own Maple Syrup and Apples from our Orchard on our family farm. Therefore, I was ALREADY pretty well-versed in farm life when I first came to Hampshire, but my knowledge and understanding of it grew exponentially during my college years. And even though my academic concentrations at Hampshire were based in the Performing Arts (🎭 & 📽️), living off the Farm while being part of the Hampshire campus community IS important to recognize as part of not just the overall Hampshire experience, BUT, also the larger lived experience of the American agricultural and food sustainability movement and it's history.

Isn’t it that Uncle Sam provoked Soviet and tempted them to enter the marshy lands of Afghanistan ? Again it was the same imperial mindset that commissioned, trained and armed young Afghans to fight with Russians, bleed them and force them to a humiliating withdrawal. And then the same mindset in a quid-pro-quo manner invaded Afghanistan so as to repeat the history it never learned. As the fate would have it, a negotiated withdrawal followed and as a collateral damage Pakistan suffered a colossal loss of life, resources and peace.

It's all very interesting but it really doesn't speak about the origins of life either in the formation of the original hydrogen or the carbon based molecules organising into sentient life. Also his idea that there are thousands of earth like planets and the implication that life is on them too has no empirical evidence at all in fact quite the contrary. Most of the known earth like planets" are not earth like at all. They are incredibly hostile environments where no life like our own here would ever be likely to form. In the end there is still nothing here that refutes the logical conclusion that complex things come from an original design whether they go through a process of emerging complexity or not.

Brilliant that the college chose Anais Nin as guest speaker. Lucky are those students. Notice she was never reading from notes. It all came from her head and her heart. I was reading her memoirs about this time. Nothing like them.

Awesome research! there was a recent study in the UK on how ectomycorrhizal fungi are by far the most efficient means of carbon sequestration. I wish that study got more focus here in the U.S. - essentially the proposal was to inoculate and colonize tree farms with ectomycorrhizal fungi to increase carbon sequestration.

Hampshire is located in South Amherst, Massachusetts. About two hours West of Boston, one hour West of Worcester, MA -- three and a half hours Northeast of NYC, 90 minutes from New Haven,CT; two hours from Providence, RI & Albany, NY an hour from Hartford, CT and 30 minutes from Springfield, MA. Hampshire is also part of the Five College Consortium, along with Amherst, Smith & Mt. Holyoke Colleges & the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. The Consortium allows Hampshire students to take courses at, and use the academic, cultural & social resources of the four other campuses. It's a REALLY good college for creative, independent and motivated students who want to have control over building their own college educations. I attended Hampshire from 1993-1998. Academic Leave & Field Study are both options that students at Hampshire can utilize during their time there, usually after their second (or within their) & third years.

As a parent of a recent graduate (17F), I could not be more thrilled with my daughter's choice to attend Hampshire. She received the education she was interested in and expanded her collaborative skills to delve into personal and professional exploration rather than follow a prescribed cookie-cutter model. To other parents considering Hampshire: let go of your notions of what college looked like for you and how it should look for your child. Trust your student and the faculty at Hampshire to truly push for developing deep understanding, to create interconnected solutions, and to become a young adult ready for life's challenges.

19 minutes in, I already see two errors that these reenactors are making, that could cause frightening losses if done by real 1840s folk== 1) When making cheese they were allowing the whey to drain away.... Whey has important nutrients and it was saved, poured on grain or corn creating a mush that was fed to pigs. 2) blacksmiths never worked alone, in order to be productive one always had a BOY working the bellows and shoveling the coal. Also, one always has a piece heating in the fire while pounding on the last piece going back and forth, you literally don't stop hammering. My great grandpa was a blacksmith and shop owner with farriers working under him. I studied to be a Machinist.

Yeah.. okay... But this is a pretty historically accurate doc overall. Even living in Rural NE today lots of these traditions still apply. Although modernity has made things a lot easier I can definitely see many commonalities especially regarding organic agriculture in NE today. The folks reenacting these tasks are doing a pretty nice job demonstrating them without a lifetime of training under their belts... on top of that, frightening losses could come at a surprise in many forms during this time! Thank you Ken Burns! lol

If U have the courage , fight the battle from Where U r born/ or ur land of ethnicity .Face the peolple at the ground level within the country itself instead of bitting abt the bush at a distant alien place with a copy cat englicised accent to impress small alienated diaspora out of ur own mother land .

I worked as a phone fundraiser during the S95 semester for The Hampshire Fund as my on campus work/study job. It was a pretty cool job, they set up the office in Cole Science, and we talked to Alums across the country. I worked mainly evening shifts from 6-10pm (my days at that time were STUFFED full with my courses and a second, off-campus job) and talked to West Coast Alumni from the PST time zone to get them to donate.
