This is absolutely amazing. Do you remember that episode in America's Next Top Model where they did blackface on the contestants for a photoshoot? They had professional makeup artists with years of experience creating the looks, and the models still very obviously looked like white people with brown makeup on. But this sucker believed he's gonna walk into a drug store, grab some products, nail it, then fool people across the country. Gosh, I would have loved it if he made this into a documentary instead. Imagine all those confused people around him while he genuinely believes he is achieving something.

I'm very glad that this book got me into reading. I was someone that thougth that books were boring and i hated reading, if was starting a book i would probably needed three months for reading a 200 pages book, but then i heard about that book on tiktok and because i loved Sam on icarly and because the topics that were discussed were interesting for me i decided to try that book, not only because i was interested into reading it but also because i had this reading class project were every month my class must read a book and then at the end of the month we all had to talk about the book that we read that month, and beacause i was in 8th grade, and couldn't read any other Diary of a whampy kid anymore, i picked that book for that project but also because i wanted to try that that out, and it literally got me into reading, it was the best book i have ever read and i literally started to read. I loved that book so much and i still love it
1:02:41 I've never actually read Colleen Hoover, I just like ur videos, and either way I find myself surprised to be defending her a little bit vis a vis the lead guy seeing red and blacking out and blah blah blah. I have a history with that Type Of Guy and I think that this is actually an accurate depiction, not of a real disorder, but of a real *excuse* that abusive men use. There's a book I think called "Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Abusive Men" by Lundy Bancroft that discusses this exact excuse being used by abusive men in a therapy setting. A lot of men claim to lose control of their actions and black out around the abusive act, and what Cindy pointed out as an inconsistency in the disorder the characters in the book are describing - that Ryle or whatever doesn't do this in his professional life or other areas of his personal life, only with his wife - isn't necessarily a point against Hoover's depiction, it's actually just... a valid question that you would ask that man in a therapy setting to start unraveling the fact that his bad behavior is not some temporary psychotic disorder. In Lundy Bancroft's book they discuss how in therapy, men might say they lost control when they broke all their girlfriend's things, but then the next question for the therapist is, why did you only break HER things if you didn't have control? Why didn't you break any of YOUR stuff? The man might say he saw red and lost control when he knocked his girlfriend to the floor, but then the therapist can ask: well, if you were out of control, why didn't you kick her in the head when she was down there? Why didn't you kill her? Turns out the real answer isn't that he didn't have control. Because there were still limits he was unwilling to cross in his rage, things he wouldn't do because they would have consequences for him, legally or personally. The problem is just that the line where he considers his behavior to be *too far* isn't at hitting her. And I think this is actually what Colleen Hoover is trying to depict with that scene, to her credit. Omfg I hated this stupid book. I legit scanned over the sex, it was so dumb and ridiculous/graphic in the worst way! The book seemed like it might go somewhere good and I was horribly mistaken. We read this book when I believe I was in 5th grade. I remember loving it. I'd have to reread it, but based off the consensus I already have, the movie did not do the book justice.

What sucks is that the descriptions in the books kept drawing attention to racialized features, so in addition to the commentary on beauty standards, you also can see the aspects of cultural genocide. Scott Westerfeld's married to and Australian activist. The kids being raised to label their ethnic features as ugly is part of the point. And a good adaptation would actually care about that.
I feel like the reason why people thought its a romance book prior to how it is being advertised, was how booktok made it seem to be about atlas and lily when that was not the main focus... That is how I was misled to read the book and left disappointed. Yea, some aspects of it came from their history and how he was there for her through what she was going through but I don't know it was misleading...
...I also had a problem with Hoover making him a Neurosurgeon with a super rich brother. I KEPT being taking out of the story as I couldn't stop thinking, this is dude is getting WAY more chances than she would give a 4th grade English teacher or a garbage man (I realize they abuse too, but wealth should be removed from the book for story telling reasons). I would not have had an issue if Lily showed some insight into this w/her internal thoughts. But no she just loved him? Why? Her first thoughts (like Leonard first meeting Penny) was that he was hot and looked rich. Even the mom gushed when she heard he was a doctor. This was a major issue for me. He was controlling in nearly every scene. She had NO agency until the last 5% of the book. He constantly told her what to do and she said ok.
Hoover also violated the Chekov's gun issue when Lily wondered if the sister had a concern about her dating her brother, or vice versa. In other words, I spent the last 85% of the book waiting for it to come out that the sister knew he was an abuser (not just a selfish jerk) and never told Lily to stay away from him.
