As a Czech from Prague having some experience living in France I suppose that searching for the right word might be simply the sign that the French, even it might not seem to be the issue, are prone to feel much more under stress and pressure when they get in the spotlight while the English speaking people don't. Under pressure the brain activity slows down. Once you mentioned that your school system allow kids to be who they are - the kids. While, to me, the French system tries to beat this out of them as soon as possible intentionally to make them scared, well behaved sheep. I, personally, would die in the French school system. Czech school system is very similar and we share much more culturally, like the queueing issue you described - hilarious, but we are not as tough as the French who start the formation even two years prior to ours, it's sheer hell to me and I really sympathise with the little ones. However, Czech education influenced me so deeply that I hated studying until I graduated from law school and I've been working all my life on forgetting all the non-functional rubbish I was taught and becoming once again a happy, free, courageous, thriving person. Anyway, I very much enjoyed this episode, laughed a lot with you, very nice 🌸

04:29 Sometimes, a frenchie knows there is an exact perfect word to express what he wants to say, but can't remember it, cause it is not common vocabulary. Or sometimes, it's to find the best diplomatic way to say something that could be offensive if said just like that.

It's a habit I picked up during my first lockdown in 2020, funnily enough. I feel like I've eaten less for lunch (except when I had to have a big one when I worked in a supermarket to fit around break schedules), and dinner is the most important meal of my day, so in that awkward time between 5pm-7pm, I have to eat something.

This was super helpful for me!! I was in France my 18th year, and didn't realize now 50 years later that my searching for a word was a French thing. I remember the clothing (uniform) thing which I tried when I came back but was too hard to do and then 20 years ago I was in a cercle francais of francophones locally including French engineers here working for John Deere and noticed their style which I tried again. I am going to give it some thought now. The line thing, I still do, even though it is something I am sure looks fairly rude here. Thanks so much! Merci. Veuillez croire en mes respectueux sentiments. (I still love those formules de politesses!)
@mgparis

No, we never have to think about the gender of the word, unless it's a notoriously tricky one like "orbite" or "pétale", but even then, we would just say one or the other, and then say something like "au fait, c'est le ou la.... , je sais jamais ?" :)

7:14 I drop that right away if and when I write emails, unless if it's for work or cover letters. I'm not sure about Chinese emails, but for letters, I'm quite old-fashioned, and I overdid the polite terms to the point of... almost being insincere and uptight.
@BrockMak
@BrockMak 2 года назад
5:14 I still do that when I speak Cantonese or Mandarin. That's because any field of science was taught in English when I was still in primary school, and I immigrated in NZ for intermediate school, so I still have to search for words to do with chemicals or drugs. It's easier now with Wikipedia and Google, but before the internet, I end up getting stuck. Otherwise: I don't do that as often if I am speaking in Cantonese or Mandarin. But if I do, it means I don't use the vocabulary as often in the two languages because I use English most of the time.

15:55 If anything, I've ramped it up even more. Yes, HK is objectively hotter, but there are air conditioners for that. In Auckland, I can turn on the fan and still feel warm, and summers feel longer now than when I first came here 25 years ago, also a drought year. On the other end of the scale: I stopped using electric blankets.

Loved this! I remember when I moved to New York from California that one day I walked out at the beginning of fall and looked down fifth Avenue and saw all of these women hailing cabs with the same hairdo and exactly the same clothes and shoes! It was so funny to me at the time. And I remember thinking that oh, back home we wear our clothes kind of until they’re worn out, but here they have the seasonal thing and it’s called fashion. I was kind of snarky about all that but then after a while I joined those women on fifth Avenue wearing the same outfits with the same hairdos And the same make up! Eventually I move back to California which I think is a lot like New Zealand in terms of being casual and I went back to my old comfy habits of wearing what I liked. I am moving to France this year and I’m actually A little concerned about becoming a sheep again.

After 2 years in Australia, years ago, I quickly lost the accent back in France. Don't worry, it comes back in a blur after 10 minutes off thee planet in Sydney. Lost the genuinely relaxed and friendly attitude of Aussies towards strangers. Admittedly it's hard to keep when living in Paris. And going back, I realised that even the Assies seem hostile compared to the open, trusting, smiling and friendly attitude of Kiwis. Next place to move !

