Good to see them eating the apple Sydney 👍 I wonder who put that leg band on the female? Seems to me they have put it on too tight as it's effecting the way she's walking. Maybe it escaped from a cage not sure why a wild bird would have a band on it's leg? When I used to feed them when I was a kid I would test how far in the house they would come. The adult neighbor from next door was over talking to my father one day and he said why don't you catch one of them. And I said because they trust me, he told me later in life that he felt embarrassed when I said that because I was only 9 or 10 at the time lol. I used to catch lizards and things as a young boy growing up in Australia but I always let them go again in the same place that I caught them but I did not catch birds.
No better feeling for me than knowing that a wild animal trusts you. You may have seen the Backyard Birds of Australia channel she has all types of birds that come into her house. Some great videos showing the trust the birds have for her.
Heartbreaking to see the effects of beak and feather disease on these beautiful birds. We had a cockatoo visit us who was in the later stages, with no feathers left except on his wings and tail. So, while he could still fly, he had no protection from the heat or cold. We set aside a special bowl just for him and fed him daily for over six months. Sadly, one cold winter day, he stopped coming. I hope he didn't suffer too much in the end.
The cockatoo in the background may - in fact I'm pretty sure of it - have beak and feather disease. Do not call control, they will kill it without a second's thought and its partner will nearly die of grief, if it doesn't. Give it thyme, oregano, and plenty of nutrients. It will survive and pass a degree of immunity on to the young. But it needs help. Look out for it.
Rainbow Lorikeets are feisty little birds, I also know a rosella that will throw out his chest and bounce madly at an entire family of magpies and send them flapping a few feet away in alarm. It's all about the attitude. Birds are amazing, intelligent, feeling little creatures, particularly our beautiful Australian birds. I love them.
