i adore this, but am bemused by everyone interpreting it and applying it to real life issues. it reminds me of when folks did that with spirited away. personally i think it's its own story, not an allegory.
I think the Greatest Living Show is an allegory for human trafficking and fake/abusive relationships showcasing the dangers that come with it. The Greatest Living Show on the surface acts as a surreal show but in reality is a circus of horrors that is hungry for victims, their suffering being amusement to the ringmaster's sadism as they will never tell the tale. The girl's romantic relationship with the Ringmaster is simply an illusion existing through seduction and deception by making her feel beautiful and loved, not realizing she fell into his web. Her fate is brutal, she becomes a puppet stripped of agency and femininity, the strings tear her apart as the puppeteer dances with her beheaded body. Like many before her only the demon will have his happily ever after and she won't be the last to sustain his living show.
am i tripping or is this song also about being stuck in a relationship with a man that treats you as nothing more than a girlfriend or a wife, rather than a person.. she talks about him saying only yes or no, he wont dance with her because of his own insecurities, she has to do all the work in the relationship to get him to talk to her at all, and its a cycle of toxicity because she feels so "enthralled" every time he acknowledges her despite how he treats her.. this broke my heart
I first found this channel through Skies Forever Blue and THE GREATEST LIVING SHOW, which have became my favorite songs. I don't really like trying out new artists and songs, so I was hesitant to check the other stuff out... but I am so glad I did check it out, because I found this! This is easily the best variation of Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit I have ever heard! I've been obsessed with Kirby stuff for a while now, so this is really feeding that obsession. /pos
i love this every lyrics are soooooo well written when you understand them istg i'm gonna cry 2 years after the first time I listened to this masterpiece
Hey why is there a trash can in the credits? Is it where they threw all the junk from the performance before moving on to kill more people? And why the toilet paper? Did someone try to stand up to the system by TP'ing the circus tent or???
I’m I going crazy?! ‘somewhere during 4:01 I can hear a masculine voice singing along with the girl! I might represent how he’s like, controlling her of somthing? Just a thing I noticed.

0:22 The main melody here, played by the flute, reminds me an melody/motif present in "Septette for the Dead Princess", from "Touhou 6 - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" except that the melody is much more slower here By the way, the fact that Toby Fox was present behind the composition of this song, makes this detail more fun
Theory: this song is actually about Toby Fox being sick of people asking him when Deltarune is coming out! (this is totally a joke - but I'm sure most people won't get it, so the joke is that this song is, in its most literal sense, about someone who goes to participate in a great work of art and then is destroyed by it because the system demands so much of them it literally rips them apart, and in addition to the story about abusive relationships it's probably intended to tell because that is a very popular topic to discuss nowadays, this could be taken as a metaphor for how artists/famous people are used by the people who are basically in charge of them, like Britney Spears being forced to perform when she didn't want to like at the 2007 VMAs when she had just had two babies or female singers being sexually abused and groomed by powerful figures in the music industry, and used by the system more broadly, like how the public judges celebrities incredibly harshly and demands every detail of their lives and demands more content from them... and Toby Fox wrote the original lyrics and I'm most familiar with his stuff, hence the silly example of this very dramatic and serious song actually annoying Undertale fans!)
In the spirit of fandom brainrot, Sunny & Mari could have easily played this violin-piano duet instead (although it's not a waltz) and it would have encompassed what they were both feeling about the pressure to be perfect and what ended up happening to them both because of it - or maybe, in an alternate universe, this could have played when Sunny finds the truth or something!
