You guys were genuine and open with everyone you met. You spoke to some of the most vulnerable and they shared their stories with ease. That’s a gift. I grew up in Handsworth and left 40 years ago to start my career. As a kid I remember it was just a community. When going shopping on Soho Road with our Mom was a long event. She knew everyone. I was just stood by as she chatted with her friends 😅. Next shop, more friends, next shop, more friends 😂. Handsworth Market was brill. I remember well stocked, well presented shops, men in shirt, tie. Clean streets. I do drive through from time to time and I don’t recognise it at all. Times have changed, not just in Handsworth, everywhere.
I have lived in Birmingham all my life, lozells and handsworth. HMOs have messed up these areas now. Druggies and sex offenders living in residential areas. Landlords just looking for money and not caring for neighbours. Too many druggies at traffic lights begging for money! I don't think anywhere is a no go area, but it could be because I'm a big lad. I would say no go areas more so for women are the racist areas.
