just did the job today. 1999 avalon. the old resonator just finally crapped out completely, i procrastinated for too long. i used the first digikey link to buy the resonator- i got like 10 of them for good measure. the murata electronics, "CERAMIC RES 4.0000MHZ 47PF T/H" - CSTLS4M00G56-B0 - 490-7036-ND. seems to work perfectly. actually instantly cleared the engine light, though that might be because of the battery being disconnected then reconnected. works perfectly now. now i can finally drive my car in the afternoon and it'll function normally (i live in florida). but for anyone worried about the old resonators being discontinued and if the ones available now still work, i can say the first link murata one from digikey works on my machine. also be careful while soldering i burnt my pinky lmfao
I found this video a couple years ago when having this issue with my JDM Camry Gracia and couldnt find the issue with all sensors sending and reading properly, so I got the resonator and all to do this repair, but never bothered to replace it because I'm lazy. It finally conked fully out this week, just replaced that resonator and BOOM everything is perfect again. You are a godsend with this video my man, if it wasn't for this, I'd probably still be losing my mind trying to find out what's wrong.
I bought a Haynes repair manual I found on eBay used. I believe Haynes only published vehicles for the US. You might find the info you need from a Haynes 1997 4-Runner manual.
Hi Jeff. Any idea whether this solution works for a 2004 Lexus GX470? There seems to be a common scenario for that vehicle where the speedometer is stuck at 0 but the odometer continues to function (and thankfully the transmission shifting also behaves itself) which is of course different to the 3 symptoms you've described. I'd give it a try only I have to order the part first and without having taken out the cluster yet I can't site the component to make sure it is the same value - so I guess my first question is do you know if the component is the same for that model vehicle? Or anyone able to direct me to a circuit diagram (or photo even) for the GX470 speedo itself?
After 2 speed sensors and checking for loose fuses I jumped on RU-vid to find this and similar videos. Thanks Question? Soldering the blue ceramic resistor on the opposite side? Does that interfere with assembly? Seems it could.
My speedometer works good, but my odometer doesn’t show all numbers, if my tundra has 123,467 miles it shows 1 3,46 incomplete does this fix this issue ? I don’t want to buy a new cluster just for that
After removing the bad capacitor, the new one can be installed on either side of the electronic board. But it’s much easier to install through the back.
I just replaced the instrument cluster on my 4Runner since the last had a broken screen. Everything seems good except the odometer is blank. Trip A and Trip B both work. Any ideas? TIA.
There’s multiple ways, depending on what tools you have available. It’s possible to use just a hammer or mallet alone to lightly tap them in. I’ve heard of people using a socket or pvc piece of the same diameter of the seals to help evenly apply force on the seal to help it fully seat in place. If I remember correctly, I think I only used a small hammer to carefully tap all around the seal. It’s not the easiest method, but it’s better than hammering against a flat head screw driver which could slip out of place and cut through your seal. I made that mistake and had to buy another set of tube seals lol.
@@damacknificent151 it’s possible that some variation of the number of brake pedal presses may help clear the code if the part swap was a success. If that doesn’t work, then it may be necessary to use a special scan tool that can recognize Toyota abs codes, or further diagnosis from a mechanic.
Yes this worked! I changed my front driver's side cv shaft and hub and bearing! It ended up being just metal fillings on abs wheel speed sensor! Just clean it up ... Did your rest method. Vala
Hello , Jeff , thank you for responding. basically . I was changing a sparkplug of a V 6 Rx 300 0f '01. the sleeve of sparkplug at the back ,broke off where the hard palstic , about 1/2 inch. I have the sparkplug out . I did everything possible to pull it out . after lubricaring with silicon , it doesn't even turn . I was thinking of drilling it to pieces, and after that , vacuum inside . will it work? Thanks.
It’s hard for me to picture what you have going on. I would get a knowledgeable mechanic friend to take a look or send him pictures of your current situation, then see what he advises to do. You don’t want to do anything that could cause any pieces to fall through the spark plug hole and into the engine.
hello, with th 6.75 ft/lbs torque on your valve cover i can still see the the gasket , I used the blue gasket and its visible within the gap . that is supposed to be?
It’s possible you may see the gasket slightly. Confession: I did not use a torque wrench to tighten mine. I did it just by feel, but be careful not to do it too tight or you could break a bolt or thread (which I’ve done before 😬)
I’m seeing the gasket on mine too. I only did the front cover so far. Seems like a huge gap but I torqued to spec. Any leaks? Doing rear valve cover tomorrow and hope I didn’t screw up
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this and help others out. My abs light came on and I tried several different scan tools, including one I was told cost more than my car. The paper clip gave me the only accurate diagnosis. Two wheels sensors later the ABS light turned right off and I'm back in business with the ABS working perfect once again. Thank you again and God Bless.
My speedometer sits at 0 but odometer stays at 147k and I get the erratic shifting. CEL code P0500. Do you think its the speed sensor on the bell housing or the blue resonator in the cluster?
