This channel is primarily about instrumental music that can cross language barriers. I try to post material that is hard to get and not already posted on youtube. My interests include soul, jazz, big band of the 1960s, soundtracks, bop, and oldies. I try to provide additional graphics to make use of RU-vid's visual presentation, rather than only including one cover shot. Let me know if you have any comments, suggestions, or requests.
The album in the photos is not correct in attributing this song to Waldron alone. It was co-composed with Billy Holiday, who wrote the lyrics in 1959 on a flight from NY to San Francisco. Waldron based the melody on Billy's lyrics. She died before they could record the song together. The first time it was recorded was as an instrumental by Waldron and McLean on Waldron's 1959 album Left Alone, several months before Billy died. Abbey Lincoln recorded the first vocal version on her 1961 record Straight Ahead, with Eric Dolphy on alto, Waldron on piano, etc.
Fantastic channel, great selection. Nice concept to get the albums one track after the other separately. Also many albums I didn't know before. Subscribed long time ago. Keep goin', bro.
When I was 10 years old, we had BRING YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC TO CLASS DAY & Brought THIS Album to play to the Class & everyone thought I was a Complete Lunatic from Another Planet juxtaposed to the Pop & Rock of the 70's (And I thought Everyone Else that Ordinary Day was a Narrow Minded Cretin. Just Quietly to Myself) And I say to my Dad who is Dat in an Extemporaneous Cloud in Heaven & Who played Drums AND Played his Jazz Vinyl during my Childhood. God Bless you Dad. You opened Portals in my Developing Brain that Made me think ANYTHING WAS POSSIBLE in the World of Art Practice - As Long as You are Willing to Present Yourself with Prescient Desire & Take Risks.
Thank you! Paul Frances Webster is such a creative, original lyricist. I love this song. Thanks, too for the credits and lyrics. Do you know of any recordings that include the verse?. Also, did you copy the lyric from the sheet music? I haven't seen the sheet music. I hear, at the top of the last A section, " A PONY for a cart to take her out to dine" Thanks again!!
Yes, he also plays bass trombone on one cut. Entire playlist can be found here: ru-vid.com/group/PLyHn3f7-9IUICPfWI5F9_Z7yoEe-f-lk3 www.discogs.com/release/1345311-Chico-Hamilton-Chico-Hamilton-And-The-Players
