12:30 i really like the point you make here because sometimes it genuinely seems like he sabotages himself. like he will have the hardest line ever IN THE LAST 40 SECONDS OF THE SONG. and then the choruses will be bootycheeks.
With all due respect, you lost me when you ranked Cuomoville and TYnGN that low. IMO those two songs are one of weezer’s best B2B songs, if not the best. TYnGN, especially, is a modern weezer sound and IMO rock and roll masterpiece! I am 30 yrs too late for the weezer party so I guess I am not “trapped” in the nostalgia of their two amazing first two albums and I am not looking for the sound of those albums in this modern day weezer. I personally would want them to perform TYnGN back to back with TGMTEL when they got inducted in the HoF. Rendering a sick version of those two songs at the HoF will be a mic drop and a middle finger moment for not making weezer a first ballot HoFer. Nice effort tho to give a weezer content albeit somehow lacking perspective.
I understand some Pinkerton songs being too weird when being looked at individually, but when you look at it as a journey it's seriously not so bad. First three songs establishes his experiences with relationships so far, Why Bother shows the fear of trying again that comes from those experiences, and Across The Sea is the fall into depravity to cope with that. All of this is quickly mended with The Good Life where Rivers decides to get his shit together, so he gives dating a try again in El Scorcho, fails embarassingly in Pink Triangle, finds someone in Falling For You, and fucks up miserably in Butterfly leaving him in shambles. Across The Sea is gross yeah but it's kind of a non-issue when it's supposed to be the "when you hit rock bottom you can only go up" lesson in the album when it transitions into The Good Life.
I bet it was daunting to create maybe your best album at the beginning when your so young and so new to fame. Probably why he went back to school right after. Rivers, lots of adversity when he was a kid (communes were often abusive to little kids, and being bullied later). He's pretty amazing that he got through, first his childhood, then, the music world (too many drugs and exploiters),fame, tons of criticism. And they kept the band together. Pretty, pretty amazing even. He's a true artist.
Hey, like your review. Am just getting into Weezer and really enjoying finally discovering them. I'm in my 60s and when I was younger,( oh no, here she goes) if an album had 2 good songs you were supposed to be happy. So if there are 4 good tracks, I want to hear it. You can't always hit a homerun
one thing i noticed with all these records is that most of the songs have a theme they follow according to their season, ie. summer anger, autumn sad, but theres always one or two pop songs that feel out of place cause theyre meant to be singles. Tbh though pretty shit tier list altogether.
Deadly serious lol I just saw them in concert a few months ago, and the song was a lot of fun live, but still isn’t great imo F tier was probably too harsh, but it was one of my least favorite songs in the SZNZ series. So only in the SZNZ context, I think it’s placed decently. In the context of all of Weezer, it’s probably in D for me
Pretty much all the interesting decisions Rivers and the band made in the SZNS Album can be explained by the fact that they had a specific, unique vibe they were going for in each, almost as if they are playing a character, so you cannot expect the same throughout...that wouldn't be what they are trying to do with Seasons. For instance, you might say they could turn "The Sound of Drums" into a more hard metal/ classic version with lots of screaming guitars and harder lyrics and it would be "better." But that would defeat the point. Much of the album (some songs in particular, i.e. Lawn Chair) are intentionally dramatic/ silly, overdramatic, in other words, theatrical, to the point that Weezer had actually planned on playing them on Broadway. If you listen with this understanding, it becomes much more enjoyable. (Also if you listen to each EP at the correct time of the year).
Honestly super great points! I was just not really that big of a fan of the vines for Spring and Summer, personally. Maybe I should give them all a second shot ✌️&❤️
Tbh, I liked the addition of the saxophone in Should She Stay or Should She Go. They did a dance rock vibe for most of the songs in Autumn, which is fine, but when I think of Fall I definitely think of Jazz. Plus I like saxophones, so I do agree they could have played it throughout and it probably would have been better.
40:22 You forgot how good, again, those lyrics at the end are: "I look into the glass, and see my wasting skin, and pray would God it came to pass my heart had shrunk as thin. For then I undistressed, by hearts grown cold to me, could long await my lonely rest with equanimity." Best for last.
For the most part, I agree, besides the wildly inappropriate placement of Tastes like pain. Definitely switch that with Cant dance dont ask me and it will be a lot more sensical.
Dudeeeee John my beloved is so fking good. Sufjan has a lot of other amazing tracks on other albums like that one!! Check out “to be alone with you” it’s one of my favorites
S: Blue, Pinkerton A: White, Autumn, OK Human B: Make Belive, EWBAITE, Summer C: Hurley (Low B), Red, Green,Van Weezer, Winter, Maladroit, Pacific Daydream, D: Black, Spring, Raditude (Low C because put me back together) F: Teal
I started out hating Black but then it grew on me when I realized it is their only rocking album that doesn't have any typical chugging rock songs on it. That makes it more fun to listen to than the samey albums (Green, PD, OKH.) Also, I love Raditude, and Can't Stop Partying is a brilliant experiment to see if minor chords can change the vibe of club lyrics.
Hi, I noticed you put Make Believe in a lower tier even though it has Haunt You Every Day. Have you really given it a good listen? It's a real underappreciated gem and should be taken more seriously in the Weezer canon. I am definitely not being threatened to make this comment because of how my tier list went.
hi Steve, maybe I should go back and listen to the all time classic Weezer track "Haunt You Every Day," maybe it would convince me to rate Make Believe higher lol But in all seriousness, its super cool that you ranked all of Weezer's discography (barring some singles and SZNZs tracks). Collab soon? <3
I feel like every Weezer fan has a strong like/ dislike for various albums from their entire discography. However, that is the beauty behind what makes this band’s success and longevity. Personally, I completely disagree with, but respect your opinion.
Nice ranking overall, even if we have a lot of different opinions on songs. Can’t Dance, Don’t Ask Me has crept up to my top 10 Weezer songs, I love it. Great video!
