It was fun, but expensive. I am planning on listing it on Bring a Trailer Auction soon. If you look through the playlist, you’ll see a video of it whipping a Boss 302 Mustang and a C7 Corvette at the drags.
Mostly new parts or used on Ebay. Quite a bit of fabrication. Spare tire well, driveshaft tunnel, fuel tank, turbo oil feed line, driveshaft shortened, Haldex wiring loom, ECU integration, and huge dent in your wallet. Also, APR no longer sells the Stage III kit. This one is for sale for less than you can build one like it.
@@mr.g.beetle I'd like to do something similar with a 5 speed manual Jetta Sportwagen TDI, wonder if parts from a wrecked Golf R would be cheaper. And if they would fit/what would need to be fabricated
It’s pretty involved, even with a master VAG Tech doing the work. Before you buy anything, have a technician lined up who can create and integrate the Haldex wiring into the system. Otherwise you’ll just be wasting your time and a whole bunch of money. Good luck.
I do still have the car, but it is for sale. Head over to instagram mr.g.beetle for total information on this car. There is a history page that explains the build and timeline. Enjoy
Sweet, genuine unique car. Is there a reason for the older engine being swapped in place? my 2012 Turbo I previously had shared the Gen 2 with the Gti. Im suspecting easier to swap for the Gen 1?@@mr.g.beetle
@@mr.g.beetle watching the auction on bat. Waiting on settlement money. I like this bug. It’s like a rallycross build for the street. These bugs went undefeated for five years in ARX and GRC. I have a blue one and stage one APR. Love the 12ups. Super cool build.
Hey! So I'm crazy also. I just bought a 2014 R-line beetle and I'm looking everywhere for someone that might know how to AWD swap my baby. How in over my head am I? Also looking for that sweet Foust GRC body kit, but that seems less possible. What do you think it would run me to awd a 2014? (no donor parts or cars to start with), and would it be similar to an '05 or way different?
The main thing to do is find a VW/Audi expert that can wire the Haldex into the system and program the ECU for it to work. No point I’d getting the mechanicals unless find that guy who can integrate it all together. The guy who built the car tells people who want to build one like it, “Just buy his, it will be cheaper.”
It's very hard to estimate cost not knowing the parts you would choose, amount of outside labor needed and level of performance selected. I have the car insured for $60K estimated replacement cost, however the turbo kit and exhaust system are no longer available for purchase. Good luck with your build.
If I could ever get perfect weather conditions and the setup perfect at the same time, I believe it would hit 170+ in the mile. But alas, wishful thinking.
For the Texas Mile, removing the AWD would save about 200 lbs and reduce driveline loss. Going back to the Beetle brakes would save another 30-40 lbs of rotating unsprung mass. Smaller diameter tires would save a similar 25 lbs and lower the effective gear ratio. Removing the exhaust - 40 lbs. Finding a lighter driver than my fat ass - 150 lbs. If I wanted to go all out and remove the seats and install an aluminum driver seat, maybe 70-80 lbs. 525 lbs less weight, much of which is rotating mass. I also discovered watching this video that I was only running about 26.5 psi of boost. I should have had it adjusted to 28 psi. The smaller diameter tires would lower the car an inch for less wind resistance. On a good day with less detrimental weather conditions, I believe the car would easily be in the 170's. But that is a whole lot of work for 3-4 runs in a land 1,000 miles away. Ain't gonna happen I'm afraid. I'm happy with 162 in 30 seconds in a daily driver. Also, how fast do you really want to go in a Beetle??? I think I've reached my limit.
@@mr.g.beetle Gotta be honest at these speeds loosing that extra weight might force ya to look into different aero modifications for downforce as it can get sketchy ... Awesome vid, Ty for sharing ... you made me miss my '12 Launch edition lol
@@PKDesigns2011 Thanks for the comments. I have sold the Beetle to Sean Page in Colorado, and he doesn't seem inclined to race it further that a ¼ mile. I believe Sean is the President of the Volkswagen Enthusiasts of Colorado. You can follow the bug further at govwec.org
Just thought I'd let you know this bug is on Bring a Trailer Auction with no reserve for 3 more days. Share with your friends. If one of them buys it, they'll have to let you drive it.
APR has a bunch of stuff for your car. You can find a dealer near you to help you out. The Super Beetle is actually for sale if you're interested. There is a history page on Instagram mr.g.beetle that explains the build.
@@mr.g.beetle absolutely love that. your car is insane. I still need to explore your IG and see the full scope when I have the time. I’m modifying a Passat at slow car power levels but looking for my next real/fast project.
I got a 2012 I’ve turned into my hobby. Lots of fun, just need to get a TCS button kit so I can really see the effects of everything I’ve done so far lol. Do you have a video talking about what you’ve done to yours?
Don't know. He's seen 162 and was still accelerating. Plus, it has about 60 more hp now. Would like to get it back to the Texas Mile soon. But that only tells you what it'll reach in 28-30 seconds.
That's what I said when I started tuning my wife's Beetle. Then I bought a Stage III for myself.... Many people I've talked to seem happy with a K04 upgrade and it seems very reliable and not too expensive. Good luck with your project.
Well one year later I'm stage 2 untronic ecu/tcu, cai, USP catted dp, newest dv with spacer, neuspeed chargepipes, and ARM fmic.. next is cts ko4 upgrade.. you were right.. I want morrrrrreee pppoowwaaaa..lol
2" lowering springs, Golf R rear sub-assembly, stabilizer bars, brakes. APR 19" flow formed wheels with Continental 255/30R19 tires. Tire size sets 176 mph top speed at redline. I'm going to go back to 18" wheels and 255/40R18 tires as I bend a rim every time I hit a bad pothole. This will give another inch of sidewall to absorb bumps and will set top speed at 183 at reline. I'm looking to fuel and tune for E-85 and hopefully get 100 more hp before I go back to the Texas Mile and see how close I can get to 170-175. It actually might go faster as a front wheel drive as the conversion to AWD increased weight by 260 lbs.
What would you like to know? Let me say this first, to make it work, you have to have someone who can program the ecu to make all the parts work together. If you can find the Instagram account Mr.G.Beetle there are a lot of pictures and a full description of the car.
@@sirpants4282 1/8th mile 7.555 @ 93.99 mph, ¼ mile 11.85 no speed given, but the my nav said 116 mph. That's with a 315 lb driver. Obviously it would do better with 150 lbs lighter driver.
