I love the idea of the “evil” king actually being a good guy and a great leader, but just likes pretending to be an evil king as if in a play, and the prophet is the legitimate evil one

Actually, a story where the villan adopts the orphan champion and the hero has to break away from his family to fufill his destiny is really interesting. Especially if the villan really does grow to love the hero as a son
