`Never Mind the Buzzcocks' is a quiz show with a comedic twist that tests contestants' knowledge of music. The contestants are split into two teams, with the teams often featuring a music or entertainment celebrity among the contestants.
The show ran from 1996 until 2015. From its inception until December 2005, it was presented by Mark Lamarr (who also produced the show, from 2004 through to his departure). Simon Amstell started hosting in October 2006. Regular team captains include Phill Jupitus, Sean Hughes (until May 2002), Bill Bailey (September 2002 - February 2008), Noel Fielding (October 2009 - December 2014), and also the guest captains (October 2008 - January 2009). Bill Bailey had appeared as a guest in series 4 on Phill Jupitus's team and series 5 on Sean Hughes's team.
I remember watching this episode in 2005. Loved Lamarr and I remember at the end of this episode Lamarr chanting “Simon’s burning, Simon’s burning, piss on Simon, piss on Simon”. I was gutted when Lamarr left and couldn’t believe Simon Amstell, who I only knew as the timid and butt of the gags guest from this episode would become the new presenter. He definitely had more confidence as the host and I grew to like him, but as this episode demonstrates Lamarr was the best.
Fot all his faults and his young stupidity, I think Donny didn't do too bad. When they showed the video of him shouting a the promoter and crossing his legs you could see he was like "yeah, guess I was a bit of a dick " but at the end of day, he was himself.
If I recall, this is the episode where the show died unofficially. It started to feel like an ugly tabloid, and once this happened everyone was waiting for the next fallout. None of the regulars were comfortable with it. Bleak time for British telly. The era of Jeremy Kyle, so putting the boot in for ratings was de jeur. Not surprised the tories won at the following election.
Preston called Amstel a 'snotty posh boy' after this. Worth noting that Preston is descended from Earl Grey, the former British Prime Minister, was privately educated and his grandfather was a noted professor at Princeton.....
Can I object to Dara getting the points? The original (apart from the Melanie song) was Combine Harvester by Brendan Grace, which went to no. 1 in Ireland, 12 months before the Wurzels scored a UK hit with it (ie ripped off the Brendan Grace version). Dara O Briain should know this!
2:32 Who's the horsey girl who shows her upper class status by her lips not aligning with her teeth (front teeth an inch below the lip; lower teeth correspondingly below)? Is she anything in the pop world? I am an old old man and haven't kept up with the idea pop music should be the preserve of the polo-playing classes.
What in the DEI is this car crash. How to run a great show into the rocks. Fill it with unfunny DEI hires and bum lick all the popstars and put that awful man Nish on it. Daisy has little to no talent. Greg is too nice. Jamal is ok but they have shoehorned him in cos he’s brown. Woke has killed another classic.
This is such a laugh especially when Jeremy refers to what Anthony says as noise. However taking mental health into account is really important too and at least we understand that now. Anthony comes across as a lovely dear.
My first BF introduced me to this show likeeee 14 yrs ago and I still watch it!! Only the episodes with Simon as the host though cause he was what made the show imo!! 🖤🖤🖤
