Wow, very, very noticeable that NOT ONCE do they mention the Canadian couple. Talk about prejudice. The Brits and Americans have always been very arrogant regarding Canada.

The dances in this era might look “basic”, comparing to today’s big, flashy and fast dances today. I wouldn’t call it an improvement though, but more of a different kind of dancing. Because an “improvement”, or “evolution” usually means keeping the best parts of the old, and create new better things. But today some of the very best elements are harder to find. For example, the natural movement, the comfortable feeling between man and woman, the sensitive hands and articulate feet and legs. They are gems from this era.

6:00 The top couples are very sensitive to each other in the move and manipulating figures. It’s the man manipulating woman in ballroom dancing.

Is that the Ross Mitchell Orchestra in the background playing all of those ballroom songs? If so, I think I found their dance music calling......

I was wrong. It was Andy Moss and his orchestra. But I realize the honor dance song the orchestra did for the winning couple - "S'Wonderful" by George Gershwin, a boppy quickstep.

@charlessmith263
@charlessmith263 4 года назад
I also realize that this dancesport event featured a live band! A live band! The problem here is that the band members had to do strict tempo timing to keep up with those 5 dances involved in this dance competition.

I am guessing those were the years that the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) became popular in the 1980s, because it is that organization that codified the dance steps we know in modern competitive ballroom dancing. In the 1980s, International Style Standard was known as "Modern" - covering the V. Waltz, Slow Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, and Tango.

RAYMOND MYHRENGEN BEST IN SAMBA. Much better bouncing action than Donnie Burns. Brilliant by Myhrengen. Not until Joanna Leunis and Michael Malikowski something better, but they are by far THE BEST samba dancers in world history. Donnie Burns NEVER in his career obtained top samba basic action. But brilliant in rumba and jive!

This Blackpool will ALWAYS be remembered for THE LOVELY WALTZ of Marcus and Karen, one of the highlights in all history of dancing. So light, fluid, musical, perfect. Also their quickstep shown in the video is world class. In my opinion, Sinkinsen has not a good timing in the foxtrot shown here. Hawkins and Newbury, however, are very good in the quickstep.

Really? Blackpool finalists being mediocre or having bad timing!?
@helgechristophersen7665
@helgechristophersen7665 4 года назад
@@frankgoogle3610 There is a debate about timing in the foxtrot, very often commented on even by DSI commentators, and supporting my general view. I`m for easygoing slow-quick-quick in feather step, and think Sinkinsen (who is very good in waltz) is stopping too much and not having the flow needed for the feather-light fox. Arunas and Katusha became world famous for their brilliant fox. And Mirko and Alessia, too, and the Hiltons. The video here shows a large part from the beginning of fox, Sinkinsen´s own interpretation of timing, and I don't think it is good. I am a big fan of classic timing and movement. We may note that DSI commentators in separate finals year after year has not been afraid of "attacking" irregular (unusual) timing in the fox even in the final. My view is perfectly the same.
@frankgoogle3610

@@helgechristophersen7665 Dancing is a living sports/art. Always room for interpretation. What ever our individual views are, every finalist in Blackpool has undergone round after round the most intense scrutiny of the judges (basically all former world champions and Blackpool winners). Judging any of those couples as mediocre or off time, seems to me quite presumptuous. Which of course doesn't mean, that you are totally allowed to have your personal preference. But for sure none of these couples are/were ever mediocre or off beat. My personal taste eg with most Foxtrot music has been the interpretation of John Wood/Ann Louis...
@MsGrockle
@MsGrockle Год назад
@@helgechristophersen7665 And the debate continues! I could watch Sinkinson all day, I competed against him at amateur level back in the day and I love the way he moves and his timing. BUT some judges really dislike this sort of Foxtrot timing, where is it executed to the point of being considered out of time. Personally I find the current trend of the over-exaggerated backbend and sway (from both leader and follower) to be much more unpalatable. Watched some VW videos recently, where you would swear that the couples were dancing samba rolls! Anyway, it's lovely to have the old school competitors popping up here, for us oldies to relive our memories :)
