The only reason I almost call these two a tie is b/c I've seen the first one so many times. We enjoyed B-B a lot and normally I wait until movies end up in the $5 bin at...that store. However, I'll get this one straight away if I even can. Some characters could have shown more and others less but I believe a good picture true to the original but not too much recycled humor/horror.
I love Beetlejuice! It’s a perfect movie. It’s especially innovative for the time with its non conventional concept of the afterlife. Its timing was wonderful given that the late 80s were a complicated time for horror films: with the rise of vhs horror movies weren’t mainstream. The only solution was to poke fun at them(affectionately). Movies like Friday the 13 6, Evil Dead 2, Re-Animator and this brought horror back on account of being satirical but also fun and creative, especially in an aesthetic sense. You’re right that the movie closes up the Deetz/Maitland Story perfectly but nevertheless Beetlejuice’s universe is one that you can revisit. However, the best way to do so is to follow new characters, with Beetlejuice as the recurring one. This isn’t to say that the main characters of the first movie can’t be revisited themselves but I can understand Tim not wanting to do so for fear of overall conflict of interest. Rumor has it he purposefully made a bad draft for this Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian in hopes the producers would scrap it Now we are almost 40 years later and it really should come as no surprise that the movie is just a soft reboot. Its a familiar premise: a loved one of Lydia Deetz is in danger and Lydia is forced to marry Beetlejuice in exchange for his help. There’s a scene where the characters lip sync to a pop song and a hidden antagonist that will provide Beetlejuice’s defeat in the end, although the latter they screwed up There were some interesting concepts introduced but they are secondary at best to the main plot and really serve as a means to get the main characters to a familiar setting and/or a familiar circumstance. I like the idea of Delores but she’s meant to serve the same function as the sand worm. Beetlejuice casually regards his ire towards both entities only for both to come back and literally bite him. In this case though it seems like Delores was meant to swallow his soul until at least one producer said “No wait! We don’t want to sequel proof this movie! Also let’s use a sandworm in this scene cus first movie.” “Beetlejuice is taken out by a sandworm again? That’s not original” “Fine! Have the sandstorm eat someone! Beetlejuice can be taken out by a deus ex machina or whatever the kids are calling it” I like watching Michael Keaton do his antics; it is problematic that BJ has the public reception he does given he’s a sexual predator. It does stem from the ridiculous cartoon show that has nothing to do with the movie as well as the universal attraction. It does have nothing to do with the plot and drags it. As for Catherine O Hara, she does the best she can but really has nothing to do same with Ortega and Ryder: they’re just stuck in a “mommy, you work to hard” storyline. Again, they had no idea what to do with the characters Rory is just there to fill in for Otho. Wolf is there to fill for Juno. Again it’s a soft reboot if ever there was one. What’s more is that if we’re going to revisit these characters then we’re are the Maitlands?! I’d argue they were necessary for some of the circumstances that play out, although then again they’re resolved rather quickly so I may be wrong. Nevertheless it was such a weird choice keeping them out of a sequel to THEIR story and the reason they give is so stupid I won’t blow up the comment section anymore so this will be the last point I make: they ignore the logic behind this universe. I know it’s vague a lot of the time in the first movie but the handbook of the recently deceased confirms that Adam and Barbara are stuck in their house for 125 years. I guess when that’s done they’re free to roam(?). Either way it was a rule that shaped the plot as a whole and the main conflict. With that said why is it that Charles when he dies just goes to the Netherworld? Shouldn’t he have been confined to the Maitland House himself? I could go on but it’s an uninspired mess that garners ratings in the cheapest laziest ways in terms of writing, cashing in on the preestablished popularity of the title character, while basically whiffing everything else
I don’t hate any of Tim’s movies until now This is the first and only movie of his I actually hated: I like Charlie and The Chocolate Factory because I hate the original story but the ending I didn’t care for I like Alice in Wonderland as a simple action adventure/coming of age fantasy. It’s not a masterpiece but that’s fine I’m not a musical theater expert so I don’t know what’s wrong with Sweeney Todd and with that I enjoyed it I don’t if Mars Attacks is one of the bad ones but that movie was great: it’s a delightful spoof of Earth Vs The Flying Saucers and seventies disaster movies with big names Dark Shadows was watchable. Apparently Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie are bad movies: those two are fucking classics for me! Maybe the fact that lightning turns different into different movie monsters but other than that it was a fun tribute to classic horror Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies: I can watch it on loop But I think I need to make a new comment
I see a lot of people decided they hated this before they'd even seen it. That almost feels normal now. Some people tend to be slightly overprotective of so called 'classic' films. I like the original Beetlejuice film, without ever thinking it's amazing. I went into this with a completely open mind. I personally thought it was better than the original. It's just easier to watch, and it's a lot of fun. I laughed more than I'd expected to. It was far more enjoyable. I've always felt that the original dragged a little, even though it has a shorter runtime that the new film. It will no doubt split opinion, but we can't all be the same. 🤷♂️
Valid opinion, I personally loved it. Have a few criticisms of my own, though, like I think it could've stood to be a little longer so that they could spend more time on Jeremy and Delores and all that. I definitely like the first Beetlejuice better, though. Whether that's nostalgia or better writing, I can't tell you. Liked that we got to see a little bit more of the town. What happened with Adam and Barbara to cause them not being in the movie could've been explained better, I think. Especially because they basically adopted Lydia at the end of the first one and were completely absent from the second. Astrid, Delia, and Lydia's relationships with eachother and the other characters could've been fleshed out a bit more. That said, I have to agree with other commenters that I don't really think that « Beetlejuice is a creep » is a great way to phrase that criticism when it's the point of his character. I mean, I'm not saying it's wrong to dislike it, but I think it depends less on if he's a creep as much as how well-executed you think it is. I am biased, though, just as you are (but in the opposite direction). I love the first movie, I grew up with it and think it still holds up well, and I was excited for the sequel, which probably helped in me deciding that I liked it. Not that the movie itself didn't play a part in that, obviously it did. The name is a mouthful, but it's also a reference to the whole « say his name three times » thing, so I don't mind *two* much.
