Nice video, brings back memories as I served on her in 78-79 as an E5 electronics tech spending most of my time either in the ET shop on 01 level port side aft or 03 level in the radar transmitter room, radio communications room or CIC. I was a diver for a few years beginning in 1995 but never made it to the Speigel Grove, the sinking kept getting delayed and I was no longer into diving by the time she was down but enjoy watching all the dive videos on youtube.

John, how can you be absolutely sure this is the Golden Fleece? I just finished the book and watched this video. Amazing, all of it. But, there was no iron clad proof this was indeed Bannister's ship.

@TheDivingmuseum Год назад
Hi there! I forwarded this question to John, who provided the following answer: This is a very good question! Aside from the artifacts that were recovered and the general 17th Century appearance of the wreck, there is specific archival and physical evidence that led us to believe that this wreck was undoubtedly the Golden Fleece. What we learned from the wreck, matched the detailed historical record perfectly. We were drawn to the exact location of the site, from a magnetometer survey we performed. After the battle in 1687, the British returned to the site a few weeks later to locate any remaining pirates, and to recover the cannons, and anchors they might have left behind. These were of significant value and removed, meaning that would not find these items on the wreck, which we ultimately did not, and it would be much harder to locate the wreck utilizing a magnetometer survey. We could not expect anything large to show up on the mag survey, but we did get several small hits we identified upon diving the hits as firelocks, which looked like pipes. The stocks, and steel trigger components were mostly lost to time, but we had the barrels and brass butt plates remaining. When Captain, later Sir, William Phips went looking for the wreck of the Spanish Galleon Concepción, in 1687, it was only months after the sinking of the Golden Fleece, he noted in the log of his ship the James and Mary, that he had visited the site of the recent battle, and found the wreck of the Golden Fleece in 24 feet of water. He could look down into the water and see firelocks laying on the main deck of the wreck, "where the pirates had dropped them". He also noted that if he did not find the Concepción, he planned to return to the pirate wreck, and salvage what he could before returning home. Of course Phips did find Concepción, and never returned to Samaná. What we found more than 300 years later, in 24 feet of water, on top of the wreckage, was a half dozen or so, firelocks as described by Phips in 1687. From the Taylor Manuscript at the National Library of Jamaica, there is a first person drawing of the battle, made by Englishman John Taylor and included in his manuscript on Colonial life. He claimed to have witnessed the battle. This can easily be found in late historian David Buisseret’s book, Jamaica in 1687, along with analysis of the drawing and Taylor’s personal notes on the battle. The drawing depicts the area’s geographical features that we can easily identify today as Cayo Vigia, Pigeon Island, and Punta Gorda. John Taylor also places all of the participant ships, as well as the Golden Fleece on his drawing, Where we eventually located the wreck, is exactly where Taylor drew it in 1687. The wreck is adjacent to the island of Cayo Vigia, and in the heavily overgrown area above the wreck we easily located dozens of cannon balls, some of them marked with the English Broad Arrow, identifying them as English cannon balls. As the wreck was excavated, more cannon balls were found in the water, as well as some tools of the trade for pirates, including a broadax, pistols, and a sword. At the end of the two day battle, the British retreated, and the Golden Fleece suddenly exploded and caught fire. On the wreck, we found the wooden components of the hull on the periphery of the wreck to be charred, as one might expect. I hope this answers your question. JC

I’m reading this book about this (Pirate Hunter’s) and just checked utube to see if there were any documentaries about “The Golden Fleece” because I’ve become very interested in this too. The book is wonderful and very exciting with many more details than the video. Bannister sounds like a real card, he bribed himself out of jail the second time when his ship had been de-masted & his crew got it ready “quietly” , he snuck onboard and off they went & weren’t seen until the second fort…..they nearly made it!!😢

You are a remarkable lady, Ms. Heinerth, I admire all the various places you've been to and by extension allow us to join you there! I would love to see more videos from you, but no doubt you're already overwhelmed with oxygen tanks, photo equipment, etc., We're such an impatient society, we like to have everything NOW, and moving rapidly. You can miss a lot that way, however. I really wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your presentation, especially the Holograms caught my attention. It's great that you can now leave the objects in situ yet bring back images allowing specialists to study every aspect of them. I just feel sorry for the little creatures, once you bring them up, they give up their freedom and no doubt get subjected to much which may shorten their life span. I can't believe they can live up to 200 years down below, that's phenomenal! There is so much still to learn about our planet! You do go down into mother earth's "blood circulation", so to speak. I hope we find out how we can heal our fascinating "home" and continue to live here, studying it. So many others are in a hurry to go to Mars and other places. If we spent a fraction of the money we use for many other things which aren't even healthy, we could do so much good right here! Best regards to you! Please stay healthy, going to such depths, as well as flying from place to place, surely puts a strain on your body. I hope more people start to watch your program!

On the Beebe side of family? I am relation of some sort, trying to figure it out. All I know is my Grandmother's maiden name was Helen Beebe. She gave me several children's books he had written a long time ago that I never paid much attention to until recently with the Titan tragedy. So I've started researching him. Such an exciting life he lived!!!

Charles William Beebe had no children and was an only child as far as I could find in all my research. Now I'm not saying you are lying. I was told he was my great grandfather but when I researched his biography it says nothing about having children with the two women he married. If you can find anything to the contrary I would love to hear about it. Respectfully David Beebe

I've done some research into the Beebe name and read that all persons with this last name can be connected to one man that came to the states back in 1650. I always take this kind of info with a grain of salt but find it all very interesting to read about. If you ever get the time it's very cool to follow. The name is very rare and goes back a long way.

What I never understood when reading the book was why the name “Cayo Levantado” was considered solid evidence of a careening place when it only translates to “raised key.” That could very well and probably likely refers to its visibly within the bay.

Great interview! Excellent resources! I am so glad I found out about DWP. I can’t wait to share this with some of my elementary students. This is Human history that must be shared. So proud of this group and I thank you for allowing an interview on a topic that many don’t want to address. Excellent points made that they didn’t go into West Africa to capture slaves. They came in after a particular tribe/people -Judah. Thus one of the ships named Whydah. They wanted those who had built treasured cities thus why DC and America i.e. Vegas looks so much like Egypt where we we held slaves. They wanted the smartest and the ones with skills they did not have. This history is so deep and I tell our children that it is nothing to be ashamed of because we are survivors of the most horrific act in human history. That spells strength, hope, and determination. Excellent program! DWP, keep up the good work!

Let’s convince UNESCO. Jordan has another monument. It will be as important as Petra or even more. There are interesting ruins and reliefs on the Black Desert, dated 8,500 years old. They can only be seen from planes, drones, satellites and helicopters. Archaeologists don't exactly know nowadays what they represent. These ruins really represent embryos of several species in different stages of development and will be able to shed light on the origin of the human being and our planet. When it will be officially confirmed by biologists, this discovery will be a delight for the eyes, shed light to the origin of humanity. Activate the subtitles in English: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rikVfTbX2Mo.html It contains the documentation with the Jordanian authorities about this scientific and archaeological discovery.
