@@amandaeklund8136 I have a feeling Trudy knew exactly what happened. However, keep in mind that this was back in 1912. Things were different back then, and I suppose it wouldn't have mattered much if she actively told Trudy or not.
@@amandaeklund8136 Trudy was the maid. She couldn't tell anything or oppose herself to someone from the first class. At that time, valet, maid or butlers just were considered as low as... (i doesn't even dare to say). Any act of rebellion, the person was fired and most probably couldn't find a job anymore as those first class would made them a hellish reputation.
9050 Now after reading this and seeing the clip again, it really looked like a genuine reaction from Kate. Love improvised moments like these in films!
Honestly, the best way to get the most genuine reactions out of your actors is by not telling them when something is gonna happen. The same thing happened with the chest burst scene in Alien. The only actor who knew that was gonna happen was the actor playing the guy that it was happening to.
+chesiregirl The realism in the chest burster scene worked a bit TOO well. Actress Veronica Cartwright nearly fainted when she was sprayed in the face by blood when one of the hoses on the hydraulic "chestburster" broke. Another of the actors went to his trailer as soon as they said "cut" and couldn't speak for three hours.
I like how Rose tries to explain to Trudy that it was an accident. Good way to show the way abused woman covered up for their abusers back then and can even apply now.
@@shepherdboy9692 uuhhh, they hardly knew each other and he was already ordering her around and throwing shit around the room while terrifying her. Its pretty clear if they were to actually marry that he would only get worse. Please, just stop talking, you clearly don't have a clue that not all abuse starts from a man just punching a woman but can build over time from certain behavior patterns and this actor portrayed those actions pretty spot on. No one is cheapening anything but making an observation. Get a clue dude, you can talk about one persons abuse without having to extrapolate that to every abuse case in existence.
@@shepherdboy9692 😂😂😂😂 you sound like a 13 year old reading off of Reddit or google. I’m done wasting my time with your unintelligence. Peace out soy boy.
Could be possible. The painting scene, Leo got slightly nervous for a second he hiccuped by slipping out the word couch. Neither of those was expected by script but James Cameron loved it so he kept that. And possibly other things not planned by script.
The true relationship in this movie was the almost sisterly relationship between Trudy and Rose, in the deleted "Trapped" scene, Rose calls out for Trudy when she is feeling absolutely cornered. I just think it was a nice detail to show that Rose was different, and didn't treat people like the way she was brought up to treat them.
Because I am what? SICKENING she actually was calling her to help her to get of that dress, back then looking good with nice dresses was more important than actually feeling good in them and it wasn't an easy task to put them on without help such as of Trudy
The way Trudy comes running in and tries to comfort Rose, patting her arm and saying "it's all right miss" because she knows full well what's really happened - it's heartbreaking
"You will honor me by law, the way a wife is suppose to honor her husband," obviously Cal forgot about the part where it says "Husbands love your wives."
She wasnt forced. She found a way out At 17 years old. She was guilted. But She did cheat on him... abuse is not acceptable though. But looking At this as Im older, I kind of understand him not being happy.
Billy’s performance was outstanding, he acted so much like a controlling fiancé and he trusted himself and Kate to get the perfect scene in one take, so he flipped the table
I don't find him to be controlling at all. I find him to be territorial. He has every right to be territorial of his fiance and not allow other men to take her. He clearly loves her since we find out that she has nothing to offer (since her father lost all his wealth) except herself. She had nothing to offer except adultery.
@@joshhutchison6201 Improvised with Cameron of course. I've seen behind-the-scenes footage of it. Knowing in the original script it just said china and dishes flying off the table.
As someone who has survived this kind of abuse, I can vouch for Rose trying to make excuses and salvage the mess Cal made. Trudy was wonderful in comforting her. No man should ever think he has the right to act this way.
@@travisboutilier2220 ask yourself why would they be defiant rose and many other women are locked and chained with men like this. Men telling them they can’t drive or don’t have a say in anything you have a very 1800s way of thinking and talking about women rights
@@travisboutilier2220 who cares if they don’t know what they want, rose knows what she wants? Not to be with Cal but she has no choice then to be with him because of a society with controlling males like yourself
mousami Das rose wasn’t like any of her family or her “crowd” she actually cared about people who are less fortunate than her and didn’t want to be treated like a queen.
According to IMDB - The scene where Cal and Rose have a coffee and the scene where Cal has a tantrum and flips a table were ad-libbed by Billy Zane, therefore, Kate Winslet's reactions were natural.
