Rose had wealth and status, but because her mother was floundering with losing it she shoved Rose to the first man with high status to save their own. For all her wealth Rose had nothing in her own name, it would all go to her husband, and she had to smile and take it because if he abandoned her it would be entirely her fault. She would lose everything, and I guarantee her mother would not take her back because she would've been a disgrace. Sad, and she was only 17.

I do not believe that women, even engaged women, would engage in intamitacies with their partner, like Cal who wondered why Rose didn't "come to him last night" It would most likely be something saved for the wedding night to avoid scandal, I know it's a movie, but it seems like something inappropriate, though taking a second look at the scene the way Cal looks over to make sure Truney wasn't close before he talked to Rose might be an indication of what kind of man he is

Side note: It wasn’t just that Billy went off the script and flipped the table, it is that he went even further only a second later and got up right in Kate’s face, which put that age-old primal kind of REAL fear inside her, taking the scene to a whole new level. Smart thinking on Billy’s part. Proud of Kate for sticking through this incredible part the whole way through this. That takes so much courage to actually sit there with him so close to you while acting like a pure psychopath. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to do it. Been through traumatic stuff like that in the real world.

Billy Zane absolutely SOLD THIS SCENE with that unscripted flip of that table! One of my all-time favourite scenes in movie history. Nice to hear that Kate’s spitting in Billy’s face scene was ALSO unscripted. I was cheering for Rose the entire time lmao 😂❤️

If anyone has ever heard of intermittent explosive disorder, but has never lived with someone with the diagnosis, this scene encapsulates it well. I grew up with a step-mom who had outbursts like this randomly. Being at the receiving end of this anger at 6 years old was petrifying. I love this movie, but for years, I had to fast forward through this scene.

If you take this out of context it looks abusive, but Cal has every right to be angry. Rose is the sociopath in this story. She used the lifestyle Cal offered her and which she rejected to impress Jack and she was vindictive and abusive to Cal by shoving in his face that nude drawing with the diamond he bought for her, as if he tried to restrict her freedom, while she roamed around free all day... how cruel towards a man that loved her even in his own way (Cal was raised by rich, controlling uptight people as we see). It's like saying "so you bought a diamond for me to sleep with me and control me? ill have a homeless guy draw me naked, sleep with him cheat on you and then show you the aftermath". I had a guy who did that to me btw. It is narcissistic. She is disrespectful and immature, also a hypocrite. First off as we see in the beginning of the movie, Rose is acting all snobbish and unimpressed by Titanic which gives Cal the wrong impression that Rose wants more and more luxury which prompts Cal to buy her more and more stuff to please her; Cal is quite naive, not smart and sly like Jack and he doesn't know psychology, while Jack is smooth knows how to make rebellious wild Rose run for him, he became her mentor when he used a simple psychological method to talk her out of jumping off the ship, while Cal is pushing her away, he does not know how to win her heart. Jack is street-smart, he knows people. Cal was a rich boy who was taught that he can buy whatever he likes, and he bought Rose. So Rose purposely out of spite just to go against Cal, looks down on Titanic's size and luxury, at the same time Rose rejects the lavish lifestyle and looks down on the snobby rich folks, yet she offended Cal's move to book a trip in Titanic with her comment in favor of Mauretania. She hid from Cal the fact that riches don't mean much to her and let him believe that diamonds and riches is what she wants. Cal had no other way to impress Rose, while Jack worked his social skills, and like a good salesman he presented his drifter lifestyle as something cool and honorable. When Cal urged her to open her heart to him, she didn't give him a chance. Rose was rebellious to her mom and her mom was also using Cal and pushing Rose to use Cal for his money, instead of showing Rose how Cal is a handsome manly guy who has potential to be influenced positively. Why didn't she try to loosen up around him, instead of bickering about art and be stiff? Her mom's further mistake against Cal was presenting this marriage to Rose like a prison and a business deal which repelled Rose even more and made her biased against him. Rose truly drove Cal insane, she brought the worst out of him. Cal by the end of the movie seems changed, he shares a bottle with poor lower class people on the lifeboat, as if he realizes that we are all helpless humans at the end of the day, and he seems humbled, even searching for Rose in steerage even after all she did to him out of malice. Rose had no right to abuse his feelings and punish him like that, because he dared to "command" her and act like he owns her. Technically he owned her, given the era and customs and the fact that miss bratty Rose was financially supported by Cal yet she was ungrateful and snobby. Her little highschool fling romance with Jack was sponsored by Cal entirely, and Jack wouldn't have looked at her if Rose looked like him, a poor girl dressed in rags... Jack had the nerve to go way above and out of his league supposedly because she attempted suicide, while he knew Rose just craved attention "you wouldn't have jumped" and Jack was smart enough to take advantage of that and give her that playful childish attention teenage Rose needed... It all doesnt speak well of Jack, while Fabrizio fell for a girl of his social class which is more genuine and sincere of Fabri. After the drawing scene, Jack comments "wow you look nice" when Rose comes out in another expensive outfit, again, Cal is the sponsor. Rose just wanted to be competitive to Cal hence why she was doubting him and doing the opposite of what he wanted her to do like a rebellious teen towards her dad. Rose essentially wanted to live a teenage romance, wanted to party and be free to do what she wants, all that her mom deprived her of during her teen years, and Rose took it out on Cal who was a grown man and couldn't be a silly boy like Jack was. She also manipulated Cal and used his feelings for her (working against him), making Cal invite Jack to dinner which essentially dug Cal's grave. Cal hadn't realized that Jack is the actual competition, since he thought that Rose is into luxury and wealth (the impression she purposely gave him). Jack became her class hero/clown and he allowed her to feel like she has the upper hand. This backfired to Jack, she clung to him like glue - if she had remained in the lifeboat Jack would have survived. Rose was the narcissist, she loved attention "Wasn't I a dish?"...so she worked as an actress and didn't live a truly humble life. Jack was also sly, I've met guys like him. He sold his misery and lack of goals in life as freedom and spirituality, while he was a poker player who was hanging out with prostitutes and after Rose got impressed by his cheap charm, Jack subtly made her jealous with the nude French girls and made Rose compete with them on that cheap level that Jack presented as something so cool and badass.

