Armed home invasions are common. Threats to life. Fraud. Don’t minimize the reality. Pets are poisoned. Home robberies are often inside jobs of workers, Tourists and foreigners are targets. It is a reality. And yes, a matter of choice. Many choose to stay regardless. A family was just defrauded for thousands in Guanacaste and then their lives threatens while they were sent photos of bags of body parts. My friends were gassed and tied up in their home and husband taken to empty bank account. Their baby survived the gas, their dog did not. They fled. This shit happens.
Wow that was exactly what I was looking for! So informative! Love hearing from parents who have actively been raising their kids there. I didn’t realize you could give birth there and not be racked with debt afterwards like in the US. Multi-cultural , bilingual upbringing in nature?! Sign me up baby! Yes to have kids in CR is cheap. You don't pay for hospitals , doctors, medicine it is free until You reach 18 years old. I have three kids I have never paid a single medical bill in the public security system. That includes destist, medicines, lab test, Even when My wifi was pregnant three months before giving birth she stopped working for six months but she continued getting her salary and after that for the time she breast feed the baby she gets one hour for breast feeding paid that she does not work.
Those are not the right people to ask, locals would be the right choice. Anywhere that you travel is not 100% safe ( just a few little places are extremely safe) but CR still a third world country, have high crime rates, ticos would tell you “ ojo al Cristo” , just be careful, enjoy this amazing paradise and be nice to locals
I lived in San Jose for a year teaching English and agree with what the lady said about it being completely different to the rest of the country. Coming from London, SJO was NOT the experience I was imagining, so that was my shock also. Unfortunately that is where the jobs are however. I can't believe that nobody mentioned how expensive it is either! On the positive side of surprises, I felt like as a solo female traveller it wasn't as dangerous as people would have you believe. Yes, you need to be careful and alert, yes, I heard many stories from people out there how commonplace crime is, yes, there were certain times that I felt what I was doing wasn't a good idea (arriving at the coast late at night forgetting uber doesn't exist there, no cash for a taxi and having to walk through pitch black jungle to reach where I was staying). However, nothing ever happened to me in this regard and overall I felt safe.

THE TICOS ARE THANKFUL, THEY ARE HAPPY WITH WHAT THEY HAVE AND THEY MAKE THE BEST OF WHAT THEY HAVE!!!
Bendiciones Costa Rica for a loving and BEAUTIFUL AND LOVING COUNTRY AND WELCOMING PLACE!!! AND THE PINEAPPLE AND PAPAYA, I came from the USA and we get our Papayas from Mexico and they smell and taste rotten, I never used to eat Papayas until I ate one of Costa Rica's Papayas, and this is the only place where I will eat one.
I agree with you Samantha June, I currently live in Roatan with my 2 children and one on the way. If it wasn't for the income I earn as a digital marketer and if my kids were NOT healthy, I wouldn't live here.
For the woman of 08 40 ticos don't love expats because they pay our bills, just 10% of ticos work in turism and I'm part of that 90% who don't work in turism but I'm friendly cause is part of education no matter if you have money or not
*If you live off-grid, have healthy kids, don't mind homeschooling, and have money...* then YES it's a FANTASTIC place to raise kids. If you come to Costa Rica to live a hippie lifestyle, are against vaccines, have a disabled child and have low income....then no. Not at all. Costa Rica is not a society where you would want to raise a child with special needs and disabled kids are NOT happy children here as they get discriminated against a lot and get left out on most things nature related because of the terrain. Private schools are good only if you live in a wealthy area. Public schools in Costa Rica are terrible wherever you go, there is a lack of resources and good infrastructure in *public schools.* Public healthcare here varies...I'd rather shell out a bit more for private care though.
hun have you ever been there? ive lived there my ENTIRE CHILDHOOD. Better than America and we actually have wild life and shit, and volcanoes plus more, tf does America have?
Not my experience at all. Was there just before everything shut down. Had a great time swimming, surfing and hiking in the jungle. The wildlife was incredible and added greatly to our enjoyment. No it's not free there but the food is top notch and lodgings very enjoyable.

Also something very excited: watch the desert 🌵 🐫 🐪 ☀️...!! Watch a tree grow...!! Watch the trails of caterpillars 🐛....!!!
Hey FitzRica (cool name) I am over an hour from San Jose, near the beach, but 1850 foot above it, and so I am 10 minutes drive down the mountain to the beach, yet my Villa does not even have A/C. I am in that Video, at the 6:12 time break. If you are in this area (25 min north of Jaco/Los Suenos and 1 hr from San Jose, stop by, 1st Beer is one me.
This by far was one of the best informative video . Both my parents are Costa Rican but came to the states in the 60's I need to call one of my cousins have them check you all out so I can see if I can come up for a visit and get my teeth done .
