The reason why Dinosaur language sounds off is because real world languages have an accompanying accent that goes with them. Dinosaur language is a foreign language with an english accent, which immediately makes it sound unconvincing and fake. It's like when you have a friend that speaks Spanish but only with their deep American accent.

Ooohhh, that's an incredibly interesting perspective. I never considered that. Perhaps thats why it feels like "reading a script" is because of that disconnect. Interesting point.

Looking at the Dinosaur Planet demo I'm going "What was Miyamoto thinking?" Just because Krystal was a fox, he wanted it linked to Star Fox? What a mess. I would have played the heck out of their initial draft of the game. I loved this game when it came out and a lot of it was due to how fun it was to play, though I could tell straight away that this was not a good Star Fox game. I was and still am a bit like you, standing at that fork in the road and seeing both sides of the argument. I had a lot of trouble completing the game as a kid because of all the backtracking, I would get bored and walk away from the game. My favorite thing to do was swimming and using the staff tricks to do all sorts of weird shit, I don't actually have a firm memory of facing Andross so I wonder if I even completed the game. I was probably 11 years old when this came out so its possible I didn't. Nonetheless I do think that its beautiful graphically, I found the gameplay a lot of fun and really inventive. Rare also did a really good job of animating Fox's face so that he's recognizable but still able to communicate through facial expressions. That's not a small feat so they deserve credit for that. SFA is strapped somewhere in the Mediocre Valley. Not good enough to be great but not bad enough to be interesting. Poor Rareware.

This is a great summation on feelings I find myself very in tune with. There is some good news though, for something at least a bit fun. The Dinosaur Planet prototype has been completed from the disc that was found, so all available content made at that time is now playable in it's, probably, pre-alpha state. I'll definitely be coming back to play through it. I wanted to share that it's available in case you were interested in trying it out yourself.

Well I will be here defending the mech and shooting styles in SA2 as well as the Werehog from unleashed as I LOVE these styles of gameplay: So the mech shooting in SA2 is wonderfully designed around chaining enemy targets and pullling off those high scores and as a result of the ranking system the gameplay has some HUGE amounts of skill ceilling making level mastery a heck ton of fun The treasure hunting gameplay is also fantastic because on how the levels need you to memorise every place the emeralds could possibly show up and using that smooth as butter movement to gte them as fast as possible which because of the scoring system that you have tied to it can make the A ranks super fun to get And finally the werehog in unleashed has a fantastic combat where you have to think about your every move in the werehog's huge moveset to beat enemies quickly and with great style bonuses like getting bonus score for maintaining yor combo number, and risk and reward based QTEs attacks and the plataforming as also as good as the combat taking advantage of the werehog's strechy arms and physics to speed through them with enough skill and also taking advantage of the werehog's air combos to skillfully skip sections also feels amazing and all of this to make the S rank one of the most satisfacting experiences ever
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 8 дней назад
I've got no beef with the treasure hunting levels. Id even be fine with Werehog though I can't connect with the excitement you share in your examples. The Tails and Eggman SA2 levels though, even having full ranked that game, I'd be stoked if I never touch them again in my life. B, spin, release, repeat became the optimal strategy for me to get the scores I needed for rank

9 year old me was so duped by this game... Star Fox was my favorite game, so when my parents happened to take me to a Bust Buy and I saw "Star Fox" on the front, I didn't need any other info and begged my parents to get it for me. I ended up having fun with it as a kid, but replaying it a year or so ago was rough.

