They set up obsidian to fail and bankrupt themselves and it completely backfired. They took 4 years to make Fallout 3 then asked Obsidian to make a similar sized game in 18 months... If you don't think they tried to rig it then you're insane. They managed to reach the deadline by unfortunately cutting a lot of content out (which can be restored by mods) and it became the best 3D Fallout game. They probably now have a massive inferiority complex after they realized they make buggy messes which will never be as good as other studios attempting to make the same game.
Not sure how much Howard may have had to do behind closed doors, but I can never quite forgive Bethesda for only giving Obsidian 18 months and *withholding royalties unless they got a 90 or higher on metacritic*
I’m more of a Josh Sawyer guy than a Todd Howard guy, by a wide margin, but I’ll give the man his due respect. Ashley Cheng seems like a cool cat as well.
lol part of me hoped you were going to sentence-mix Tim Cain to make him say that Todd Howard beat him up or something, but this is a good vid. It is remarkable how little the idea of Todd disliking NV is based on.
i think that todd claiming that new vegas is hard to incorporate because of all the endings is a total cop out, a gamne like new vegas were the audience has basically played through every ending because its so good, just choose the most intresting ending for the future and roll with it.
@@endaburns2121 i would say that the ending obsidian clearly hinted at was the NCR Ending but personally i believe that independant would be a lot more influential and intresting
I can tell he feels salty about NV. If you see that wired interview you can see that he feels so proud about F3 and he talks so much about the game. He should imo, it's a great game, but NV did essentially better in all aspects than F3 and I believe that he feels a bit salty about that
That’s his fault he should get new stakeholders and tell them to go fuck themselves and cry to call of duty and then say we need more time for dialogue and choices and consequences along with multiple endings and factions. If he was able to make Skyrim along with oblivion with way more choices and consequences than even fallout four I think he can manage. He saved fallout from being bankrupt now do the damn work and do what Tim Cain, Josh sawyer & feargus would have wanted. New formula is great, but either make your own content that’s similar to severe story or stick with the old formula and enhance on it
This again? First there are two Bethesdas. Todd Howard is not the publisher, he is a developer which is Bethesda Game Studios. The other Bethesda is the publisher, that's Bethesda Softworks. So it's not up to Todd pay them. Second. The Obsidian owners said they didn't ask for a bonus and that it wasn't big deal. They had an interview with eurogamer and here is what they said. "And what can you say?" added Parker. "You can't get mad at somebody for a contract you signed. We signed a contract, it had very clear terms in it. 'Oh we were really close...' We didn't hit it." "Also," said Urquhart, "we didn't put those terms in there. [Bethesda] added that bonus - we didn't ask for the bonus. We just pretty much ignored it. As an independent developer, any of those Metacritic-type bonuses you just ignore. "You don't control testing, you don't control promotion, you don't control when the game ships. There are a whole lot of things you don't control. That is in no way - and it's really important for me to say this - an excuse. "It is more when publishers try to change financial terms based upon things like Metacritic scores we say, 'Look you have as much of an effect over those...' You could ship the same game in the same way with two different publishers and the Metacritic would be different." But, he concluded, "It was in the contract, it was what it said. We didn't put it in there and we signed it. I wasn't crying over it by any stretch of the imagination." It's gamers who made it into drama. You guys need to fact check before you spread misinformation and conspiracy theories.
I think Bethesda does have a deep seated resentment for what Obsidian did, because over the years the love and respect for what that game accomplished has eclipsed alot of what Bethesda has done. It's been the golden standard of role-playing storytelling since it's release.
its fucking crazy they were able to capture the essence and feel off fallout all on their own without help from the original team its mind boggling its actually a damn miracle they nailed the game so hard. New Vegas will go down as one of the best game made and hopefully in the future people look back at the game and realize this is what a real game is. It is extremely buggy but it was made in 1 year which on its own is a pretty big feat considering how much the game is jam packed with content. Also its probably was for the best they didnt have any say on the making of the game lol.
2024 UPDATE: Since people still allege that Todd Howard has contempt for New Vegas (especially because of the whole TV Show canon thing) he was asked again on his opinion on the matter. I personally decided to join the many psychologists and journalists that say Todd absolutely resents New Vegas and made an updated video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OlUQFmJ2ubI.htmlsi=3MXl3zhQzbygne_T
I love how people pretend Todd hates New Vegas. Like we can dislike him lying about how good 76 would run at launch etc, but guys stop lying about him. Doesn't make it right because he lied about 76.
its really weird hearing these guys from bethesda talking about letting other people handle fallout as though thats not what they've been doing this whole time
2:57 Ah, Tim Cain creator of The Outer The Worlds. Edit: I'm making a joke about the spelling of The Outer Worlds within the video. They have it spelled out as "The Outer The Worlds" I can't believe I gotta point this shit out.
New Vegas was such a free roam rpg and everything you did mattered... first time i played a game that made me feel like i made the wrong choices and it made me play it over and over it was too damn fun... all bethesda games have too strong of a main story and all the choices dont matter in the end.. i wish they made fallout 76 a singleplayer, then id probably enjoy exploring it.
@@TjBaxy invisible walls in all 4 games buddy.. you wanna be walked and have your vag caroused by todd howard every start of the game go ahead... fnv gives you choices from the start and lets you carry out many options... bethesda is rpg with no rp... it gives no engagement.. it dont feel like im free roaming if im only given 2 options every damn time and the quest are just go to this location and shoot stuff
I love how you say this like multiple obsidian employees have said multiple times they agreed to the bonus terms and don’t think they deserved the money
@@TjBaxy Chris Avellone was the WRITER for FNV, sometimes Lead Designer, and co-founder of Obsidian. Objectively, he has no idea what he is talking about, and considering the state of both the games they had released that had to be made in a year, he is entirely clueless. He wasn't the programmer who had to crunch for 18 months to make a game that only barely worked on release, just like KOTR2. He's a great writer but clearly isn't very keen on the technical nor bussiness side of things.
@@TjBaxy Tell you what, go get a good idea for a game, go recruit some developers, interview them, and tell them that your idea has to be complete in a year and that they are going to have to work long unpaid overtime hours. 9 AM to 9 PM, maybe even to 12 PM, I've seen it before! You as project lead though, don't need to put in such rough hours. You don't actually have to hire them, since you are just conducting an experiment. Or maybe your game idea is so great you go through with it anyways, would love to see how THAT turns out lmao Let me know if you get any responses back, and if you do, let me know if you get POSITIVE responses, I'd love to see it 😂
@@TjBaxy You are severly misunderstanding the point to the point of extreme ignorance. There is no ego at play here, considering I'm not liking my own comments. Only facts I have observed working 7 years in game dev. Me personally I'd never work for Chris, no matter how good his writing is, and beyond the allegations cause he's a shitty teamlead for thinking 18 months is acceptable for a game the scale of FNV. That's enough time to make a Clash of Clans ripoff, not an Open World RPG.
Sad that instead of realizing that Fallout NV is the best "modern" Fallout game and taking that as inspiration for new games (or remaking it) they just moved on..
After all so many years, we need to accept New Vegas was a fluke. Obsidian is unable to make another game that is as good as New Vegas, even with more time and money. They have tried and they have failed.
Essentially what Todd said very nicely: it’s out IP why the F**K would we let this cash cow known as “Fallout” into the hands of another company? I totally get it. Fans out here getting mad Obsidian isn’t allowed another crack at it. It’s a business and it’s not logical for one company to give another completely separate company creative control over their biggest and best IP!
