great song. I am guessing it a fire on board on a wooden sailing ship he's talking about. I guessing the water is sea water not fresh water

This is the genuine article. My mum and my older sister would sing this while they did the dishes. I would roll around on the floor with a wild look in my eye. My little sister would look at me like I was mad. Even then she knew. Stanley Holloway was my first and maybe greatest hero.

I get furious when people say he’s an Elvis copycat. Eddie was a first-class musician. Played guitar, bass and drums. Besides, Elvis imitated the black man who wrote “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Return to Sender.” His name was Otis Blackwell. He also wrote all of Jerry Lee Lewis’ hits. You can hear him here on YT. By the way, I knew Otis.

It's too bad that Jimmie Driftwood never recieved much acclaim for his clever songwriting skills. He might not have been as prolific as Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie etc . but he obviously was a very clever and gifted songwriter.

That was the day of Buddy Holly's funeral, when he was laid to rest. You could see Eddie look up to the sky, I think this was very much on his mind. They were very good friends.
