3:57 I agree with your statement. That is how I try to think about brand deals. I've also learned to walk away from offers that are below my standard fees.
Although I have already bought the M2, I like to watch further reviews what others say about them. And to be honest, your "review" and almost existential crisis was a bit of fresh air between all the sponsored reviews :D Very entertaining to watch, thank you Kaya!
Thank you so much for this video Kaya! It is really exhausting to have brands only willing to send the product in exchange for the content creation. I started receiving many of these proposals, but usually, they don't want to sponsor. I mean, products don't pay bills 😅
Products definitely don't pay bills! I think you have a FANTASTIC brand with a super dialled in and valuable audience, so for you it might just be more about learning how to probably articulate that value to brands so that they'll WANT to pay you!
before i pay for your course, can you confirm or deny that body size has something to do with it? i have a noticeable niche, over 45k subs, engaged audience and i make a fair amount from amazon affiliate. ive received one brand deal where they ghosted me after the first spot, never replied to me about how it went, paid me 60 days late, and then pther people who reach out who only want to pay low amounts like $400 -- is that normal? i think the only thing that makes me different from other creators in my niche is im not thin. and im not on socials -- just YT. i am more than happy to pay for a course if it can help me but i seem to think its bc im not on instagram or tiktok and im overweight. lmk your honest thoughts?
Thanks for the question, I’m sorry you’ve had such a bad experience with a sponsor! Late payment is unfortunately more common than we’d like, but not cool for it to happen, or for them to ghost you! I think upfront this isn’t the option for you *right now*, definitely not because of size but because you aren’t on socials-my advice, though applicable to multiple platforms, leans very much towards instagram brand deals, where I find brands are much more readily throwing money. You might not get your money’s worth if you’re only on YT. Would you be open to creating there in addition to your RU-vid? Definitely understand if not! I think the question of looks is a real problem in a very shallow industry, but it’s not the make or break for making it. I know people of all sizes absolutely killing it as influencers with brand deals, even in spaces that traditionally favour a different beauty standard, so no matter what you choose, as you continue in this space, I hope you aren’t disheartened. 💜
@@CreatingwithKaya thank you for your kind and thoughtful response, I appreciate it. I just haven’t posted on instagram or tiktok because the audience is really aggressive. I had one in the past but I’m not sure how to maintain or grow it. Especially with all the negativity. It might be different nowadays but I’m not sure. It’s just a whole different landscape.
@@user-nlvmruu I definitely do find social media can be a lot more ruthless--ESPECIALLY when something does well, it seems to automatically bring in so much hate. If you can operate without it then it's probably a better path for mental health--but I do find that brands pay more for arguably less effort content. It's shorter and often less time-consuming to create, and they can boost it/pay to use it as ads to gain more awareness long term. With RU-vid it's a bit trickier because their investment has to basically hit on that one video or its done. There are fewer ways for them to get more eyes on the content/reuse it. May I ask what your niche is?
@@CreatingwithKayayeah mental health wise YT is so much better. But sadly my audience is older so brands don’t like that. so it’s like you can’t win. i assume insta and tiktok are paid more bc younger audiences but they’re more ruthless and toxic :( are you getting paid for instagram + YT partnerships as one deal? or do you get contacted directly from instagram for an instagram deal? I’m in the interior design / diy niche
Hmm, all ages have brands that want to market to them, and often brands that target older demographics have bigger budgets because those demographic have more disposable income-that being said some brands that target older demos may be newer to influencer marketing, or may even be putting in money for creators on fb where their audience might be. All my deals come in through my email, but I’d say 90% of the time they found me on IG and they want only IG content. I have to do the work to counter them if I want to do something across more platforms. I think there’s a lot of potential for your niche on social media if you’re up for it, but otherwise maybe consider working on pitching brands for quality RU-vid deals if they aren’t reaching out /finding you.
Someone like you - behaving naturally in an approachable manner and giving the impression that your reviews will be from an honest, relatable perspective - I love watching. However, I’m just tired of seeing female influencers using their bodies to catch likes, wearing the same super contour makeup so that they’re indistinguishable from each other, and speaking in hyperbole about the virtues of whatever they’re hawking. They give off this greasy vibe like those girls bars pay to sit with patrons and flatter them in order to get them to buy more drinks.
The best way to start getting a brand's attention is to be posting online, and if you want them to keep sending, then once you receive it, it's ideal to keep posting.

Thank you so much for this! I am smallish--20k on Tiktok and have JUST started getting brand deals, but I don't know what is fair, and I worry about being exploited. I found your take on explaining these issues even-handed, research driven (I was a professor for many years teaching research about influencer marketing, ironically), and I just wanted you to know your content was really helpful to me and reminds me of the ethical way I try to cover issues, as well, seeing all sides, and presenting it in a non sensational way

Thank you for this video - is really interesting to see how RU-vid actually could be also a passive source of income , as you said, maybe with 40 viral videos ,100k subs ,1000$ passively minimum for few months not posting is great aswell , imagine with 1 million and so on...but overall RU-vid is like a regular business in the end, some kind of continuous input is needed in order to continue growing
Yess this is exactly it, I think most content creation avenues we have to remember are just businesses. You can't just go to sleep forever and hope it works out--things will slip eventually, even if you have pretty good systems in place.

LOVED THIS! totally relate to everything you said about research spirals and trying to work out if I really need something or not. It's hard for me to spend money so I research A LOT before purchasing anything. I think in this case with the mic I definitely do need one as I'm editing a video now that I filmed using the camera's internal mic and it sounds pretty terrible, even with adobe audio enhancer!! Anyway, I've been going back and forth between a bunch of different mics and I'm seriously considering this M2 one after watching your video!
You got this!! It really is so hard to pull the trigger on a financial decision. I definitely recommend the M2 though--it's been MONTHS and it's the one purchase I've made that has truly without a doubt made me create MORE.
I found myself telling someone recently about how i've been uploading videos since 2010 (most of them private now because I don't want any copyright issues lol - those were different times lol) But whenever I finally gained some momentum, life would happen so I would slow down and it would take forever to get back on the proverbial horse. 10 years later I'm still having the same struggle but I love creating content so much so I can't stop 😅
If you love it, keep at it!! Honestly breaks are so important, even if they are years-long. There's nothing wrong with returning here and there as you see fit. The only tricky part is when we want it to be a big income source--that's where the consistency is sorta needed 😂
Oh, if you type the hashtag format, it should still show. But hashtags aren't really that useful in Pinterest as they are on other platforms and they keep going back and forth on whether or not they are clickable. I don't use them, personally. (Or do you mean the newer 'tag' feature on Pinterest)
The M2 is definitely a great little thing, but if the area is windy you will *definitely* hear it, with or without noise cancelling. I'm not sure twirling around will cover the same scenario lol. The only other con I'd say is not being able to split the audio when using two mics through USB-C, as you will end up with a 'merged' audio stereo track. Although you can circumvent this issue by using the TRS cable or TRS -> USB-C cable.
hahaha you are right in that twirling probably doesn't do it justice 😂 Oh that is very true about the splitting--I don't really have that use case for mobile (so far), so it hasn't come up, but that's smart about the TRS to USB-C!
