Remember your first model will suck. Keep that model and keep painting. Very soon you will see how far you have come. It’s a great feeling. The hardest part for me was thinning the paints correctly. Great video!!!!

You’re completely right. It’s always amazing looking back at your older models and your latest one just to see how far you’ve progressed. Haha I know that feeling! And then when different brands react differently adds another learning curve 😂 but it’s all part of the fun.

Like another of the comments, I recently decided to pick up painting minis again after more than a decade and, having watched your painting skin video, I couldn't resist this one. I really like your straight forward and knowledgeable delivery and, of course, your painting style. Thank you. Subscribed )O(

Thank you so much! It’s amazing how many people are getting back into the hobby after seriously long extended breaks. Thank you for commenting and subscribing 🙌🏼

Nice video, I'm hoping to get back into painting minis after twenty-odd years and it's good to see a simple explanation that doesn't get intimidatingly detailed! Also, painting watercolours has taught me that using a mug for your water is a dangerous game...

Thanks! I wanted to try and make it accessible. That’s awesome! You won’t regret it, as I got back into the hobby after 20+ years too and it’s been all consuming since. Hahaha I know! There’s been a couple of close calls!

Great video! Super helpful tips, I like the focus on layering and patience - definitely helpful for beginners!

Thank you! I’m glad you think it’ll be helpful 😊 I feel not enough people talk about how important patience is and how it’s really all about practice instead of speed and trying to complete a model as fast as possible.

Really great job explaining your method on building the base! ty i have some new models primed and ready once I get a day off :) going to rewatch as I try my hand.

Thanks! Honestly, the easiest way to elevate your basing is to avoid uniformity and have variety. What models have you got primed?

Really nice video. This cleared a lot of things up for me, I was getting quite frustrated with some of the colouring. I was gifted Army Painter Speedpaints but I find they're a little too thin, even after arm-aching shaking of the bottle which I've seen people complain about with that brand. I have a question about primer since I don't see a lot of talk about it online - should I use a brighter primer like white if I'm painting something that's very bright like yellow for example? I bought ash gray primer and my colours like brighter/paler yellows are taking many many coats for the colour to stick. Thanks!

Thank you so much 😊 I personally haven’t used the army painter speed paints, but most of those paint ranges will be very thin no matter how much you shake them and the coverage depends on the colour as some are way more pigmented than others. So primers do make a massive difference to be honest and if you’re painting a model primarily yellow white will help you massively as the yellow will have better coverage. But I personally don’t like using just white as I basically use black for pretty much every model. This is because I like working from the shadows out to the highlights, if you know what I mean. But, if you’re going to be using speed paints exclusively it might be worth you trying zenithal highlighting. Which involves you priming the model in black all over and then white from directly above it establishes your shadows and highlights. If you then use your speed paints over that you’ll find it easier and you’ll see better results. And if you search “slap chop” you’ll see examples of people using that technique, unfortunately I haven’t got a video on it. And just so you know, yellow is a very tricky colour to use as it normally has less coverage than a lot of colours. So, you just need to take your time and build it up gradually to get your desired coverage. I hope that helps?

@@AcrylicSpillisThat's perfect. Thank you so much for that, I'll definitely try zenithal highlighting, and I'll look into slap chop as well. I had a feeling yellow might be one of those weird colours to get right. Thanks so much, that's given me a bit more motivation, it was becoming very deflating.

No worries! And yellow is definitely one of those colours so if you’ve just started I can understand why it probably feels quite deflating. But honestly, just keep preserving and it’ll all make sense 👍🏼

Love the outcome of that base in particular! What kind of cat litter do you use that has those rockier chunks? (Not a cat owner myself) the kind I have to hand is super absorbent and tends to puff up when glued/painted--though I'm sure that's desirable for its intended purpose :)

Thanks! You want to get the really cheap all clay variety. To get more variety I whizz it round a cheap coffee grinder for a few seconds. It expands a little when you glue it, but once it dries it pretty much returns back to normal. Hope that helps 👍🏼
