We compare games for Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Some games were very similar. Some games were very different. Usually one was better . This series focuses on two rivals who compare and contrast any differences. Throw in some added humor and you have our Console Wars!
We're always looking for ideas for future episodes. Feel free to tell us what games we should compare next.
I know there isn't a big audience for this but only 66.5k subs? This is at least a 100k channel at least, keep up the good work boys, i just started watching and i love this
Okay, first of all, Dan: HOW DARE YOU TRASH HUMAN CANNONBALL?! THAT EVENT WAS MY FAVORITE FROM THE WHOLE ENTIRE SHOW! THAT EVENT MADE MALIBU'S CAREER! YOU DAN OWE EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN GLADIATOR FAN AN APOLOGY! Sorry for that outburst I had (just playing with you, in case you didn't notice), but I rather prefer an American Gladiators game with ALL the events included. Leaving one event out is just plain weird. It's like "Double Dare" without no physical challenges, or "Nickelodeon GUTS" with no Aggro Crag. It don't make no sense. LOL
Nicely done. But to be fair you have to take into account that Super Turrican was the first console rendition of the Turrican series and Mega Turrican the last one. Also Mega Turrican has double the Rom size so we could put more graphics in it.
The genesis had a better sound driver than the Nintendo... Doubt me? Check contra for Nintendo and contra for Sega. Even this mortal kombat the sound on snes tend to be a little muffled compared to sega genesis.
I like this video because it shows the shoddy video output of the snes coax cable. Wait, what?! It won on Gameplay!?!?!!? Also every other category. OK.
If there's one thing I agree on in this episode it's that the Disco tune in sor3 would have been improved by just leaving that secion silent. Maybe that's what happened with the story scenes. Yuzo was so strung out on hard drugs he couldn't get more than 4 or 5 quality tracks together. Sega did their best with the random material he created with his partner, programmer to create note randomisations. Which would have been good to keep random so no play through was the same. This is how I program alot of my music, so it needs recording to have it _not_ change. Something the sound chip and cpu could have easily handled. Yuzo was exploring into an as yet unnamed genre of music I forget the name but a sub-genre of hard techno style music that incorporates glitchy noises as percussive elements.
I want to add that 3 is better than 2. But it's added so many things so that it might be a bit _too_ complicated! The weapons now have unique abilities depending on the character by using the double tap _and_ special attack that drains the weapon's health. If you last long enough you will level up your power up to three stars which add speed and strength to your movement and attacks. You can roll up and down the screen, but that's a bit tough to pull off. You can do a special move whenever the power bar is max without a health penalty, and less penalty, the closer to max it is for a free special move every 8 seconds. I think there are even more additions probably I forgot that make. sor3 better than sor2. This game plays faster. SoA pushed the difficulty into ludicrous territory but that just means replay value to me. Oh yes, and in total, in the Japanese version, there are like 8 additional hidden characters you can play as.
The conclusion is especially strange to me. Not having continues? That means you won't get as far. Is that frustrating to you? That you can't reach a higher level of accomplishment with the controls so require infinite continues so you can hold forward and mash till you get the win? That's not how to play a game properly. You are supposed to try to understand it. Not just mash till the end. Unless you are team N. Because that is how they have been trained to engage with this medium. Not to think, just push forward and mash. Smash Bros is a 1 button game. Attack (and special is another button). You don't need to think. That's a fundamental difference in the design philosophies of the two consoles here. The Nintendo version of a game is not supposed to challenge you because you will become frustrated. You are not able to handle the emotional turmoil of not being told you are great or even that you did not succeed in a thing. It's this lack of emotional maturity that is the hallmark of the Nintendo follower. They have no time for learning or trying hard. They will be given annoying and frustrating challenges in the course of their baby games that otherwise encourage you to just sort of bump around into things. But they are short lived and only there to mitigate any potential accusations of the games being mindless and create massive schisms in your psyche.
