I don't know anything about the Mekong river but find it confusing that there are many boats that seem to be dredging downriver and relocating it upriver but there are also many empty boats that look the same going upriver as well. I am wondering if there are government contracts to do that or why wouldn't it follow a pattern?

This filthy, stinking river is where Basa fish are farmed and then sold to the US, UK and European markets, often, as in the case of Young's Seafood, marketed as "Gastro" fish. I imagine that is short for Gastroenteritis. Seriously, watch the documentaries available on fish farming in the Mekong Delta and you will never again eat one of these fish.
