Beyond sketching and CAD modelling, what is the purpose of industrial design? What is the end goal? I've had a go at answering, but there's no one correct answer! So I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments as well.
I’m an architectural designer with education and years of experience in that field, plus I’ve done furniture and millwork design of low production quantities. I’ve recently have turned my attention to product design, and the differences I’ve noticed are quite profound from architecture. Something that’s mass produced takes a lot more thought and planning. The processes of production are of much concern. Material availability and cost are primary constraints too. I can do something like design a house that cost 3x the average and takes about 3x the labor to build, and that project can be done successfully. But if a industrial design for product has 3x the cost, then the company making it is likely a sunk ship.
THANK YOU, Sam. I feel fortunate to have just entered the industry when industrial designers like you are increasingly more vocal about their value and role. You endured some of the struggle for us. 🙌
I literally just discovered this career path today through my career advisor and through what she told me about it, I might’ve found the career I want that I never knew existed. Not only has it given me a WHOLE new appreciation for my belongings and surroundings, but it’s also just given me more inspiration to potentially lead a career as an ID. I’ve actually been doing it without even knowing. I always liked to redesign cars in my pastime, albeit most of them are sketches and doodles lol. I like to go into the details such as the headlights, door panels, seats, dashboard, etc. I’ve spend hours upon hours trying to think of new designs, what the buyers already like and what would make it even more desirable. Maybe adding in retro features while refreshing the look to attract buyers old and new. It made me realize that I’ve been doing it since childhood. Drawing washing machines, traffic lights, etc. Their designs just fascinated me and maybe this is the career I’ve been looking for. Almost feels a little too good to be true but there is not one career so far that has felt as familiar and fun as Industrial Design. I know it’s never gonna always be sunshine and rainbows but if it means putting my passion to work, I’m willing to give it a shot.
I literally had the same realization in my second year of civil engineering. Coming to the end of my 3rd year now and I just submitted my application to an industrial design masters program. Go for it!
@@joy_ndutadid you get accepted into the masters? Hope it worked out for you 🤞🏼👀 I studied Engineering and Business and now also want to pursue a Masters in ID or Product Design
Great summary Sam! I see Industrial Design as a bridge between a technology (high tech/low tech) and people, and so empathy is a huge component of being able to design well. Love the comment about "defining a zeitgeist" 👌
Designers are shaping the world we live in. its Not only the visual/physical awareness to objects in a city or wherever, they also create the psychology we have, our routine comfort. I hope you understand what i want to say with that.
I always have trouble describing what I’m studying to people outside the industry. I think design in peoples mind goes one of two ways, graphic or fashion. When really industrial is the most broad, its everywhere
As someone who's trying getting into good colleges to learn Industrial design, finding this video is a Godsend. Lots of things I wish I learned way before, but hey, never too late!
I had no idea about ID, randomly i stumbled upon the topic. Now that I have a very basic idea on industrial design it will give me an added perspective on how i look into anything and everything
Great content Sam. I've been saying lately that people don't understand the value of good design, until they've experienced bad design. The challenge is to educate clients so all the money they would have wasted on bad design is instead invested in good designers.
Great video Sam! You really managed to put the right words on the need for design ! I loved the green sock hahha I think design is also a very powerful tool for change!
fantastic presentation. though I must say the green sock puppet now reminds me of the borzoi meme so honestly if it was cream with a black toe section, it could sell well
thanks for your nice video. i like to study industrial design but for entering a college i need an artistic portfolio. but i how no artistic experience. what is your suggestion?
Industrial design, is a field within the greater discipline of Design. It's industrial because it's the design of products made by industry. Products made in a factory in mass numbers. It sits between disciplines like architecture and fine art. It's frustrating to me how many confuse industrial design with things like industrial engineering, and industry related activities. It might be easier had it simple been called product design. There's even an ad here on you tube for "industrial design services" that is not about products but about factories and other industrial functions. LoL. So much ignorance...
Industrial Designers create objects that can be used in the real world through a creative process and collaboration with a team to see if it can find a place to exist in the world
Hi, I am aspiring designer. I’ll be joining college soon and though I prefer industrial design however with time tech has been taking off so I am inclined towards Ux/ui too. I would love som pe insight on the future scope by anyone. Also yes very efficiently explained Sam
It’s definitely true that UX/UI has grown as an industry over the last 10 years, but people will always need physical objects. There is still a future in industrial design! I think the main thing is that you work on projects that interest you. Only you can decide which is for you. Have fun!
Is product designing is only about digital product like app or web design .product designer can't design physical products ? Physical product only designed by industrial designers I have to chose my profession so guide me please ?
Before I think this is something I would love to do , I already do it everyday for fun After I now understand that a product needs a meticulously fine process to be successful after production 😅ty
Things are getting more collaborative and it’s interesting how technology is enabling new ways of working globally It’s definitely worth studying industrial design if you’re passionate about the thinking behind designs as well as the production!
It’s possible! You may need to re-train with either a masters or an internship to learn more about human factors, semiotics, usability etc. If you’re interested about “why” people use products instead of “how” they get made, then it’s definitely possible!
I think their job in my country is being unemployed so i would like to be but even we have universitys for industrial designers (and i preparing for the uni exam) no one cares about they (looks like) so.
That’s a great question! It comes from experience of knowing other products out there in the same market, plus which other objects from different markets can be borrowed from. If I was to make a mood board for a new chair design, I might look at automotive design, architecture, sculpture, and anything else that isn’t a chair. Maybe I should make a video on this!
And people I mean the so called smart STEMines think science is everything lmao. There's high contribution of arts, commerce everything we use! There's not only science/engineering. The things you are showing in this video almost 80% people gives all the credits to engineers... they just ignore the fact that there's a whole design process (arts), marketing innovation, costing (business/commerce).
Yes! I definitely think it should be called STEAM instead, to include the arts People have been trying to rename it for years but I don’t think it’s stuck yet
@@SamDoesDesign We don't have to rename? Industrial Design is under ADSS (Arts, Design and Social Sciences). Thing is Arts and Commerce needs more recognition than science.
Lol.....This hoity toity talk. We produce what marketing tells us to produce, and it's often as cheap as possible and ends up in a landfill after 3-4 years.
I’m sorry that you feel this way about your job and our profession. There are jobs out there where that’s not the case, and you can define what you design
Industrial designers? They design stuff and then the accountant makes it fail by strangling the budget on making it..! Don't make it to good.. Everything pretty much mass produced follows this principal, I know because i'm a former Industrial designer, Now i design and make my own things and they are not built to be rubbish.. thanks for the video sam :)
@@SamDoesDesign : That is true... And reminds me of my ow motto which is: "All Artists are creatives, but not all creatives are Artists". By the way, I am an Artist...and having good visual opinion I design furniture too. Thank you for your videos. 👌
thanks for your nice video. i like to study industrial design but for entering a college i need an artistic portfolio. but i how no artistic experience. what is your suggestion?