I have the exact problem...97 Lexus ES300😢 but I can't find a ceramic resonator for it...help please...display the link ...🙏 ( I already replaced both speed sensors) major tune up 😂 and nothing & Reset the speedometer / cluster
This is the gift that keeps on giving. Very similar presentation 1998 Toyota Sienna with 244K miles. When hot day (we are in Texas) there is no odometer display or speedometer operation. On cool mornings it works fine and is a happy camper. This has been so frustrating. Your technique for soldering is novel but very acceptable. This video was very well done and your documentation is extremely solid. I will report back success / failure after part(s) arrive and procedure completed. Again, thank you so much for the very excellent video.
I put the same part Digi Key 490-18260-ND into my 99 Avalon and it cooked the speedometer board. After carefully soldering the part to speedometer, I immediately smelled electrical issue when on turning on the ignition. I removed the speedometer to see the board had a burn on it. Doing a continuity test on my newly soldered connection posts (3) there was no problem between them, no short. This is a similar "replacement part" to the original part suggested in another video that is no longer available PN # x902-ND - maybe the problem? I've bought a used cluster to install. Best to ya's, God Bless...
Tried this today on my 97 Lexus es300. And my car is still not allowing the speedometer to work. I'm guessing the next step is purchase an entirely different cluster panel.🤦♀️
@@jeffharrell1874 haha, I don't know much about doing videos, I just know how to vol adjust in my Filmora lol . I see you have two more vids related, to the Rx300, I wish you had 30, great job on this video. I just bought a 2001, not too many issues right now, just trying to learn my way around it , so I'll be able to handle future issues. I had to take off my rear wiper, as I'm in the middle of the rear window replacement, it is a substantial project.
00:09 Recommended wiper-arm removal? I had to use a mechanical puller, not sure if twisting the motor around like that is ok and why that even helped in the removal..shrugs.. Is this in 'a' manual, or it just worked for you?
No manual was used for this process. Turning it allowed me to position it in a way to relieve the tension so that it could be pulled off easily. Motor was not harmed.
@@jeffharrell1874 Thanks Jeff. Im actually wanting to do this for a 1998 V6 camry but the part number is different to the one you provide and no longer available. Your part is the same except its 47pF and the original 30pF. I was wondering if your part would work as a substitute. Any ideas?
This one is the easier of the 2 3.0L models of 99-03. I have the harder one that's in the Avalons ( 06/2000 manufacture date ). A youtuber ( can't remember what channel ) did a genius workaround by replacing the bolt with a stud of equal thread type and applying lock-tight so it would not come out easily, then poking the stud through the hole of that " bracket " thing and using a nut to tighten it down. This makes it so instead of fighting a bolt every turn with a wrench, you just have to break the nut loose with a single turn and hand loosen it the rest of the way. Also you're not fighting to reinstall it.
Hi Jeff. Just wondering if the resonator needs to go in one orientation or does it not matter? I have a 98 Camry that has rare intermittent issues with the Speedo dropping to zero when driving. Car still goes OK while moving but OD OFF light comes on and sometimes there are auto shift issues up changing from a stop start. I’ll try your repair recommendation. Thanks for posting. Kind regards. Craig
Thanks Jeff. I replaced the speed sensor to fix a transmission fault breakdown a few years ago. The 98 Camry 2.2L has been mostly OK since then except for the occasional speedo zeroing while driving, check engine light ON, OD OFF light ON and sometimes not changing up from first to second gear. The error seems to resolve itself after about 15-60 seconds but I’m concerned about unresponsiveness especially in traffic. So it’s potentially a safety concern I think. I was thinking the issue could be a faulty/sticky 1-2 shift solenoid but it changes sometimes even when I get the speedo fault. I’ve ordered the ceramic resonator and will replace once received and let you know. You’ve posted such helpful advice. Thanks again! Craig
Forgot to mention, I checked and found no error codes today even after the speedo zero fault occurred last night. The check engine light comes ON during the fault but then goes OFF presumably when the fault resolves itself.
Just finished replacing the ceramic resonator with a new one. Test drive was fine. Smooth shifting. Will monitor over next few months and let you know how it goes. I suspect this should eliminate the intermittent random speedo drop out noticed every now and then from my 98 Camry 4 cylinder.
Hi Jeff. FYI. Been a year after changing the cluster resonator in my 98 Camry but unfortunately, I still have the same issue. I think the issue is getting more frequent and it seems to occur in moist/rainy weather. I’ve ordered an aftermarket speed sensor and will see if that solves the intermittent issue. Failing that, ECU or wiring will investigated. Regards, Craig
Great video. Would this be the same for a 98 Sienna you think? Sure hope so just got the doggone ABS light this morning. Where did you come by that procedure? Just curious... :)
I believe it should work for that sienna, though the location of the DLC connector may be in a different spot around the engine. I found this procedure in a Haynes repair manual as well as other online videos. But the other videos were not all that clear, so I thought putting this video out may help many others going through the same issue.
