BTMKTC is a great album but the best thing that ever happened was Josh leaving. Their musical progression wouldn’t have worked with his vocal style. Their rise to one of the most well paid mainstream metalcore bands in the world was due to Cory. I know this upsets the Memphis fans but that song was only going to take them so far.
“My The Chariot” 😂 I loved that first album, recorded Live, one of the most ruckus albums I’ve ever heard. I loved seeing Josh and these guys in Portland some time back mid-2000s
Its a shame this interview took place when it did. I feel like a lot of people would have much better questions. I can't believe no one asked any follow up when he opened it to the floor.
You have good taste 🤙. I still listen to Mepmphis Will Be Laid To Waste every other day because it's a solid song. But The Chariot will always be my favorite band though. Their live performance was AMAZING. 68' is decent, too
As someone that listened too, loved, and watched both bands live, I can say they were two very different experience's. Norma Jean was much more...."scene" if you will. Much more "Check all the boxes." The Chariot though.....that live show was a fucking life altering moment. It was family, It was violence, it was love and it was war. I miss it veeeery very much.
I do not believe they did. Dallas Taylor left Underoath right after their first album, and he's never rejected God. I haven't cared for their music since he left either. If you haven't heard them, listen to Underoath's first two EP's and their first album. Most people haven't heard Cries Of The Past EP, and it's one of the best pieces of metal music I think has ever been recorded.
Norma Jean Redeemer is a masterpiece but I think The Chariot has better albums as a whole. Josh has been in two great bands but moving to The Chariot was the best move ever. I wish they were still around.
The chariot was my end all be all band in 05'-06 and looking back now i ask myself why did this happen, how did religious metalcore have such an profound effect on me. I could never listen to this now its just so whatever, this music did not age well especially religious metalcore. belongs in the ground to be forgotten.
Jean was about the albums and merch and Chariot was about the experience and pushing the boundaries of whatever genre you wanted to put them in. Both good bands, but a wise man once said, A true artist knows when to stop. I think that is true of Josh and the Chariot but not Norma Jean. The Chariot's last show is indicative of that. Every single person in that room was screaming the last words with passion. It's hard to create a band like that.
If you're in the market for using fewer words, you could've just said: "Norma Jean is main stream and The Chariot is punk. I like both, but prefer The Chariot, due to their punk ethos." It's that easy. (My fav NJ albums are the oldies, so I obviously like The Chariot best because the sound is harsher, but I had to say something because your comment clearly tries to make a value judgment without making one about the two bands)
Norma jean weren’t “about the merch and albums “ when josh left in 02. They hadn’t even released bless the martyr. The passion and creativity was there but apparently not for josh. Only josh knows why he left. it remains a mystery to everyone else including his former band members.
Agree with you fully here! The last show the Chariot did in Chicago is still one of those moments I will never ever forget for the rest of my life. So much emotion.
Josh Scogin, and the first Norma Jean album, is the only reason I started listening to that style of metal. It was just constantly in your face, and Josh screams with the most passion I have ever heard someone scream. In fact, the passion is even more on Chariot songs!! But, glad '68 is a thing now!
The Chariot's first album was the only one I liked for many years. It was recorded in a live room with the band all together rather than 1 instrument at a time. the same way Norma Jean's first album was recorded.
This guy always stuck me as narcissistic. Especially through some of his lyrics but I like the Chariot. Doesn't every album have different members? Probably difficult to work with. Also, kind of glad he left. O' God the Aftermath was a watershed moment for Norma Jean and the new guy did THE perfect job. When I first discovered Norma Jean, Bless The Martyr was my favorite but each album got better and better (although I haven't heard the latest NJ album) and now I never go back to Bless The Martyr. The next 4 albums after that are just so much better.
Bless the Martyr is sooo different though... I like original NJ, Chariot and modern era NJ and I've been listening to them both since the beginning (LutiKriss), but you gotta admit, they're such different bands ... Bless the Martyr is absolutely incredible mathcore and post-Josh NJ is so much more sludgy. I personally still prefer BTM, maybe for nostalgia, but it's just heavier, crazier and more unique from my perspective..
@@standardbrah O God, The Aftermath is a blatant rip-off of Botch. The main style of the entire album is Botch's sound and style. It's my least favorite NJ album. Redeemer & Meridional are the best after Bless The Child.
Leisure Muffin Super cereal? Josh made a great artistic choice. Norma Jean barey did anything remotely worthwhile after Josh left. Meanwhile, The Chariot amassed a dedicated following and performed some of the most passionate live performances that I've seen.
+Christina Mast // This can't be serious? Really? "Norma Jean barely did anything remotely worthwhile after Josh left"? I can appreciate that other have different musical tastes, but this is just not at all a true comment in any way, shape, or form. Norma Jean, after Josh left, is a better, more complete band, making album after album of incredible music. And have you seen Norma Jean? I will give you that The Chariot has fun shows, but they did not even compare to Norma Jean live.