OMG I could use a whole video on the "formules de politesse"....I'm really good at casual spoken French but my formal French needs work. I do NOT know how to dance that dance. My partner and I are buying an apartment in France right now and I've been emailing with the notaire. He always signs with one of those "formules" and I have no idea how to do that! I'm always worried I've struck too informal of a tone.

The notaire or the clerk in charge of your file uses these formules because this is usual and how we've been taught to write (I work in a notarial office 😉), but don't worry you're not supposed to reply the same way. You're not expected to. Not even the French are. People end up saying hi to me in their emails and I don't find it disrespectful at all !

Hey Rosie, where were you at in France though? I am down South of France it is slightly different here & more relaxed. If I know the person I'm emailing at work no "formule de politesse" required but mind you mine is automatically signed with "Bien Cordialement" Around here you can see bright colors on clothes, hair & nails it's nice especially during winter 😊. Haha at "apéros" I am still not used to that. & I'm m just glad no more "bises" thanks to Covid. I definitely miss how polite & considerate people are from back home. Not sure if you ever experienced it here but in NZ when we know we've made a mistake we apologize that's never gonna happen here whether it's customer service or at daycare wherever really well that's my personal experience.

Just curious with the doctor thing: what do you do in new zealand, if you are too sick to work? In germany you usually will have to give a doctors note to your employer after two days or so. I guess it is similar in France. But when it costs 50 dollars in new zealand, it would be quite pricey to do so?
@ruthlloyd1163
@ruthlloyd1163 2 года назад
In the US we don’t usually require a doctors note unless you’re out on disability. A few days of cold or flu is just accepted as normal sick days. A doctor visit in urgent care without insurance can run $250.
@Sophieetta0627
@Sophieetta0627 2 года назад
In New Zealand, it’s typically 3 days off work before you have to give a doctors note, but your office may not ask for one. General practice doctors are smaller clinics so prices vary a lot, and may be cheaper in low socioeconomic areas, near universities or if you have a very low income you have a card that means it will cost a lot less. If you are very sick the hospital is always free. Doctors are free for children 13 and under. Any costs associated with an “accident” including sport injuries etc are always free. Prescriptions also almost always cost $5 for literally anything.

Interesting. I'm Canadian and there is no fee at all for a doctor's visit (we just show our provincial Health Card which is basically our proof of insurance) but I have NEVER gone to the doctor for "the slightest thing" and I don't think we do that as a culture either, perhaps because there is the sense that we all fund the healthcare through our taxes so it would be a waste of taxpayers' money to use resources frivolously. This kind of tracks with what I understand of French vs Canadian cultural mentality, very "every man for himself" French ("I have a cough so need to see the doctor") vs stereotypically polite and community-minded Canadian ("I have a cough but others will need to see the doctor more"). Who knows, maybe in Quebec (aka French Canada) they are more greedy with the doctor's appointments! XD

14:05 I've lost the ability to cut a queue when I came to NZ, not because we don't queue in HK, it was more to do with me, being short in primary school. I often associated with the line you are in at school in a class. You only ever let people shorter than you in front of you. It was the only reason I liked being short, because if you are the tallest person, you are going to the back, even if you can't see the notice board.

It’s quite common for most people in most other countries to take their time to think of the words that they want to say. Not being able to speak fast using the right words is not an indication of low IQ or low educational status. If you compare the average Joe-Six-Pack in the US to the average Kiwi bloke in NZ with their English speaking abilities, the American definitely needs more time to think in order come up with the right words just like the French. And, using wrong grammar in a casual setting when speaking is acceptable in the US and not an indication of low social status.
@aimemaggie

I took it more that french speakers don't talk in circles when they don't know what to say. I feel like english speakers try to explain what they're thinking whereas french speakers just make that uhhh sound. I'd say Obama is a good example of this in english. When he doesn't know what to say, he doesn't use filler words.