11:48 speak for yourself, Nintendo fanboys always follow trends, its disappointing, if a couple Nintendo fanboys don't like something, they all don't like it 14:08 literally nobody thought that, when i first played this game i loved that first sequence, it's like you read game informer and then just regurgitated what you read, even if i did draw the connection; when this game came out i was 10, with that being said it would have only been a couple yrs prior I beat 64 and adventures, i remember seeing Andrew and thinking how cool it was things came full circle, of course with a modern lense it doesn't seem all that cool because games and movies are doing that all the time now so it's not fresh, the new enemy types i remember being cool as well, edit edit: i understand this is a video and this is commentary and don't get me wrong it's good, entertaining commentary lol but the kid in me wants to have playground arguments over video games, also...you seem like an incredibly likeable person to kick it n play some games with, keep it up edit edit edit: i kept thinking what i remember thinking the cities looked like; its dbz, the cities look like the ones from dragonball z

I loved the video, however the “issue” you mentioned about progression after getting the power bomb I disagree with, The point is basically to let the player go back into old areas and soak up secrets as they can finally explore Brinstar and Cratieria again, it’s basically the end game item hunt, before all the linear end game areas like The WS and Maridia. Players will probably remember the places in brinstar with areas they can now visit especially, which is great because that’s where they learn the wall jump and shinesoark, then, as the player makes their way back to norfair they begin trying to actually find the way forward, which they know is most likely here since they already exported everywhere else. Idk I feel like that was a genius move and not a problem but it’s just my opinion. Also uh, the Norfair Map room you can find at the top of norfair, BEHIND A POWER BOMB DOOR, shows you that there is something over there anyways… Also side note I kinda love SMs map, it definitely feels like it’s just a reminder but you have to remember things, and the map rooms just give you clues, but yeah I will admit doors would be nice, maybe even just seeing how rooms connect would be great, but like… marking blockages… eh… kinda takes agency away from the player
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 23 дня назад
Maybe blockages is too much overall. Though on the flip side games like Animal Well can prove that "knowing" there's still something in a room but not knowing what allows for the player to have choice in if they care and how much. Though overall I think id agree that doing it via the level design and less UI is ideal. Forces you into immersing into the world which is absolutely Super Metroids greatest strength with its level design. I like to spitball ideas, some of which I don't know if I even like in the moment. Mostly because I hate calling things about a game "perfect" so I always want to theory craft what could be better. Though SMs level design is pretty damn close

Ive adapted Nintendo's old NES/SNES rule of video games; 30 minutes. A video game has 30 minutes to hook me and if in 30 minutes I'm not having fun, I'm dropping the game. I realize I have less patience than most people but it literally took me a whole ass year to beat Tears of the Kingdom. I don't have time to have a "backlog" of games I *need* to play. I don't *need* to do anything other than have fun playing a video game. What especially gets on my nerves is the incessant need to have hour long tutorials in video games. Like shut up, I know how to move a character and the camera, no need to make a training grounds or a VR mission to teach me this. Be more like RE4 R or Elden Ring; have a quick 5 minute cutscene telling you what's going on and by the 30 minute mark, you're out in the meat of the game, learning as you play. If you gotta say "the game doesn't get good til the so-and-so hour mark." I'm not gonna play it. The game should be good from beginning to end, period. And if it's a game that has definitely peaked my interest but have no desire to play it because it's not instantly fun, I'll watch a video about it. I feel like that's way more satisfying than forcing myself to play it. I'll get to know what the game is about and won't feel like I'm missing out.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi Месяц назад
@miguelb5661 I actually think you're discussing a design philosophy I very much agree with. Many new titles have complex systems and mechanics but they feel the need to frontload it all, thus pushing the "actual game" back a few hours when it doesn't need to. If a game is to have complexity on a large scale, the systems should roll out to thr player over time without the need for hyper tutorialization all up front.
@miguelb5661
@miguelb5661 Месяц назад
@@Zerbraxi yeah. I don't like being so front loaded with information up front when playing a video game. I think that's why BotW was a breath of fresh air, no pun intended. You get a short cutscene at the beginning and you're steadily introduced to the game's mechanics in the opening plateau. By the time I was jumping off the plateau I realized oh snap, that whole area was just the tutorial! I thought I was playing the real game already. Nice! More games should do that instead of dumping a bunch of text at the beginning of the game explaining everything all at once
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi Месяц назад
@@miguelb5661 Something for designers to remember is that "games" are quite literally our biological desire to learn. Granted less for survival nowadays and more for entertainment, but learn best through play. Teach us through playing and we'll always prefer that, every single time.
