The stylist is correct that the hair is heat damaged and the locs wouldn't look healthly and they would look limp but there are women on youtube showing that you can still get locs with heat damaged hair...Im going to post a link down below of a person I follow and her hair is naturally thin and has heat damage..And she was able to get her locs in..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-smtAOffS8gE.htmlsi=2X-DM_bjz4mX9c69
Thanks for your comment. It’s true you can start with relaxed and heat damaged hair but people really don’t want to start with (what are they calling it these days?) Boneless Locs lol.
@Vicky Shelton how do you get the bunching out on loose wavy hair. My hair does this when I wash it. It’s still locking up for like 5 months now. It’s so hard to stop my hair from bunching. I even fixed them and after I washed they came back again 😡😡😡
After the shampoo and steam treatment the hair should be soft enough to stretch if you pull out the bunched area. At 5 months it should be able to be repaired before it Locs up into a bunched ball.
Thank you soooo much for your thorough and clear explanation with examples. Started my locs with interlocked roots and two strand twisted relaxed ends 5 weeks ago. I have, what I now know to be bunching from watching your video, forming on some of twists and will correct them. Thank you very much. There aren't a lot of knowledgeable people on here talking about different textures and locs. I appreciate you.
Honestly wanting to know, how can this mess up your locs, unless it was done too tight? It's an alternative to wearing your hair the same every day. I guess its because its a protective style ( so you won't over due loc maintenance) what truly is the problem? We are known to change our hair at a drop of a dime, why is this artistic style of covering your locs for a moment different?
There are ways you can switch up your style by adding hair without damaging them like the style in this video. check out my IG page. I break it down there.
What do you say to someone whose hair curls all over but can be brushed straight if put in a ponytail? Like when I took my point tail out today my hair was straight around the edges 😅. I have no perm for years but I don’t know how to get my hair back to how it was. It’s straight like a flat ironed it too .
Thanks for your question. I would say to stop brushing it into a ponytail. I’ve seen people get damage by wearing the same ponytail or puff everyday. Stretching can straighten the hair and you may even notice breakage from the ponytail holder.
I BE SO TEMPTED TO GET BRAIDS ALL MY LIFE ALL I WORE WAS BRAIDS NOW IM A YEAR INTO MY LOCS AND I LOVE MY LOCS I ALWAYS SEE OTHER GIRLS GETTING BRAIDS OVER LOCS BUT NOW I SEE ITS NOT FOR ME SO I WILL JUST CONTINUE TO GROW MY LOCS HEALTHY AND BEAUTIFUL IM TOO INVESTED TO LOOSE MY LOCS AND START THINNING 😂😂😂😂SORRY ❤❤❤❤❤
Interesting. First video I've seen that mentioned this. I stared my loc journey 5 days ago with 2 strand twist. I definitely noticed that some strands are straight and flat vs the puffiness per say as the others. I wonder how will this affect the look? I'm going to keep moving foward with the process but you feel that hair won't loc? If not, maybe it'll give me the bohemian or goddess look 🤷🏾♀️.
If my locs are all bunched at 1 1/2 years in, is it too late to repair them? Or should I just cut them off? I started with long hair, got instant locs, but wasn’t ready for this bunching up. And mine bunched badly, immediately. Was too embarrassed to get help. Oh and the stylist who started them quit doing hair, so I’ve been on my own doing them. It’s going okay, but I know I need professional help.
Thanks for your question. It really depends on the maturity of your Locs. Even though your are more than a year in, it’s still possible to be able to repair. Find a Loctician who you can have a consultation with to find out.
Everyone hair is different. What causes damage to someone or your hair may not cause damage to others. It also just depends on how tight you make it as research has shown tightness has been the cause of thinning hair for people who get braids. This video is kinda damaging to the lox community because you are pushing a narrative of “if you can’t handle just your locs don’t get it.” When seasoned loctitians have came out and said it can be beneficial it can’t. It just depends on the thickness of your hair. My sister was putting wigs on braids and her starter locs are thick full and healthy. If thats the case you should be advocating for leaving locs alone that means don’t dye them either because the chemicals can break down hair textures and cause your locs to thin and break apart as well. Let people have what they want. If you want braids over your locs get them but ask the braided. Does my hair seem to thin. And if they do ask them what can you do to strengthen your hair. A real stylist should be able to offer ways to achieve your goals while giving you amazing results. While also giving you tips on how to maintain and take care of your hair while it’s in the style.