Appreciate the effort but Keaton “falling flat” that’s a stretch maybe because it’s 30 plus years later he’s older. Energy changes. Your description of the general audience enjoying the movie is just that “the general audience” which means 99 percent of Americans who are not movie critics who don’t analyze everything they sit back and watch lol But yes I understand this is your job and you do a good job articulating your view
Some of these comments are really disappointing, guys, if you like a movie and someone else doesn't, it isn't the end of the world! I get it sucks that not everyone agrees with you, but there's nothing you can do to change other people's opinions on things :) If you like the sequel, click off this video and watch one about how someone liked it! Please don't harass anyone, it's really childish <3 Thankyou james for the honest review, I probably can't watch it so it's good to hear about the positives and negatives from your point of view!
I feel like a lot of the people here don’t understand it’s your job to review films. Do they have a problem with someone not having the same opinion as themselves? If so, then why are they watching your videos in the first place? Guess they love wasting their time attacking people for disliking something they like. It’s not like you’re saying that they’re wrong for liking this movie :/
@@TheBabyCaleb thank you for being understanding, Caleb! You’re absolutely correct. I’ve loved certain movies but respected reviews that go against what I enjoy. Film is subjective and that’s what’s so great about it!
I hated it so much that I wanted to walk out the last 30 mins of the movie. It was convoluted and tried to hard to be a Tim Burton film and used the nostalgia of the original to skate through plot development
Hi! But that’s what Film/TV reviews are supposed to be, based on the critics opinion. Did you hear the part where I acknowledged the crowd I watched the movie with laughing and cheering?
The second movie is not as good as the first one, but for quite different reasons. For one, too many characters and too many plots threads break the flow of the film.
🙏 Thank you so much! I appreciate you saying that. I won't lie to anyone about a film, so if I like it, I'll tell you and vice-versa. 🤣 Are you watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this weekend?
I'm glad your entire theater laughed! Interesting that you think someone with a different opinion than you deserves name calling. hmm. Have a blessed day, Jim Bob Joe!
You seem very upset, but in any case, this is offensive to so many and I would encourage you to mind your words because words matter. Have a blessed day, and I'm praying you find it in your heart to be more mindful and empathetic.
It was a weird nightmare fuel. Jenna Ortega little puppet they did you dirty. The movie felt like it was missing something. don’t know what it was but it is was just like bleh not great.
Just watched it. Was a brilliant sequal, so much fun. Whole cinema laughed throughout. It was cohesive, easter eggs but moved the story on. Its never going to beat the original, people need to be aware of that, but it was so good.
I get it. This movie is definitely not for everyone. Film is subjective so that's okay. I personally loved it and felt like this was more old school Burton. The first was still better, but this onevwas still a great sequel especially compared to many other sequels out there right now.
As a fan of Beetlejuice I feel the same as you :c and I'm sad. You don't need to be a fan of something to enjoy a movie so it's ok if you aren't. I think your review is objective even not liking it. I really love the first one not only because the visuals, I love it because the characters and the way everyone interact. I don't feel empathy for any character in this new movie, and I feel it lost a lot of the heart only giving us a lot of visual nostalgia and not a story that really works 💔
This film got very positive reviews by audience scores... This guy doesn't even like the first Beetlejuice film, so this review should not be taken serious by anyone...
I like Michael keaton seen every film,i love him as batman and i love his early stand up shows, especially the hey man segment. You already saw a little beetlejuice in him haha
@@ReelJames The whole thing. The aesthetic, the story line. Quirky scenes. I thought it was a fun Halloween movie. Definitely better than 5 night's at Freddy's.
If you didn't love the first movie then your opinion on the sequel is not needed or important. Not sure why you bothered making this review, it doesn't give people excited about the sequel a sense of what to expect. I would give both the original and sequel an 8.5/10. They both nailed exactly what they were trying to be and were a fun watch. Rating and judging a movie should be more about what the movie is trying to be as opposed to whether it's your personal preference.
Hi! Thank you so much for tuning in and watching. I'm glad you enjoyed "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice"! As a film/TV critic, it's my job to review movies, so why would I skip over a movie just "because"? If that were the case, you wouldn't have any differing opinions on movies. My job isn't to just get people excited, but if that happens with a positive review I drop, great!
