That's a good thought! They are aware of my timeline and several of the folks who work there and are involved with hiring have made comments about me moving to full time when I graduate. But It would probably be worth having a very open discussion about it!

They told me to walk around for sure! And I did my best with my situation. I just live in a very small apartment without a lot of space for walking around without driving myself literally crazy. And with the huge snowstorm we had, I didn't want to risk slipping on the ice. Also, the tenderness and pain made it hard to stand up straight, and it wasn't the easiest for me to walk for longer periods so hunched over.

Where can you get patterns from? I kind of want like a Hawaiian print safari jacket/army shirt (extra pockets!!) What i might do is just sew extra pockets on a Hawaiian shirt or get an army shirt and paint flowers on it
@MaddieMettler
@MaddieMettler 16 дней назад
I didn't use a pattern for this one, but I have used patterns from Etsy, thrift stores, big box sewing stores (wait until they're on sale), and free online patterns from places like Mood Sewciety. But your plan sounds like an approachable way to see if you want to spend the time, effort, and money into making a totally custom version!

Congrats on the award and on turning down the fellowship! Your reasons for turning it down make total sense and I’m glad to hear your advisor was supportive about it. I’m in a similar boat right now with feeling like I need to go into overdrive and get this thing done! It was also fun hearing a little more about your research! It’s always interesting how even with totally different fields a lot of the processes and overall language we use is the same.

Hi Maddie, I need your help. I’m confused between iPad 10 gen and iPad Air. Given my budget I can afford iPad 10 gen with Apple Pencil but on the other hand I can only afford to buy iPad Air without Apple Pencil. I really need an iPad for note taking, reading, annotating and modelling my thoughts. Would you be open to suggesting me which one to buy in 2024?
@MaddieMettler
@MaddieMettler 18 дней назад
I've never used the iPad Air so I can't say much on that front. However, I don't really see the benefit of an iPad without the Apple Pencil compared to a normal laptop (assuming you have one). The pencil is what makes it nice for taking notes by hand/highlighting documents etc. I have seen some folks use off-brand pencils that are cheaper than Apple, but idk for sure how nicely those work! So if you already have a laptop for typing etc., I would go whichever route allows you to also have a pencil of some sort.

Keep us updated on how it goes with the skincare! Idk about you but when I went to the dermatologist it was such a whirlwind experience! It seems like they must see 75 patients a day. I also feel for you on the laundry. We had to go to a laundromat when we lived in San Francisco. If you use the dryers, try to find one that someone just took clothes out of so it’s already warm! And the sound through the walls😫 apartment living is truly humbling. The stories we all have😅

Despite Bozeman becoming incredibly expensive in the last 8+ years I have lived here, I have somehow gotten *insanely* lucky with cheap rent, never paying more than $500 a month. Best of luck with your personal finance journey!!

How were you able to save that much money? Is it from the stipends? Or is there another source of income? RU-vid? Also, regarding the book- Wordslut. You definitely do a lot of up-talking, which makes your videos stand out from other channels that I watch. I was wondering though, did the book mention anything about down-talking? @MaddieMettler
@MaddieMettler 2 месяца назад
Omg congrats! That's amazing news! Basically I went through a phase where I absolutely didn't have good work-life balance and almost dropped out of grad school because of severe burnout. You can go back to some earlier videos on my grad school playlist to see about that! I established some rules for myself to split up work from life just because there is always more work to be done. I try to stick to a normal schedule of about 9am-4pm M-F at work and I don't work from home since I have a dedicated office and lab space on campus. I don't even really check emails at home unless the subject line makes it seem immensely important when the notification comes across my phone. Other than weekends, I don't really take time off unless I am traveling, which is one reason I travel more than the typical grad student might. The biggest help is that my advisor knows me on a more personal level and knows that taking time for family, camping, travel, skiing, etc is important to me. He also likes all of those same things and takes time off as well, so we have mutual trust that I am only taking time off when I know I am still able to get my work done to a high quality and in a reasonable amount of time. These videos might be helpful for you: How to stay balanced: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G-o17khGniY.htmlsi=EhnSuMhBen1CaxYG Do's and don'ts for your first year of grad school: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QB2p6UcxyVs.htmlsi=eMopzFA9yFns8ivR Should I quit grad school?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z9wfHE26vnQ.htmlsi=jmVZ2Bh0cM1O-AMW I finished my second year...am I still thinking of quitting?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gc8R2FF_Ld4.htmlsi=Z743dhdVNdcm-Fq6

Thank you for making this video! I feel this so much and I’m sure others do too. I also get bogged down sometimes feeling like I’ve postponed living my life by taking this path. I try to remind myself that I’m in it for the long term investment, and even though my 20s were spent in school, the rest of my life will be that much sweeter because of this investment. We’ll see if that ends of being true 😅 also can’t deny that as I near the end, there’s a big part of me that wants to do something entirely different than I had anticipated. Anyway, I’m rambling! Wow... I'm actually surprised you got through the video without shedding a tear or maybe it was cut out. Anyways, I'm glad you realized that great things are equally happening in your life. Also, I think comparison is a trait all humans have that operates/works like fear. It's both limiting and good for survival. Think about it. I actually sometimes also feel I'm behind in life. I'm convinced I want to do a PhD but getting admission has been difficult. For context, I clocked 30 last Thursday. My friends have high paying jobs already. In my country, to get such jobs, I'll either have to be an expert (which a PhD will help me with) or change careers. Point is, I think I can relate with that feeling of being behind in life even though I'm not in grad school yet. I think the best attitude to have is to be GRATEFUL. God has been good to us. P.S. Pardon the typos.

Hey. Your channel is very interesting. I want to discuss about the PhD program. How do you manage the tuition fees and accommodation?
@MaddieMettler
@MaddieMettler 3 месяца назад
So with most PhD programs in the US (and basically all STEM PhDs) the tuition fees are paid for by the university. They are either paid for by a grant that funds the research or by your position as a teaching assistant. The grant or your TA position is also what provides a stipend/salary to pay for accommodations, food, gas, etc. I have about 4 videos in my channel that discuss how I make ends meet with my stipend.

How do you deal with federal and state taxes?
@MaddieMettler
@MaddieMettler 4 месяца назад
For the majority of my program I have been a W2 employee of MSU, so the taxes are automatically deducted like for any other job. One academic year (fall 2022-spring 2023) I was paid through a fellowship which was 2 lump payments (one at the start of each semester) without taxes taken out. So I did the 1040 estimated taxes form from the IRS and paid quarterly taxes in fall 2022. When I did my full tax return for tax year 2022, I listed the fact that I had non-W2 income but had already paid some taxes. I ended up getting a refund that year and decided not to pay quarterly taxes for spring 2023. So when I did my tax return for tax year 2023, I just listed my non-W2 income and knew I would be paying taxes rather than getting a refund--so I just knew to keep a few hundred dollars available for the tax bill. I hope this helps!
