Welcome to Acrylic Spillis, I recently got back into miniature painting after a 20+ year hiatus and I can safely say it’s now consumed my life! The purpose of this channel is to share my painting knowledge and hopefully both amateur and seasoned painters will find my content of interest. So, let’s get painting, inspire and improve as we come together and enjoy this amazing hobby.
GW should not be immune to criticism, but they are far from the evil corporation that people make them out to be. For the most part, the company is actually made up of people who love this hobby as much as you or me. They are the leaders in the market, and that means they set the price at the top end of the market. As far as hobbies are concerned, it's very middle of the road. I come from motorcycle racing. It makes Warhammer look like pocket change. In ten years of Warhammer I haven't come close to spending what it costs for one season of racing. You have made a lot of good points, but I can understand why people get so passionate on the other side of the discussion. It's an amazing hobby, and my life is better because of it. Just found your channel. The content is top notch. Subbed. Thanks for sharing!!!
Beautifully done. Have to say, I'm impressed with the AK Interactive colours. I'm going to have to check some of those out. Thank you for another excellent video. I wouldn't go replacing the crew just yet 😅 )O(
Thanks! He was a really fun model to paint. I can’t recommend the AK paint range highly enough! I love the fact that they dry more matte than the citadel range. And the variety of colours is mind blowing! Which paint range do you use at the moment? Haha what crew do you subscribe to?
Like another of the comments, I recently decided to pick up painting minis again after more than a decade and, having watched your painting skin video, I couldn't resist this one. I really like your straight forward and knowledgeable delivery and, of course, your painting style. Thank you. Subscribed )O(
Thank you so much! It’s amazing how many people are getting back into the hobby after seriously long extended breaks. Thank you for commenting and subscribing 🙌🏼
I stumbled across your channel today via the Beastman video. It is refreshing to find a person with a great attitude...and logical thinking. We all have opinions with how GW operate these days, especially when we lived through how different things used to be so many years ago. I have been in the hobby since the late 90s, so has my husband. We have taken breaks here and there, but are now enjoying both AOS and 40k. We get to share the love of Warhammer with our almost 15 year old son! Yes Australian prices are very expensive, but we love the models, lore, settings, painting and fact that there are other people who play these games, so that a variety of events exist.
Thank you ☺️ I’m exactly the same, I got back into the hobby about two years ago since last playing in the late 90’s. And that’s really cool that you guys play as a family 👍🏼 I’ve seen how much it costs over there! So fair play to you for sticking with it! It’s such a great hobby as there’s literally something for everyone.
@@AcrylicSpillis You are welcome, I am glad more people are making content about Warhammer these days. It can be harder in some parts of the world to find like minded folks.
It’s amazing! Especially when I think back to the 90’s and the stigma (at least in the uk) that used to be attached to the hobby. If you don’t mind me asking, how popular is it over in Australia? As I imagine the high cost over there must be a stumbling block for a lot of people. Especially new hobbyists?
@@AcrylicSpillis Australia suffers a little from everyone being quite far away from each other, but here near Melbourne this year our biggest tournament event (ark 40k) expanded into a much bigger ARCFEST last month. It's painting comp ArcOpen got bigger, and Age of Sigmar, Heresy and a couple of other game systems had events too. There have been more clubs, often running smaller tournaments too. The club we go to sometimes is open twice a week, they were saying they have had so many people recently, that they ran out of space, even with an overflow room out the back. The cost here may be pushing some to 3D printing and using One Page Rules...our local store owner says he is seeing less of customers that used to come in & buy Warhammer & he is one of the few places that still offers discounts.
Wow, the orange ink really increased the vibrancy! Looks great. The Black Green and Grim Brown made for a interesting base-coat rather than moving up from black.
Inks are awesome! And are perfect for creating OSL and energy effects. I find we tend to get stuck in our ways when building up from the usual black, white or grey base coat and actually looking at different colours to build up from creates more interesting results 👍🏼
This channel is criminally underrated! Your content is absolutely on point - thank you for all the efforts you take to explain your process as you paint; I find it extremely helpful and informative! Can’t wait for the next video!
Thank you so much, that’s really kind of you 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the video and honestly, it’s comments like yours that encourage me to keep making content. So again, thank you for your support. Ps: I’m already working on the next one 👍🏼
Remember your first model will suck. Keep that model and keep painting. Very soon you will see how far you have come. It’s a great feeling. The hardest part for me was thinning the paints correctly. Great video!!!!
