Is this author's husband trashing her novel on Goodreads? Maybe, but there's a bigger problem here.

@FFKonoko
@FFKonoko 7 месяцев назад
Well, that technically isn't the smoking gun that it's the husband...a random commenter saying that she sounds like that type of person, when she literally did, is an unusually accurate perception, possible too much to be without actually knowing she did...but still isn't 100%. 😅 She IS, so she actually might just sound like that enough for a random person to say that? The smoking gun would be if the person saying that was proved to be her husband.

There was this case of this teenage boy writing a book and self publishing it, I think. His father or uncle or something gave it a low rating because the book wasn't a genre he liked. There was the guy who wanted to know his girlfriend's fake name that she wrote her erotic stories under. He wanted an apology from her and for her to send him her name so he could find her books. See this is my issue. Women are regularly killed and abused by men to the point in the US we have an internationally noted problem with femicide but if you don’t want to be seen as paranoid, you can’t say anything when you start seeing signs something is off. Then once it’s too late somebody says why didn’t you see all the red flags and run. It’s not new that men abuse, cheat on, stalk, psychologically abuse, harass, and even kill women. So I don’t know that this is true but I know we live under patriarchy and I’d like some balanced acknowledgment of we just don’t know enough before she’s a paranoid woman with a superiority complex. She’s obviously angry so yes she dissed him. I might diss someone too if I thought they were taking out some personal failures on me and my career launch. Men have superiority complex built in and it’s all over the book community but it’s not called out as much as it’s agreed with even by women. I would even venture to wonder what he has done and said to make her this nervous about him and what about those reviews put her in the mind of his writing, as a writer, I imagine she knows how to tell when something is at least likely written by the same person even if they use multiple accounts. If men can kill women with HIV on purpose, this isn’t the oddest thing I can conceive of. And if it is just someone worrying too much, I still think it’s a sign something is off in that relationship that trust and security aren’t a norm. They might need counseling. Who knows

this is all assuming the initial letter is real, because its very possible that it isn't: WHY does she suspect her husband? as you mentioned, i expected the letter to expand at least a little bit on what he's done to cast suspicion on him, things he's said or ways his behavior has change, because "my husband is a constant figure of support in my writing career" to "i think my husband is leaving hordes of negative reviews on burner accounts" is a huge leap to make. but there's no explanation of her suspicions. when the letter-writer brought up that she's snooped in his computer before and that obviously made him upset, i then expected her to expand on why she was doing so in the first place and what that resulted in; does he actually have a history of duplicitous behavior or was your earlier invasion of privacy completely unfounded? because if your earlier invasion of privacy was ultimately for nothing and your current suspicions have no basis, it kinda sounds like you have major trust issues and you need to actually TALK to your husband and probably also a therapist about what's causing this seemingly unfounded but also seemingly constant belief that your husband is out to get you, like... assuming the letter isn't real: the cut should take these things into account next time they want to concoct a fake story like this :-/ more details might make it more realistic

Concerning the "My Mixed Feelings About Negative Reviews" section, I think Cindy pretty much nailed the human nature aspect of saboting other people's work due to the popularity/success of the work. Some people have to be contrarians for the sake of being a contratrian and the hope of being perceived as more intelligent than the general populace. (When in reality, it's just embarrassing half the time.) For example, while not a book, I always think of Arcane. Critics and viewers agree that show is perfect or near perfect (100% on Rotten Tomatoes, 96% on Google Reviews, etc.) And yet it still has negative reviews, not many, but they exist. So, if it helps any writers or future writers out there, don't worry about the bad reviews - sometimes you can learn from them, sometime you can't. You can't please everyone.

