★ Salut RU-vid ★ Ça va? Thanks for stopping by! I’m Rosie, a New Zealander living as an Expat in France: conqueror of French administration, culture-shock junkie and (very) slowly learning how to hack life in France.
I’m here to share stories, tips and insights on life in Paris and navigating the French culture. I also love to make videos about New Zealand, Travel, Language Learning, Cross-Cultural relationships and other feel-good topics.
Being an expat in Paris is never easy but I studied here, hustled hard, got those visas, married a Frenchman, and lo and behold I'm still here 5 years later working for a French multinational in Paris (#CorporateLife).

So if Claude Moet was Dutch, moet would be pronounced like the English “moot” (point) oe sounds like ooooh. Like in moot from moot point. But shorter ooooh sound. He did in fact made it sound more French by adding the trema. Probably as the French did that when trying to pronounce his name. Same with Citroen. Andre Citroen (lemon, citron) was Dutch as well, we pronounce Citroen like citron, but then again with the oooh from moot point. Here again the French probably said Citro-en too him, so he added the trema. They do the same with my name. Siepmann, aaaah Si-ep maaahhhn.
I feel like when foreign brands set up offices in other countries, these other countries legitimize the mispronunciations. If these other offices pronounce the original names differently (because they are in different countries), then the new incorrect pronunciations become legitimate for the country they are in.
That growling hhhhrrr, I really hate hate hate it!! Especially when I ask a favor to my husband and he does it and Rolling his eyes... it is a sign of being annoyed. I hate it.
This is fabulous! Thanks for this vid! I'm writing a sequel to my book that features Ernest Rutherford and his daughter, so I'll be slipping in some of these into his dialog (era-appropriate!). Cheers!
Thanks for this video! one quick question. My french partner and I (nonEU) live in Australia. Can we apply for this from outside of France? Also, it is not clear to me if PACS can lead to a citizenship for a partner. In case we eventually need to move to Europe. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge
I know this is an older video. That was very enlightening, thank you very much 🙏🏼 So many options and possibilities. With these recommendations how does that affect you if you're from the US on a long stay Visa?? Cheers 💖 Can you do an updated one please,😊 with new information you've learned in more recent years.
Thing is that you pronounce them like people around pronounces them to be understood. Try to pronounce a few finnish brands like Marimekko or Nokia. Every non- finnish speaker mis-pronounces them, but are understood.
Unless owning a water well, everybody has to pay for water in France. And bidets were quite outdated until Covid 19, they seem to make their come back nowdays due to toilet paper war in 2020 😊
All the things I loved picking up by living around the French. I enjoyed predicting each one as you gave an explanation first, then the sound. I think my favorite is "bof"
You all don’t want to hear the bad stuff that happened to me in the US … made me a very cautious woman … the world is dangerous… in most countries or big cities. Medical system is not that great either.
I heard that in addition to the question "should I have a kid" you can ask "do I want to be a parent?", hopefully that will give you some clarity. I grew up very emotionally neglected as a child, had many responsibilities with my family in my 20's, I only started getting to know who I truly am and living for myself in my early 30's. I started my healing journey (to heal my body and inner child) when I was 36. When I was 37, I panic (because I am getting older) so I tried for a kid, got pregnant, and had a miscarriage. When I was pregnant, I felt so much love and joy, but also so much fear and anxiety. For me the fear and anxiety were bigger than the love and joy. So I think the experience of being pregnant and having a kid is only worth it if the love and joy are bigger than any other emotion. Now at 38, I decided to focus on taking better care of myself and healing my inner child, as this seems to be a priority and my life purpose. Sometimes my decision gets swayed because people would pressuring me into having a kid. But if I sit in meditation and ask myself what I really want at this moment, the answer is "rest, care, love", the answer is not "a kid". I would say for anyone who wants a kid, once you found the right partner, then start trying early. For anyone who decided not to have kid, you can check out this RU-vid channel Wife Without Kids. I think this topic should be discussed more openly so women can make the right decision without feeling shamed or pressured.
Bonjour! Excellent video. Your activism resonates with me. We are retired educators from Portland. We just finished a long stay in Europe: 5 months helping a new school open in Lvivv, one month in Krakow learning about WWII, and a month in Tallinn. We look forward to moving to France, probably Toulon, after we sell our Portland condo. We appreciate the French healthcare system. Merci beaucoup! Dean & Cindy
