Amazing effects for the time that still look better than 99% of the computer garbage we are fed nowadays. Really well shot and edited to sync perfectly with Horners music and Bones/Kirks dialogue. A sad but beautiful moment in film. Reminds me of the shot in TWOK where they launch Spock’s casket into Genesis just as the sun rises to ‘Amazing Grace’. America no longer has this kind of talent and it’s a damn shame because I miss it.
When I saw the first explosion, I was like, that's still ok, they can fix her. But when I saw half her saucer section blown away, I knew that was it, even before the fiery descent.
The marvelous strength and determination of James T Kirk. Moments after the gut-punch of losing his son, he shakes it off and begins taking decisive action to save his crew and ultimately win. Because he doesn't believe in the no-win scenario...
Two things, I. Thats the longest minute in history, 2. Even 200 years into the future they use passwords like 0000! My bike lock is trickier to break into than a whole starship!
I rember Kirk and crew transporting onto the bird of pray and overpowering the captain. Then used the bird for prey to transport a whale in the next movie.
Every time I see this clip the same though occurs to me. Chekov was most recently the first officer of the Reliant (when was he ever acting science officer on the Enterprise in the previous film) and Scott had been promoted to captain at the end of the previous film.
One of my favorite memories was when my girlfriend at the time and I went to Universal Studios and I got to be in the Star Trek production that used clips from Wrath of Khan as a Klingon. Really wish I still had that recording.
I love that moment when Spock waves the security guards over staring down Decker never taking his gaze off him. And that the guards come right over. Spock's own badassness right there.
One thing you've, as a fan of Star Trek in June 1984, got to admire about Klingons is the sheer fact that they actually believe that a 8-10 man boarding party is going to subdue a Constitution Class Starship with a crew compliment of well over 400. They fully expect to find the crew and yet find no one 😂 BOOM🤯
They successfully scanned human lifeforms on the planet, but couldn't get an accurate count for what was currently on the ship. You're quite right that their intelligence would have suggested a crew of 400 or more. I guess they thought if the commander of the vessel was surrendering then they could easily make their way to the bridge and take control without much of a fight. The numbers still have me shaking my head. I'm trying to understand the difference in the size of the ships, internal volume and why the Klingons operate with so few crew. However in The Voyage Home it would appear that Kirk, Scott, McCoy, Chekov, Sulu and Scott still operated the Klingon vessel with less than half of what it would normally operate with. And they were far less familiar with the ship's systems than the Klingon crew would have been.
Star Trek II & III are great movies, though it would habe been nice to see a bit better self destruction; thinking that engineering would be as important as the bridge; it makes for great entertainment