I watched this as a kid and this scene scared me. So sudden and aggressive and seeing her collapse afterwards whilst trying to maintain to the maid 'everything's ok it was an accident'had me stunned into silence because I wasn't used to fiances, let alone adults talking to each other like that. I am still touched by the maid "it's alright miss" It's like she's seen this before and knows how to comfort the woman in a domestic situation?
@@Isaacthebiggestmoviefan57 I think I was too young when I'd watched this, to a kid a screaming adult is very intimidating, especially one that just seemed so restrained beforehand
look at the detail of imagery in this scene, Rose stands up to Cal finally & he shatters the table & all the glass in retaliation. It shocks her & you can see it translated on her face as she realizes this is what her life will be like. Trudy clutches the rose in her hand and doesn't pick anything else up, this is supposed to symbolise everything around Rose is shattering but she can still be saved. She has a small window of time to change her future.
Funny thing is it wouldn’t be like that at all. If she hadn’t been dancing with another man late at night (without his knowledge) he wouldn’t have been pissed at all. Fact of the matter is, she did many things in the movie that disrespected Cal. On the flip side, if she had gave in and tried to make it work with Cal, he would’ve spoiled her rotten and treated her like royalty.
I literally can't stop replaying that part. He was so angry though he was a douche he had a reason to be angry. He flipped that whole table with one arm😂😂buddy was heaaateeddd
For those who protect Cal. He literally says that she should sleep with him before the wedding, as a wife despite the fact that it was forbidden at the time. I'm not surprised that 17-year-old Rose chose to go to a party with a peer instead of having sex with a 30-year-old man who disgusts her.
It wasn't forbidden. Frowned-upon, yes, but not forbidden. If things had gone the way Ruth and Cal (but not necessarily Rose) wanted it, Cal and Rose would have gotten married soon, and it turned out she was pregnant already, the situation would have been similar to that of J.J. Astor and his wife Madeleine: By the size of her "delicate condition" you could tell they didn't wait till marriage, but they were rich and powerful and so nobody dared to say anything to them.
that was obviously a forced mariage like there were some at that time. Rose didn't love Cal at all she was only about to marry him to save her family for being broke. It his said a little bit later on the movie. And Rose felt like a prisoner with the same routine waiting for her for the rest of her life, Jack was her freedom from this superficial world
she was forced by her mother, so that they could elevate their social class. if it was a love marriage, she obviously would respect him and love him and he would do the same. it was very common in these times to arrange marriages since many viewed it as a business opportunity or a chance to become first class
As someone who's had past experiences with abuse, Rose's reactions were very believable and the shouting is enough to make you nervous in this scene O.O Cal going from calm to enraged in a moment is exactly the type of behaviour in abusers
This scene, as well as when Rose *feels* trapped (deleted scene), really shows what a solid talent Kate Winslet already was at that time in 1996-97 as an actress. In both instances she nails the performances that were necessary for the audience to feel sympathetic with Rose, her situation and desire to set herself free. Knowing the audience could have a different reaction, like what her character said when walking with Jack on the Boat Deck: _"you must be thinking, poor little rich girl, what does she know about misery?"_ With scenes and performances like these, the audience had grown empathy for her and the "virtue" making it feel right she would end up with Jack e.g. that she belonged with him.
Her acting was so on point that’s not even possible how good it is. Her reacting acting and interacting itsss so good and also his playing is aswell really good he is so underrated throughout the whole movie
It wasn’t until I was older, when I realized it. When Cal said, “I was hoping you’d come to me last night” and Rose replies that she was “tired”. Cal was hoping she would make love to him that night. This was also implied during the deleted scene with Rose and Trudy, as they are discussing being the first to sleep in the bed of the Titanic, and Cal walks in saying he would be Roses’ first.
She wasn’t acting when Carl/Bill flipped the table. That was Her real reaction as the table flip wasn’t scripted. Same way when Kate spat at Bills face on the lifeboat scene. That wasn’t scripted either.
Kate Winslet’s hair and Skin especially those rosey cheeks were like of those Botticelli’s Angels…. And the sunshine shone on hair and skin were exquisite.
To everyone saying Cal is just misunderstood and he truly did love Rose, I have to say this: yes, he did love her, in his own way, but that doesn’t make him a good person. It doesn’t excuse his bullying, domineering behavior. This scene also demonstrates that he will never see her as his equal, seeing as she’s required to “honor” him. Yes, technically Rose is cheating on her fiancé, yet it is a marriage that she never wanted or had a say in, and her ability to break away, choose, and prevail is what saves her in the end, not just Jack.
He is not a bad person, any guy would feel the same way if they were in his position. he wasn't doing any bullying and was just expressing his masculinity. that's because men and women will never be equal, equality is a lie. it doesn't matter if she wanted the marriage or not, she has to honor it.