When I watched this scene as a kid, I thought Cal was just being mean. As an adult, I empathize with him. Rose was engaged to him. Despite that, she spent considerable alone time with another man she just met. She then ditched the fancy dinner to do who knows what with Jack the whole night. Cal was right to question her fidelity to him. Rose later marries someone else and is blessed with children and grandchildren. Does she spend her final moments thinking about them? No. She instead reminisces over a fling she had for a few days 80 years ago. The whole movie is a sham of a love story.

But Cal was legit an abuser and he would hurt Rose. He didn’t treat her right, sure he gave her the diamond necklace but he wanted that more than her. Rose never wanted to marry cal in the first place. Her mom Ruth forced her to be engaged with him, so they could stay rich since her dad died. Cal caused Rose a lot of stress which made her almost kill herself. Like mentioned before she didn’t want to marry him and be his wife for the rest of her life which was why she was suicidal. Also Rose was a young teenager, she was 17 and Cal was 30, a grown man. They shouldn’t have been a couple at all, it’s just plain wrong. Jack is the whole reason why Rose lived a happy life and was still alive. He saved her twice, when she was about to commit suicide by jumping off the ship and he stopped her from doing it. And the ending when they were swimming in the cold freezing water, Jack made her go on top of something so she wouldn’t be in the water. Jack saved her from dying and from living a terrible life with her abusive fiancé Cal. Obviously because Jack died Rose had to find someone else. And she also says that she never spoke about Jack again, pnot even to her new husband either. She only talked about him because the crew who was discovering the titanic asked her about the story. And about the ending, the director said that we can think about whatever happened to rose. She either died or she was dreaming. I think she was dreaming honestly.

So you grew emotionally backwards lol. Cal is a controlling, terrifying and jealous asshole and the movie is meant to show that Jack gave rose the confidence to be herself and feel true Love and not feel beholden to a man she didnt ask for.

Apparently, tossing the table over wasn't in the script. This was Billy Zane getting back at Kate Winslet for spitting in his face, which I believe also wasn't scripted. But in all honesty, Cal REALLY wasn't in the wrong throughout half of this movie. Rose was engaged to marry him. It's basically the second half where I feel the writing went super nova on how much we needed to hate him.