You’re completely right. It’s always amazing looking back at your older models and your latest one just to see how far you’ve progressed. Haha I know that feeling! And then when different brands react differently adds another learning curve 😂 but it’s all part of the fun.
Really nice video. This cleared a lot of things up for me, I was getting quite frustrated with some of the colouring. I was gifted Army Painter Speedpaints but I find they're a little too thin, even after arm-aching shaking of the bottle which I've seen people complain about with that brand. I have a question about primer since I don't see a lot of talk about it online - should I use a brighter primer like white if I'm painting something that's very bright like yellow for example? I bought ash gray primer and my colours like brighter/paler yellows are taking many many coats for the colour to stick. Thanks!
Thank you so much 😊 I personally haven’t used the army painter speed paints, but most of those paint ranges will be very thin no matter how much you shake them and the coverage depends on the colour as some are way more pigmented than others. So primers do make a massive difference to be honest and if you’re painting a model primarily yellow white will help you massively as the yellow will have better coverage. But I personally don’t like using just white as I basically use black for pretty much every model. This is because I like working from the shadows out to the highlights, if you know what I mean. But, if you’re going to be using speed paints exclusively it might be worth you trying zenithal highlighting. Which involves you priming the model in black all over and then white from directly above it establishes your shadows and highlights. If you then use your speed paints over that you’ll find it easier and you’ll see better results. And if you search “slap chop” you’ll see examples of people using that technique, unfortunately I haven’t got a video on it. And just so you know, yellow is a very tricky colour to use as it normally has less coverage than a lot of colours. So, you just need to take your time and build it up gradually to get your desired coverage. I hope that helps?
@@AcrylicSpillisThat's perfect. Thank you so much for that, I'll definitely try zenithal highlighting, and I'll look into slap chop as well. I had a feeling yellow might be one of those weird colours to get right. Thanks so much, that's given me a bit more motivation, it was becoming very deflating.
No worries! And yellow is definitely one of those colours so if you’ve just started I can understand why it probably feels quite deflating. But honestly, just keep preserving and it’ll all make sense 👍🏼
Love the outcome of that base in particular! What kind of cat litter do you use that has those rockier chunks? (Not a cat owner myself) the kind I have to hand is super absorbent and tends to puff up when glued/painted--though I'm sure that's desirable for its intended purpose :)
Thanks! You want to get the really cheap all clay variety. To get more variety I whizz it round a cheap coffee grinder for a few seconds. It expands a little when you glue it, but once it dries it pretty much returns back to normal. Hope that helps 👍🏼
Nice video, I'm hoping to get back into painting minis after twenty-odd years and it's good to see a simple explanation that doesn't get intimidatingly detailed! Also, painting watercolours has taught me that using a mug for your water is a dangerous game...
Thanks! I wanted to try and make it accessible. That’s awesome! You won’t regret it, as I got back into the hobby after 20+ years too and it’s been all consuming since. Hahaha I know! There’s been a couple of close calls!
Really great job explaining your method on building the base! ty i have some new models primed and ready once I get a day off :) going to rewatch as I try my hand.
Thank you! I’m glad you think it’ll be helpful 😊 I feel not enough people talk about how important patience is and how it’s really all about practice instead of speed and trying to complete a model as fast as possible.
Great vid again. I really liked the part where you showed how and why you changed the beard's color. As a new painter these types of tid bits in particular are especially helpful because it'll relate to our inevitable mistakes and the struggles of fixing it. lol :)
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found it useful. Yeh it can be a pain when something just doesn’t feel right. But whenever we make mistakes they can be fixed 90% of the time 😊
Hi! I am actually working on an old WH fantasy tomb king model. I just need to finish up the touch ups and do the base then it's done! :D Next will be a pink horror I think to practice wet blending. :)@@AcrylicSpillis
Ahhh nice! I haven’t got my hands on any of the new models yet but I’ve got plenty of Oldhammer from my childhood that is begging to be rescued. The horrors look really fun to paint, like squigs! Nice, it’s great to practice new techniques or refine existing ones! I find most models benefit from various techniques depending on the sculpt.
This is awesome. Definitely agree with your fur/hair colour choice in the end. That red really ups the chaos. Glad I stumbled on you. Subbed instantly.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you found the breakdown useful. Like I said I’m pretty new to NMM and I’ll probably do another video on it at a later date when I’ve experimented some more 👨🏻🔬
Thank you so much! It was a bit daunting as it’s my first video. But I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁 and I’m already working on my second. I’d just like to say thank you for your support as it means a lot.
