this is beatiful!!!!! going to I see an annoying girl running toward me from the distance, waving her arms in the air like she's totally oblivious to any attention she might draw to herself. With this one 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That is because Toby Fox went for a retro sounding feel to some of his songs like "Asgore". "Retro" style is associated with the gameboy and nes era systems hence the similarity
Also, this is how ALL songs on the gameboy would sound like. Listen to the Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow soundtrack. They are all great and sound like this video.
Thinking about it, if someome were to port DDLC to a gameboy, you wouldn't have to worry about using the sound channels for anything else other than the music (or i guess the choice box selection sound) so the quality of them would be pretty good for the most part
I've been learning quite a bit about the Game Boy hardware recently, so don't threaten me with a good time! ... I'd have to get Dan to sign off on that kind of project.
Yep, I know. I just couldn't figure them out, maybe I'll rework this one one day. To be honest, I was never quite happy with it and it never sounded the way I wanted it to.
No no, this isn't any particular sound chip/console. MilkyTracker allows you to play anything as a sample and I played around with it back then. Nowadays I'm mostly using pulse waves and noise (for 8-bit stuff, at least).
Ah man, this was the first ever tracker song I heard in my life! From some old object show that I used to watch when I was a kid. I didn't know it was a tracker song till like a decade after watching that video when I was older. Even so, I didn't know what I was looking at when I watched the video. Till FearOfDark was recommended on my RU-vid page. From there it also kickstarted me into doing tracker music. I started with chiptune, then eventually expanded and finally learnt to use soundfonts (even so, I still will always love the charm of using only samples). Guess we're in the same boat, eh? Lovely cover with the limitations considered.
By the way, I missed this man! So cool you took up the suggestion! But hey, better late than never, eh? Love the sound of this!! Feels more "space"-like. If Matt Gray composed with the Megadrive, this might have been how it sounded. Also feels a bit Tim Follin, something from that Genesis Time Trax track called "Mission Briefing" with its slower feel.
Thanks! I tried to capture the energy of the original (and Matt Gray's remake!) while still keeping a "spacy" feel. The slower speed is, funnily enough, a Deflemask limitation because the speed is based on a clock. I could enter a custom clock frequency, but I decided to go with the PAL preset. I like the different atmosphere it creates. Calmer, maybe? Less frantic? It kinda alludes to the vastness of space, I feel.