SNES easily wins this battle but sometimes the Genesis came out on top: - Graphics overall are easily superior on the SNES it terms of color and detail. The Acid Pit looks like absolute garbage on Genesis and so much better on the SNES (even the 32x version looked worse than SNES). However some stages on Genesis looked equally good and on some stages looked better than SNES - the Armory for example looked better on Genesis. - Sound: SNES crushes it on quality and quantity of sound effects. I disagree with the reviewers:I prefer SNES on music as well b/c the Genesis port sounds too twangy. - Gameplay: the controls are easily superior on the Genesis and are just as responsive as the arcade game. The SNES has lag - not terrible but arcade purists for sure would prefer the Genesis controls (especially for 2 player mode). Difficulty - the SNES is more difficult and closer to the arcade difficulty. The CPU will roundhouse kick you if you try a jump kick but you can usually hit the CPU with jump kicks on Genesis. Kintaro also is much harder on the SNES. Some people might prefer the Genesis version in terms of difficulty b/c the arcade was already notoriously hard. But for arcade fans, the SNES difficulty is better. Also while the 3 button controller was a decent option on MK1 Genesis, it was a bad option for MK2 Genesis. - Price: like many 3rd party games, the Genesis was $10 cheaper than the SNES port. In this particular case, the extra quality of the SNES port made it more than worth that extra $10 Probe wasn't up to the task for Genesis programming (or Sega CD or 32x) and they were inconsistent when it came to other ports. The Game Gear MK ports for instance looked great for the hardware with huge sprites but poor control - the opposite of the Genesis ports. Probe also did the MS-DOS ports of MK1 & MK2 which were actually very high quality - if they had larger sprites and improved audio they would have been close to arcade perfect with lesser resolution. The Amiga ports (and the Amiga itself) I only have limited experience with - seems like the Genesis graphics with some downgrades though MK2 did a respectable job with the audio.
You guys should make a chart of all the games youve done and how they scored against each other in each category. Would love to see a recap and where all the numbers added up. Interesting to see if certain studios or genres leaned in a consistent direction
8:00 "the Sega game however is yet another bad guy kidnaps friends so you must save them. Which is really unfortunate because Babs Bunny is far more than just a damsel in distress." That's not the story. The story is you need to find a treasure so Montana Max doesn't. He asks Dr Gene Splicer to help by brainwashing some of Buster's friends. So 4 are brainwashed and 4 are kidnapped, making Babs 1 of 8 characters that need saving. Bab's is given equal title card space to Buster despite not being in the game. Anyway, obvious bias aside, if you think this SNES game is a good time well good luck to you sonny! Wanna lolly? Does your mummy know where you are?
Of course Super Nintendo is going to win with RPGs. Because Sega was all about releasing superior hardware to duplicate the arcade experience at home, while Nintendo was about bringing arcade-level hardware to console-only genres like RPGs, Zelda and Metroid type games, and platformers with so many levels they need a save feature.
I played this with Earthquake. He slows the game down so it's too slow. It's already maxing out the console. The score attack game isn't fun, I tried it. The Genesis vs modes are alot better. But the Genesis game has much tighter and more responsive controls so is much better. The SNES game and SMD game both have different moves for the characters funnily enough, so the games are quite different. But the SNES game is much too slow.
I still enjoy the snes version though because both slash buttons together do the heavy attack, I didn't know how to make the shoulder buttons work. But the very slow pace and zoomed out view make the game focused right down to it's core mechanics, and the extra effort of pressing down both buttons for a heavy attack adds to the depth and drama as well as encouraging me to not spam it so much.
I’ve owned this game forever but never actually booted it up. Had no idea the breadth of content it has! Impressive! And disappointing that Capcom didn’t make sure all us gamers knew how comprehensive it was.
One thing I'll just point out here is that there's technically nothing going on in World of Illusion that couldn't have been done the same or better on SNES (other than the horizontal resolution). Whereas there's plenty of stuff in Magical Quest that technically couldn't have been done as well as or at all on Genesis (the amount and range of colours, the multi-coloured semi-transparency effects, the 60fps Mode 7 rotating and scaling bosses). And this is often the case when I see these SNES vs Genesis battles.
There is also a PS1 version but it never released outside of PAL regions. So effectively the USA missed out on one of the best ports of Earthworm Jim 2.
I have a an original NES Classic I love these mini consoles bro Nintendo beats the hell out of Sega I can say that much though Sega had some alright games like Sonic but Nintendo has far better games
