i dont get it, if the story is that this was going to be a powerbomb, then why is misawa waiting to get spiked? im watching at 0.25x speed and he didnt even tuck his head
i think this is the original driver but just make it more quick and this may also be the most dangerous variation of piledriver, and i think this more painful than the psycho driver
Small backstory: Kawada actually fractured his ulna 15 minutes into the match after doing a spinning backfist to the back of Misawa's head (I think). Despite this, he still wrestled for 30 minutes. He originally tried to go for a powerbomb, but couldn't position Misawa the right way due to his injury.

I'm sure they planned this, but this looks like the kind of thing you do when someone sandbags you during a powerbomb, and you just decide to go Lesnar on Holly on their ass and intentionally break their neck
Exactly, he broke his arm so he couldn't lift Misawa completely. Anyway, he continued to use it because it looks impressive. That's something you'll never see in WWE, but at that time in puroresu they accepted landing head-first or on the neck because they were considered spectacular moves that convey a deep sensation of pain. That was common in the Odo style. Today many wrestler thinks that this kind of moves are too dangerous.

I dunno if it's just me or if a cam flashed as he hit the mat but it almost looks like at the last microsecond, he tucks his head & avoids serious damage. Could be just seeing things but regardless; still a wild move/Kawada & Misawa are/were insanely devoted to their craft & it always showed.