I know it's totally random, but eh, I love what I love 😂✌🏼

I do think, as an author, it IS important to have an eye on your negative reviews. I do it myself because I can handle it - and I never engage - but I do think when you see trends about things readers don't like, it can help inform your craft moving forward. If you can't handle doing it yourself, definitely have someone you trust who can sift through to find recurring trends that readers aren't liking (poor editing, story construction, characters likeability, etc). They are a tool for authors in that way, especially indie authors, but they are *not* for engaging with, ever! (The only time I've ever engaged was when someone said they were upset my books were Christian books with cursing when they've never ever been marketed as religious AT ALL - and I wanted to inquire further to see if there was something going on with the listing, etc)
@withcindy

i totally agree! i think authors should avoid it if they mentally cant handle it. but if they can, then sure!

Also, I do not know whether in the US it is also illegal, but at least in my country, spying on your partner's computer without their permission is illegal. It is an abusing and controlling behaviour. If you can no longer trust your partner, just leave/divorce them. Trust is the most fundamental block of a healthy relationship. If you are a point in which you "need" to check your partner's devices without their permission, just leave: If you were right, you are going to leave anyway, and if you are wrong, you aren't deserving of the trust that you have just betrayed.
@boo2424

Okay but why are you locking up your devices? Something to hide perhaps? Seriously suspicious when you won’t hand over your phone to your partner

I'm with you. I think it's fake. But if it were an actual letter, the advice to go snooping in his personal stuff isn't cool at all. If you don't trust your partner, ask yourself why. If you suspect they are capable of doing something like this out of jealousy, ask yourself why. If you believe they would do something like this, pack your stuff and leave.

Conspiracy theories: 1. The advice columnist knows the author and was somehow involved with deciding that the husband was responsible. The vibes from both are post-wine, post-internet sleuthing hype session where the facts don't matter. Saying that her husband could never dream of her success sounds like something a friend would say who wants to be supportive and doesn't like the husband. Only excuse for this crazy advice. 2. The advice columnist is also the author and is hyping her own self. 3. The quoted author is the advice columnist. 4. Everyone involved is just Kat Corrain trying to make leaving fake reviews normalized and draw attention away from herself.
@Chachixo
@Chachixo 7 месяцев назад
Yeah the story didn’t sound real to me either and I was hoping that the advice columnists reply would provide something other than “if I hadn’t check to see if it was true…” The advice was also so bad. It seemed to be in the opposite order it should have been in and I thought the writing style was too casual. Like I get it’s meant to be personable but there was no air of authority there - it just read like an internet comment. I guess that’s The Cut’s thing now since their financial advice columnist also seems ill-equipped lmao.

Seems fake just because the person responding is just acting so fucking dumb like they came up with the finger snappy cool girlie responce to the idea of this question and after writing that realised it sounds insane to motivate someone to invade another's privacy especially after said person said they had a history of that to justify them not looking and going to the writer. Irs just so.... "If I was their I'd say the coolest comeback ever!!!"

I'm just high enough to think about the fact that the literary community, while having developed and changed drastically with technology, has not changed from the 1800s drama shit storms with pamphlets about high society stupidity that the literary community is known for. TLDR: lord byron would be proud of what we've built.

I don't think author's reading reviews is a bad thing. We learn through feedback, author's are no different. The problem is, in today's age, society is full of berry snorting karen's who both write and read reviews. Gone are the good ole days where adults could give and take constructive criticism. Now they all throw toddler tantrums, trying to get that viral video, the most likes, or be part of the 'crowd.' Pathetic really.

That advice columnist was so over the top with her "advice" like- How is it professional to tell someone to *not* hire a PI because destroying the trust your relationship is built on is easier and cheaper?? Anyway i was suspending my disbelief through the letter but the response was actually what made me think it was fake- obviously they were playing it up and overexxagerating Also *oof* imagine casually saying that your husband will never be as successful as you, thats gotta hurt, what happened to mutual support?? I have more faith in my writer bestie's *future* yet to be written book than this lady has in her husband

The Cut response is insane. I get the writing style is meant to be entertaining but I'm so over this internet style of relationship advice that boils down to "burn every relationship to the ground, its self care ❤️". Even if you're in a situation where ending the relationship is warrented, don't tell people to go into the situation panic first. "Yes, the room is on fire! Scream, run, hide!"
