Oh my gosh, thanks for posting this. I still have the VHS too! I saw the ad in Keyboard Magazine and sent a letter to Korg, per the ad, and got it through the mail when I was in High School and watched it over and over again. In those days, pre-RU-vid, you had no way to understand the sound unless you could find one in a store, so this was the way. Something about this video made it feel like surely everyone in the world wanted a Wavestation, even if they weren't keyboardist, synth nerds, or producers, it was just like...this is so cool. I finally ended up with the VST years later, but may still buy the hardware someday. Do we know who did the voiceover? Was that actually Dave Smith? Sounds not unlike him.
Awesome tutorial thx 4 sharing your experience. It’s there a chance to use the tremolo of the guitar connected in any other synth the way it sounds in the SY-1000 with the chromatic off in PolyMod? Or perhaps it’s better using a sound module with same 6 instrument tracks in Mono mode so you can use the whammy bar, like it bends the sounds in the SY-1000? Cheers 🍻
You can use the tremolo with chromatic off in Poly Mode as long as you only play single notes. If you want bends on different strings then you would want Mono mode.
Many thanks for this video. The Jennifer Batten Guitar is a great and huge instrument. I understand why she decided to choose to built by a luthier this one of a kind of guitar. Both sounds by GR55 and SY-1000 are fantastic (personally I prefer SY-1000... the tracking is the best of the Best). Phil. from Dunkirk 👍
This is very good. Thanks. It covers the "As It Is" solo which I think is the best use of the Roland midi guitar in any song, any time. The live Japan version is very good.
Thanks Wayne, this is very timely - I was testing a new GK-2B installation (on a 5-string fretless bass) over the weekend and I noticed that the jack connections were very noisy. De-Oxit to the rescue!
Me too. I wish the SY-1000 has more guitar based patches. That is what I liked about the VG-99. If I really want synth sounds I would just play a synth.
I was thinking about getting one of these and try to use the 5 pin with the midi on GR 55 , if that would work that might be easier than modifying the guitar
You would not get any benefit using the 5 pin Casio with the GR-55. The GR-55 does not work as a MIDI module. The GR-55 is designed to be used with a 13-pin guitar.
This is awesome to see! I’ve been thinking of doing this with an MG-510 I have that someone swapped pickups and modified the pick guard already. I didn’t realize the hex PU could go directly into the GK 3 board! I’m just torn over modifying this Casio bc it functions as a midi guitar still and seems like a waste to modify a working 510, although I don’t even use it for MIDI - right now it just sits mostly unplayed
Nice to know youre still making videos, WISH you were still making those 24 to 13 pin converters. Theres a guy in france who makes them, but the 400+ he charges for them is ridiculous...
@@WayneJoness You're welcome! I hope that when I manage to acquire some Roland guitar gear, I'll be able to modify it as you have and build or order some of the accessories you've designed!
If anyone knows of an LPK-1 available please let me know.. Been looking for one for quite some time to fix my G-808 which came with the LPK electronics removed...
I wish there was a plugin that did this. Or a way to connect a digital guitar midi thing such as Jam Origin into the boss tone studio so I could play around with this tone without having to buy hardware
I would go with the SY-1000, I think the overall sound of the SY-1000 is more detailed compared to the previous synths. Maybe better sampling rate or higher bit resolution?
I just got my hands on the vg99 finally. I have had the 8, the 88v1, just got the 88v2 earlier this year (big upgrade), but the pitch shifting always has a lot of artifacts in delay weirdness in it. I was hoping the 99 would be just slightly better, and as your video shows it's completely seamless. I turned into a Telly mode (guitar only) and made some recordings of open G tuning, and then pulled out my real Telly with open G playing through the exact same Amp Sim, and you can't tell which one was the e standard tuned guitar, and which one was the real telly actually tuned to open g. One would think Roland cloud would come out with this tech in their offerings and sell a slim line gk-usb model. The fact that they could do this almost 20 years ago, tells you that they can have something light years better now.
@lorenmorgan1931 The more I use other Roland guitar synths, the more impressed I am with the VG-99. The newer models are great, but overall the VG-99 is the best guitar synth I have ever played.
@@WayneJoness Yea, I think the only two things that I like about the 88v2 vs the 99, are the Organ seems a lot better (and this could be because I am not sure how to use the 99 yet), and the Sitar effect. The Sitar on the 88v2 is absolutely amazing, but it's kind of a let down on the 99 for some reason. Again maybe because I am configuring things wrong, or my sensitivity is set up wrong. I just got it a few days ago and honestly i am still playing on some heavily modified presets rather than factory. I will factory reset it this week and play around some more with it. I will say though, the pitch shifting on it is mind blowing. Now i wish that I could figure out how to configure the D Beam how to do only the B string. A lot I think I still have to learn. Also there is supposed to be a 12string effect for any guitar model, not a clue where that is at? lol
@@lorenmorgan1931 I think the 12 string effect you are looking for is in the alternate tuning section. Also, comparing the VG-99 to the VG-88 I find the Nylon guitar weird on the VG-99, sometimes the soft goes away when you are playing softly. I could never figure that out.
@@WayneJoness I have read about others adjusting the sensitivity in weird ways, but is there a way to make a limit on the low end of sensitivity? I need to really dive into this thing a lot more. I will say for buying an almost 20 year old device, its still very exciting to say the least. Its pitch shifting blows the 88 out of the water, and honestly pretty much anything I have ever heard aside from the new Fomo Virtual Jeff Whammy bar (which I want badly cause it can lock in at +/- steps), and the D-Beam can do some really cool locking effects. As for the 12 string I will turn it on this afternoon and check it out the alternate tunings. I just saw a video where someone mapped a 12string effect to everything. I will also try out the Nylon and see if I have the same issue. I think when I was testing the Nylon (and some other models) I had to add compression to get the volume stable. I will say the Nylon on the 88v2 is way better than the v1, but I didn't think as good as the 99? I have only had the v2 for very short time (2 months) and way more familiar with the v1. Things I did notice that are drastically better are the Strat models, especially in the 2/4 positions, and the acoustics of any type.I do wish, and maybe there is , can i assign the D-Beam to bend just one string? I have a setting on the 88v1 where I made a virtual B bender that I used for some songs live.
so is the bias the root note or does it just transpose the melody up? im confused on the concept of setting a scale without picking the root of the key and having trouble getting the specific scale i want
Hey, I am new to synths. I bought a Korg Prologue 16. Is it possible to get that sound from my Korg? If so, can anyone help me to set that Sound on my Korg just like shown in that great video?
@@WayneJoness I saw the full video before. It was 1981, recording Ghost in The Machine I think. Or 1982 recording Synchronicity? Sting is making demos on a 4 track with a black Strat too!