I appreciate you expressing your opinion. Here’s the thing, “everyone’s hair is different” is not true. I’m a cosmetologist so my background is not just styling hair but I understand the science of the hair structure. So my advice is not to shut down peoples wants to cover their Locs. My advice will always be to protect the health of hair strands, Loose or Loc’d. So yes, in my 22 years of experience and n cosmetology, it’s my job to educate my community about things that can cause harm to their hair. And yes, my narrative is to let people know that if you are not truly ready to go through the loc journey without adding extra hair, then wait until you are so you don’t cause damage to the foundation. I can really dig deeper as to WHY people feel the need to cover their Locs that’s a whole different video lol. I also teach people the proper way to add length in a way that’s non damaging because I understand the need to temporarily switch up your Loc style. But even with that, Locs should be mature enough.
And let’s be real, most hair Braiders do NOT specialize in hair care so they won’t tell you that you are not a good candidate for braids. Even if you ask for them not to braid tight they do it by habit.
@@VickySheltonI agree, & during my loc journey it has definitely been a tedious patient process yet, more successful, without this go round, bc I didn’t add any hair, (as I was testing the difference in each process )however I’ve turned down many for braids, if In my professional opinion, it would do more damage than contribute to growth.
Hi. Yes, I was taught that life grows to the right so twist in the natural grow of things. An example is if you cut open a tree trunk you’ll see the life lines of the tree circle going clockwise.
@@VickyShelton It really sparked an interest in me. The tree stump reference gives me something to dive in to. Thank you for taking the time to respond!
I’ll sure when people get braids or twist over their locs it’s not permanent, maybe a couple of weeks so although these points are valid, I don’t think you’ll have an issue for a quick short term hairstyles.
It really depends on who’s doing the style. There is no need to add hair this tight. And you are right, it should be worn for short periods of time but we all know if it’s being put in too tight, they palm on wearing for months at a time like they would with loose hair.
I did this Sunday and it quickly shifted my mood from feeling frustrated to feeling like "oh shit" with my hair! I'm 11 months loc'd and my frizz was so unruly and had me feeling like my hair wasn't ever going to mature but after I was done my locs looked better then when I go to the salon to get my retwist. My hair didn't look as "polished" as when the lady who does my hair does it but it looked more like actual locs and the fullness was more pronounced. I did good considering that was my 1st time retwisting my locs period and I didn't use any gel. Now I feel confident I can maintain my son's starter locs too instead of taking him to the loc shop with this method!
@@VickyShelton I've heard people on these RU-vid streets saying that lol! I did it like I knew what I was doing right away. I guess my ancestors was tired of me complaining and helped me out! 😭😂🤷🏽♀️
I have been contemplating getting this surgery for awhile. I was afraid to do it once I 1st heard about it but I'm more comfortable to get it now being that I haven't heard many horror stories about it over the yrs. Everybody I know that's done it is glad they did it! I feel the same as you about the glasses. I actually like them but I don't want to have to wear them. I am bored with them now though and I can't stand putting contacts in and out so I rarely wear them. Thanks for your review!
I'm sorry but I thought bunching, shrinking & budding was all part of the locking stages. Wouldn't it be best to trust the process and let the hair do its thing?!
Shrinkage and budding is definitely part of the Locing process. Bunching doesn’t happen to everyone and it’s up to the person to keep it bunched as it Locs or not.
This helped me so much because I was getting scared because I have a lot of bunching. Now I don’t mind it but I was concerned that it would be a problem and I didn’t want it to cause any damage.
My hair was bunching and my location didn’t bring it to my attention. However I take full responsibility because it my hair and I had left it up to her to take care of it. I should have done my own homework. Now I go through them before every retie and run between my thumb and finger along the full length of the hair.
Totally I'm going to try this over the weekend. My locs love to get the frizz at the roots. I dont mind it but sometimes want to make it a bit more with the loc.
Well nothing should be added over locs! Weave wigs braids whatever you want to call it! It’s ridiculous to get locs then get braids smh! The points of locs is rocking that style! If you’re not ready for that just do not loc
