I don't have an F100 but I do have an F6 and it's a work of art. Shooting it is just like using a DSLR. It even works with Nikons CLS system and has a color matrix meter.
The lack of an orange to the film base should in theory make it easier to camera scan with NLP as it doesn't have to remove the orange mask. I believe lab scanners have an ability to adjust the RGB channels independently of the light being used to compensate for the orange mask whereas your home scan is just one light. Just a hunch I could be completely wrong.
Great video as always and beautiful captures! How do you get those clips where you’re zoomed into your photo and moving around to show the detail? I want to show the detail in my photos like that.
Thanks Brae - Your (home scanned) images are great! 100% the scanning makes a huge difference to this film and our lab are working on a new scanning setting document that will be available shortly. Interestingly it's similar to the comment at 4:04. There is a huge difference when they are home scanned on a flatbed or DSLR set up. - Our R&D department are busy working away on the next colour film and looking to the ones that will come after that in the future too. We have so many plans for the future and are excited about what comes next:).
Editing my 35mm photos I shot on Harman Phoenix as I'm watching your video & running into the same results you did on your 120 photos (I just mail my film to a lab and have them scan it). Good to hear I'm not alone with my results! Like you said, I'm also glad Harman is working on new stocks of film in this digital age.
thanks for including my comments brae!! I agree with your hot take, I personally have no idea what it takes to create a new film stock (and I absolutely love Harman doing this and introducing a new colour film), but labs shouldn’t have to change their process for this one stock. I did want to ask if you ever experimented with its exposure latitude? Does it help being under/over exposed?
Thanks for the comment. And yes I did a full exposure test on it. Best results seemed to be at 100 iso. Even one stop underexposed yielded some pretty bad images. I’d probably shoot it at 100 iso mostly but could go anywhere from 50 to 200 iso and still get decent results when home scanned.
Pretty much the conclusion i have come to having spoken to my lab too as i don’t scan myself. They are not stocking it and i have decided to wait for some improvements.
your results are amazing, i think its great that this film has a unique pleasing look when scanned correctly. a nice change from the neutral image you get from the pro color films
Im pretty sure the reason the labs are pushing out weird looking scans on this is cus they dont have scanner profiles for this film yet. It's got a lot of new characteristics, like the film base color. They has profiles for the preexisting stocks, like your portas. Pretty sure most labs are not going to take the one-at-time approach that you will with your own scans. I expect someone is working on a profile that will become more wide spread with time. I;m a little baffled by the "How much effort do the labs need to put in" there's like a grand total of 12 film stocks these days, yes, they can figure out how to scan a new one. I was floored by this line "it seems to me it may not be the labs that need to change their process but rather the film stock itself that needs to change" What are you saying?!?! You want to the ONE new color film we've gotten in decades (completely new film stock) to go back to the drawing board and rebuild their film so it's just like the other ones so you can use preexisting preset to scan?!?!?! That's wild dude, think about what you are asking for.
I think it’s more ridiculous to expect a company to come out with a brand new product and proceed to never make improvements on it. Why wouldn’t Harman want to hear customer feedback and use that to develop a better version of Phoenix in the future? If anything, I believe that sort of feedback is expected and appreciated. I’d encourage you to read some of the other comments on this video because it seems as though my experience is not an anomaly. Harman Photo has even said that they know this isn’t a perfect product, it’s experimental, and that they’re eager to hear the feedback from the community so that they can build a better version in the future. I don’t think that sharing my results and then encouraging Harman to make some changes is that outlandish.
@@BraeHunziker Let me start by apologizing, I popped off and it was very rude of me. I was not talking about the video in general or you giving feedback, I was reacting specifically of the framing that it is on Harmon to managing the lab's time and scan quality. "How much effort do the labs need to put in" The reality is, this falls to the lab providing the service to you, and they should source a new profile for the scanner. I was honestly surprised to just now realize noritsu is still in business, but had been thinking it might be more of an open source profile that get's developed and shared, or labs could develop one. I'm making assumptions here, as I've never dealt with commercial scanners, but have done a lot of my own scanning, calibrated monitors, and made profiles for printers, so i figure it should be something along those lines. If the issue is with the software not being able to make their own profile, they should be banging down the doors at noritsu. The way i see this is, we are all in this "keep analog photography alive" thing together, so Harmon developing a new film from scratch is a really big deal, and I get it's a capitalist endeavor, but it's also a thing where if the companies dont make money we don't get access to the things we love (one of the very few spaces I will defend for profit companies). It just feels like they're already doing a lot, and i don't feel pointing the blame on the scans back on them is fare. I want to be sensitive the labs time too in these regards. We're able to scan at home and correct the images just fine, so it's clearly very possible, it's just new, and everyone's software needs updating i guess. Again, sorry for being a dingus.
As someone who works in a lab with a Noritsu HS-1800 I appreciate this video. Just today I've spent about half an hour trying to figure out new settings for scanning Phoenix 200 - unfortunately no changes really delivered satisfying results. I love what Harman has done here, but the Scanning Parameters provided by them don't yield good results in our lab.
i love phoenix when home scanned might be one of my favorite film stocks. lab scans not so much but the home scans are so goood. beautiful colors very very unique color palette.
Well, all I can say is that when the 135 version came out, the guys posted samples as if they were just learning to cook for the first time. Now that the 200 version is on the market, things are much better and people are figuring out its temperament.
I almost feel like this film belongs in the lomography-esque category. Like- I want this to be the next big consumer grade film, but I think it’ll stay in that “weird” realm where I’ll only shoot it once in an eternity and just for the weird results you get. I’m mostly just here for where this thing goes long term.
My hot take: Sadly Phoenix seems like an unfinished/non-polished product. I haven't seen a single convincing sample of that film stock. Even with great light, compo and homescanning the look and feel is just always off and bring down any other good aspect of the photos taken with it.
Not a hot take at all. It’s a good attempt at a first color film, and hopefully they improve upon it and come out with an updated version in the future! Thanks for the feedback.
It may be a crazy idea, but could it be that Harman has launched the 120 format to finish off their current emulsion and a new one is on the way? Thanks for your honesty.
just found your channel today & love your video style! Any chance you’re using the osprey exos? Just bought the eja and am excited to bring it out soon!
Our styles of photography are extremely similar, yet I only found out about you today from my old history teacher. I find inspiration in your works and it's quite amazing how we naturally have similar touches to our photos. I cant wait to see more from you :)
Brooo, at some point on a shot of you at sunset, you can see like 10 mosquitoes circling your head - look I love the outdoors, but those mosquitoes are vicious lol how'd you survive that?? Great video! 🔥🔥
