Why we couldn’t start her Locs.

As hairstylists, we don’t make mistakes. We make discoveries 💡
🔭 Here’s what I’ve discovered: I will now include what not to do in between the consultation and the starter Locs appointment. Like, avoid heat styling or anything that could potentially change your curl pattern. As well as avoid styles that can cause breakage (tight braids).
✅ Here is why I don’t start Locs on processed/heat damaged hair:
High or excessive heat can permanently break the S-S or disulfide bonds within hair strands that give hair its strength along with protein cross-links. Besides the need to start the foundation on healthy hair, the heat trained hair won’t look or behave the same as the natural hair. That could make the Locing process difficult.
With over 20 years in the game I’ve made a lot of discoveries. I’m here to share them with my community so we can all succeed together ♥️

The stylist is correct that the hair is heat damaged and the locs wouldn't look healthly and they would look limp but there are women on youtube showing that you can still get locs with heat damaged hair...Im going to post a link down below of a person I follow and her hair is naturally thin and has heat damage..And she was able to get her locs in..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-smtAOffS8gE.htmlsi=2X-DM_bjz4mX9c69

Thanks for your comment. It’s true you can start with relaxed and heat damaged hair but people really don’t want to start with (what are they calling it these days?) Boneless Locs lol.

She could have done instant locs or 2 strand it’s for heat damaged hair

It wouldn’t have been the same. They would have been limp and unhealthy.

Interesting. First video I've seen that mentioned this. I stared my loc journey 5 days ago with 2 strand twist. I definitely noticed that some strands are straight and flat vs the puffiness per say as the others. I wonder how will this affect the look? I'm going to keep moving foward with the process but you feel that hair won't loc? If not, maybe it'll give me the bohemian or goddess look 🤷🏾‍♀️.

What do you say to someone whose hair curls all over but can be brushed straight if put in a ponytail? Like when I took my point tail out today my hair was straight around the edges 😅. I have no perm for years but I don’t know how to get my hair back to how it was. It’s straight like a flat ironed it too .

Thanks for your question. I would say to stop brushing it into a ponytail. I’ve seen people get damage by wearing the same ponytail or puff everyday. Stretching can straighten the hair and you may even notice breakage from the ponytail holder.

Could she have started with 2 strand twists instead of coils?

No. The same thing would’ve happened. Heat damaged hair would just hang limp and thin.

I have a question, will I still be able to get braids with heat damage?.. or is it too dangerous for my hair.

I'm planning to get locks on bleached hair. My curl pattern is still intact. I wonder if this will be a problem.

I suggest getting a professional, in salon, strengthening treatment before starting your Locs.

Hey, would you advise on getting locs with large anounts of split ends?

No. Hair should be in its healthiest state.

Hi. Yes, I was taught that life grows to the right so twist in the natural grow of things. An example is if you cut open a tree trunk you’ll see the life lines of the tree circle going clockwise.

@@VickyShelton It really sparked an interest in me. The tree stump reference gives me something to dive in to. Thank you for taking the time to respond!