His bullying can be excused when rose cheated on him, if she didn't cheat on him, he wouldn't have bullied her. And the fact that she never wanted to be in this marriage doesn't have anything to do with cal. Are you saying since she never wanted this cal should pity her, but the problem is CAL DOESN'T KNOW THAT. We as audience of the movie know because we watched from the beginning of the movie which shows all of the characters' perspective and views, perspectives from every angle. NOT CAL, how could he have known rose didn't wanna be in this marriage? Did she tell her??? No because as far as i know they purposely not tell him just to use him and get his money lol
This all happened because they were NOT BEING TRANSPARENT from the start. Rose should have told her that her mother force her to be in this marriage for his money from the start lol
'A little accident' such a prime example of abusive conditioning. Trying to hide what happened because you've learned to be afraid of what your abuser will do if word gets out about the way they treat you. Its so sad to hear her say it as well because its like she dosen't want to admit that this is her life and that she has become one of the thousands of women forced up the aisle to men like Cal despite having so much intelligence, strength and passion to give. Cal is even scarier when he goes from such fury to such composed calm. Psycho.
@@theofficialphoenixtv5765 --- I think the comment was in reference to other first class passengers. oh, wait..... Trudy was not a passenger.... I am wrong... lols!
My favourite aspect here is Trudy trying to at least give Rose a smudge of comfort after such abuse and shock... The fact she halts Rose trying to clear up Cals mess, and Rose then gives up... Woman to woman, from one toxic decided "class of wealth" to another that line alone is so heartbreaking.
Cal never loved Rose. He treat Rose like something what he own.He would proberly start beating Rose even if she never wouldnt meet Jack,Cal was controlfreek selfish and cruel man. Rose was just pretty thing he didnt care who Rose really was.
Rose was seen as a type of Trophy (the men were congratulating him at dinner on her being "splendid"). He didn't even know if she liked lamb and remarked (to Molly Brown) that he would have to "mind what she read" (after speaking about Freud) - as though she were some kind of child. That table toss showed that he could be prone to abuse (and women could not get out of bad marriages so easy back then).
I blame the mother for setting her daughter up with this man as it seems she knew the way he was, knowing he had money just so they could have a better living. I understand he's a rich guy and all but he didn't have to treat Rose like this and this showed that Jack was the right guy for her.
They needed a better living. yes he did have to treat rose like this, she deserved it for cheating on him. no jack is not the right guy for her, he has no way of providing for her and is a dirty pheasant.
@@travisboutilier2220 That's bullshit honestly the mother was honestly controlling and as well as a freeloader knowing she wanted to be taken care of and no, he didn't have to treat her like that after all he was an abuser. Rose came to the point knowing she made a mistake of being with him as he was a bully, a sociopath and a spoiled brat. Jack might've grew up poor and all but at least where he came from showed he knew how to treat people right.
@@JaredThaBoi No it isn't and her mother was not a freeloader. yes he did have to treat her like that, it was the only way to get her to listen. rose made no mistake of being with him, he wasn't any of that, it was rose that was. doesn't matter how jack treats people, he can't be with rose, he is not engaged to her.
Jesus Christ, I can’t even begin to imagine how Rose would live with being married to Cal, had she stuck with him. All I can imagine is how loveless of a marriage it would be. 😨
Most marriages are loveless. This is because women choose to feign love to have access to a man's resources who is significantly higher earning than her. Notice how the median salaries of men and women are almost identical, yet most marriages still have the man earning at least 30-40 k more
fun fact: this scene takes place on the port side private promenade, part of one of the two parlor suites on B deck. The one on the starboard side was occupied by the Cardeza family, while the one on the port side (occupied by Rose/Cal in the film) was in reality occupied by J Bruce Ismay. :)
That chilling venomous voice of Zane (Cal). I admit I always skip the part he selfishly takes the crying child to get on a boat. Disturbed me even today.
Apparently, tossing the table over wasn't in the script. This was Billy Zane getting back at Kate Winslet for spitting in his face, which I believe also wasn't scripted. But in all honesty, Cal REALLY wasn't in the wrong throughout half of this movie. Rose was engaged to marry him. It's basically the second half where I feel the writing went super nova on how much we needed to hate him.
Billy Zane was the perfect man for titanic . Kate and billy were really good acting together. James Cameron probably said billy flip the table that’s the scene we need and boom he flips the table for some laughs
Whenever I watch this movie and it comes to this scene, my rescue dog always runs and hides when Cal hits the table. This movie had great acting in it.
