Hello! I'm an industrial designer and I break down my design process in videos including tutorials, walk-throughs, and how-tos. I also share my thoughts on the wider world of design, and give tips for people breaking into the industry.

I've worked in London as a designer for the last 5 years, and I also run the Sam Does Design Instagram page, where I share behind the scenes content.

Hey, I'm trying to follow this tutorial, I've made a book that is supposed to be printed, BUT I want to make a digital version of it too, which is quite big, and I think this is because it is designed as a 21x21cm, and that's probably way too big, and when I reduce the pages, the layout of my multiple images changes, but I don't want that, I woul like the image to be smaller as well… But when I make the pages smaller, only the pages shrink, the images stay at the same size, which is very annoying considering I have 270 pages and 1500 pictures, I'm not going to resize each of them… Is there a way to make the document dimensions smaller without messing with the design?

That drill looks like it was designed by someone who had never used a drill. Are a lot of industrial designers this removed from actual work?

My late teenage kids don’t cant think of ANY vocation. Im an Architect and they’ve only become cynical about Architecture because they’ve heard me complain about how little we are paid compared to trades. Perhaps ID would be desirable for them? However I wonder how AI will affect it? Any ideas anyone (for an over the hill tired father)

History seems to grow down, so you need to scroll all the way down to get to where you last actioned. Should be building the history list from bottom up so your last actions are easily found at the top of the list. Quicker and easier i would say.

That’s an interesting way of framing it. You can think about it like writing instructions to the CAD program. It’s like writing on a sheet of paper - any instruction you start with is at the top of the sheet, and each new instruction is on a new line.

@@SamDoesDesign yes but you build objects from the ground up. Also its easier to search from the top level and more likely to be where you want to edit last minute changes.

This software is great for making props, and clothing for your vrchat model. Just grateful that it works importing/exporting between Blender/unity.

TBH I was a bit shocked by your view and criticisms of HCD, not because they aren't valid, but by how they don't reflect the broader picture at all. I feel like your college/professor had a biased and limited perspective. Firstly, It's not something IDEO created. Sure, they are key evangelists for the approach, and particularly within the Industrial Design space, but they are not where the movement started, nor represent the only major players. Whilst it's fair to criticise the earlier work of Don Norman for the over focus on usability, ergonomics, and interaction mappings, his later work on emotional design corrects this reductive early view. Many other innovations, and broadening of remit, has occured in HCD and UCD since. This includes cognitive science, psychology and social factors, emotional, brand, sentiment and many more complete and holistic human factors taken into consideration in the HCD process. Many, many large, medium and small companies utilise an HCD approach across an array of design fields, and include emotional considerations into the mix.

I don't understand - I do the exact same setup and the light is INCREDIBLY blown out. I reduce the brightness to 40 and it looks almost more normal, but it's still blown out in the front and quite dark in the back. The only difference I have is I created a white "photo studio" box with a seamless back wall. Why does this not work for me?

Great video! I too started off with sketchup. As designers, there isn't much need for us to work in heavy engineering software such as Solidworks. I have found Sketchup and Blender to be the perfect combo for producing anything from large shipping container port scenes to ceramics. I honestly think that Sketchup does not get enough credit. The only problem with Sketchup is the polycount. I tend to build my scene 'architecture' in sketchup (because it's fast and accurate), I then assemble the scene in Blender. Blender takes some time to set up, but once you build a template, it becomes just as fast as Keyshot, without the scale constraints, and infinite animation capabilities.

Smooth Shade in Blender is a "cheap" vizualisation trick in order to save hardware headroom in polygon heavy files. It does not alter the geometry, or communicate with the render engine. If you want the object to render smooth in Blender's render engine you need to use the subdivion (render). I don't think this feature would make any sense in Keyshot. The blender to keyshot plugin brings models form blender into keyshot.
