using the engine of a vinyil player is a smart move! did u alterate the speed of the machine or matched the fps with the current rpm? also does this work without lighting?
Needs timed strobes to work for human eyes, but it can be filmed without strobes if you use a fast shutter speed. Animation loop size of 23 frames is designed for 78rpm of 3 speed record player. Strobe rate = 23frames * 78rpm / 60seconds = 29.9 strobes/second. That makes it quite smooth to watch for human eyes. I also make machines with integrated speed controlled motors so you can vary the speed of the animation. With an external turntable the animation has to run at one fixed speed.

Yes - it has real potential - the rainbow shadows under the snowflakes was not something I expected, but I still feel it's missing something to be complete...
essential :) of course Belt Drive is the way to go when you can - but that would have taken far too much engineering for small machines like this. My new much larger 2ft diameter animation machine is belt driven though. It still keeps the motor silicone mounts, but the fiddly carousel silicone interface is not needed anymore.
Don't you like women? but since you asked, 3 reasons: To add human interest and make the intro shot more interesting for most people, to actually start up the machines in sequence during the intro and showcase the touch control button, and because I suspected the primary market demographic of 3D zoetropes is men over 30 - (proven out by youtube stats).

I downloaded and printed your "Tetras" for the turntable as a first test of this fantastic world of Zoetrope. I downloaded your 4-mation app, but unfortunately I did not understand well how to send the signal to my LED lights, but perhaps it needs special LEDs. Please, could you tell me which LEDs I can use or if I have to buy them from you? And if together you also sell a controller to make them work? Thank you very much 👍

Just an idea but, rather than timing the strobe with an app, would it be a good idea to have a IR light/receiver at some place so the speed of the wheel determines the strobing frequency, that way it would always be exactly correct and you could perhaps control the ratio of light on/off ?
oh man - you just can't help yourself can you? Strobes are not timed from the app - strobe timing is configured from the app, allowing you to change the brightness or the animation loop size. The timing is actually driven by a magnetic encoder on the motor before the gearbox. That encoder generates nearly 3000 pulses per single revolution of the animation and the arduino micro-controller uses those pulses to time the strobes per the configuration set by the app (brightness and how many strobes per animation revolution).
It looks that way with the naked eye. The video is a demonstration of what happens for the human eye with and without the strobe lights. Although the camera is not as good as adjusting to the light changes as the human eye, the camera also generates occasional unavoidable dark line glitches when the strobe are on. It looks much better in person.
@@n0f8r Thats awesome. I understand about the sampling theorem but i just wasnt sure if the HVS would make it possible. Does the room need to be dark for the strobe light to provide enough contrast? It's amazing! and the animation is really cool
@@erikm9768 again, the camera is set up to show what the human eye sees - so as you can see when the strobes are off, it's not a dark room. This is achieved with 216 Watts of LEDs in 4 custom panels with six 9W bulbs per panel, backed by over 2000µF of panasonic capacitors.
